They say appearances can be deceiving. I think about that a lot. How things look to the outside world vs how they really are. How you can sometime, if you look really closely, see the cracks, or the mold, or the chipping paint. But you have to be looking. You have to have a reason to look closer. At a passing glance, everything always looks fine. He always seemed so happy they said.

Water Tank, Fukushima Daiichi, 2017
Like most nuclear power plants Fukushima Daiichi uses water to keep the radioactive rods cool. After the earthquake in March 2011 radioactive water began leaking into the Pacific Ocean. Over the following years a number of different plans were developed and implemented in attempt to stop this leakage, including storing the radioactive water in giant tanks on the property. Eventually there was no more space for water tanks, and as of 2021 the current plan is to slowly release the water into the Pacific Ocean over the next 30 years.

Standing in front of this tank, where I took this photo, the radiation level was 5887 cpm, for comparison the radiation level in a normal uncontaminated environment is closer to 30 cpm.

My brother was a mechanic. He fixed stuff. He’d go looking for broken and discarded things, take them apart, and build something new from their parts. He found a way to find beauty in the wreckage. From a distance, I thought he did that with his own life as well. I thought he was building something new from the wreckage. What he left behind told a different story. He had firmly embraced the wreckage and abandoned hope of ever rebuilding.

I spent a lovely afternoon with writing its story. Would you like to read about its memory before it is forgotten?

“I’m wet. I’m cold. My bruises hurt. My scrapes burn. As I get closer to the beach, I feel the waves building up. The swell hits the seabed, the waves get higher. They break. Not good! The waves begin to lift me and, shortly, I begin to break. I approach the beach with dizzying speed. It’s a steep beach, it must be low tide. They try to slow me down and the wave makes a hissing sound like it’s laughing at me. In fact, I feel like I’d take off and fly if it were a little faster. And I think I feel what surfers experience by running through the waves at incredible speed. I think I won’t survive the impact. But right now I had no options. The impact is brutal. When I hit the beach I stop suddenly. That hurts. They pull me trying to get me out of the waves. But the next wave fills me with at least a quarter of a ton of water and they leave me there. I’m no longer useful. I am left defeated, lonely, abandoned.”

Finally “Peace of Mind” has been minted on @withfoundation “I had a dream last night that I saw the ocean for the first time. It was early in the morning, just before sunrise. I was by myself, walking down the long stretch of beach that placed me directly in between the vast ocean and the tall cliffs- similar to the ones in this picture. The sand felt soft and almost silk-like between my toes. The ocean was blue & clear and strikingly beautiful.
