Eurasian Collared Dove

Just wanted to post something from the new camera setup. The ECD’s are goofy and sort of bratty to other species. But they are totally lovey-dovey with their own kind.

We are expecting a SNOW storm Friday night - not so much for Fort Collins, but the Denver area is expected to get a significant amount. Of course, I just put out the tomatoes and bell peppers. They will need to be covered for the storm and the few days after while temperatures are at or below freezing, but they should come through just fine.

Finch Family at the Hopper feeder - yeah, that’s right. Babies are here. It’s been very mild the last month or so.

Common Grackle - They’re Baaaack. Harbingers of spring, the first one this year showed up March 26th, about the time they have arrived the past five years, looking sleek, iridescent, and ready for the mating game. There was one for 3 days, and then by yesterday a family had gathered. We expect hundreds to arrive by April. A lot of folks don’t care for these guys, but I love their goofiness.

Male Northern Flicker - Red Shafted. Showing the beautiful patterns on the feathers

Male Northern Flicker - RedShafted. This one is shy with people, but he is a force when a squirrel tries to move in too close.

American Bushtit bird

Happy New Year from the tiny bushtits. First photo showing how their tails make up half of their entire length! They visit in flocks and twitter amongst themselves. Always a happy time when they stop by.

Coopers Hawk - pretty sure this is a female as she is on the large end of the size range. She has been in our ash tree for over an hour. I thought she might be napping, but she just zoomed over to where she spied a mouse, that escaped.

The Eurasian Collared Dove is an invasive species to the US. I first noticed them in Lakewood, CO about 8 years ago. We moved to Fort Collins in 2016, and the ECDs were here, too. These are here year round, but there are periods where I don’t see them, presumably when they are raising young. We had a pair build a nest that was predated a couple of years ago, and they have not tried here again.
