Goldfinches at the feeders during this latest Wyoming snowstorm

ryobioutdoors:

Winter is hard for our feathered friends! The cold weather and snow make finding seeds and food difficult. Help feed birds all winter long with this easy DIY bird feeder.

  1. Mix 1 cup of peanut butter in a sauce pan over low heat.
  2. Stir in 2 cups of cornmeal and 2 cups of oats to your melted peanut butter.
  3. Once the mixture has cooled slightly, form palm sized balls.
  4. Let the balls chill until hard.
  5. Place the peanut butter balls in a mesh bag.
  6. Hang and enjoy watching your feathered visitors!

February is the United States’ National Bird Feeding month (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Bird-Feeding_Month)!

February is a great time to be feeding birds, and encouraging them into your garden. Spring is on the way, and many birds will be looking for nesting areas and starting to come out of hiding from the winter.

So - put some bird seed out! How many different birds do you see in your garden?

Don’t forget - when hanging your bird feeder in the garden make sure cat’s can’t get to it…

A fluffeh puff upon their citrusy throne. Inspired by the little cuties that stopped by the orange peel feeders we made this holiday. ♡ Perfect timing for the snow storm which can make it extremely difficult for our overwintering friends to find food! Did you know that Robins help plant seeds by pooping them all over the place? So next time you see a plant or pretty flower this spring, you can think: “Hey, I bet a bird pooped that.” Yaaaay~~~

Eurasian Collared Dove

Just wanted to post something from the new camera setup. The ECD’s are goofy and sort of bratty to other species. But they are totally lovey-dovey with their own kind.

We are expecting a SNOW storm Friday night - not so much for Fort Collins, but the Denver area is expected to get a significant amount. Of course, I just put out the tomatoes and bell peppers. They will need to be covered for the storm and the few days after while temperatures are at or below freezing, but they should come through just fine.

Finch Family at the Hopper feeder - yeah, that’s right. Babies are here. It’s been very mild the last month or so.

Common Grackle - They’re Baaaack. Harbingers of spring, the first one this year showed up March 26th, about the time they have arrived the past five years, looking sleek, iridescent, and ready for the mating game. There was one for 3 days, and then by yesterday a family had gathered. We expect hundreds to arrive by April. A lot of folks don’t care for these guys, but I love their goofiness.

Male Northern Flicker - Red Shafted. Showing the beautiful patterns on the feathers

Male Northern Flicker - RedShafted. This one is shy with people, but he is a force when a squirrel tries to move in too close.

American Bushtit bird

Happy New Year from the tiny bushtits. First photo showing how their tails make up half of their entire length! They visit in flocks and twitter amongst themselves. Always a happy time when they stop by.

Flicker (by: Garden of Eve)

This beautiful flicker came to visit my finch feeder. I’ve never seen them at the feeders before. Such a pretty treat.
