Time for another baby bird. Here is a pygmy nuthatch (Sitta pygmaea) fledgling. If this little guy isn’t cute enough on it’s own, you should also know that these birds huddle in cavities together when it gets cold. These piles (roosts technically) of fluff-balls can reach over 150 individual nuthatches all stacked together. (Just thinking about it gives me adorable-goose-bumps.) They not only help keep each other warm, but they are also cooperative breeders, meaning they live in family groups while breeding, with grown offspring helping to feed the new offspring.
These birds are truly “pygmy” weighing only 9-11 grams (not even half an ounce!).

I found an old brush pen that @vantid gave me last Monday and it seemed like a sign that I should try my first Inktober. I had never used the brushpen (nor, indeed, done inktober) before, out of fear (fear of ruining art supplies, fear of sharing). Well, the bush pen was given to me 10 years ago, and the ages have made the brushpen kinda cranky and crusty and it’s much different than the precise micron-type ink pens I’m used to, so it’s been a good way to make myself experiment a bit.

Graduation birds
My sister completed her Master’s degree last week. As a gift to her supervisors, she asked me to paint some birds. These are all species she’s seen in the forest nearby, where she spent a few months writing her thesis. They are the Eurasian nuthatch, Firecrest, Great spotted woodpecker, and Common redstart. The Firecrest especially was a special happenstance.They are not massively common, and being so small you rarely see them. But my sister got a good look at one when a juvenile hit the window. It took a few minutes of rest in a dark box to recuperate, before it luckily flew off.

After only 6 days of being with us here at the centre, this young nuthatch already looks remarkably different and will soon be moved into
an aviary with some of our other garden birds.
Young birds grow so quickly and nuthatches can fly the nest after just 22 days!

This young bird is, in fact, a nestling nuthatch, and it was brought into the centre after falling out of a tree.
Unfortunately not escaping the fall unscathed, a veterinary examination found a small scratch to the left ventral neck and bruising to the rest of the body. After being given sub-cutaneous fluids, it was moved into an incubator and sent away with one of our vet team to receive the care it needs. It should return to the wild once fully grown.
