Grand Central Terminal is a destination, not a pit stop. It’s a train station the way St. Patrick’s Cathedral is a church or Central Park is a park—its appeal goes way beyond its stated purpose. Named after Giovanni da Verrazano, who, in 1524, was the first European explorer to sail into New York Harbor, the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge was the world’s longest suspension span when it opened in 1964. The bridge connects the boroughs of Brooklyn and Staten Island and provides the shortest route between the Middle Atlantic States and Long Island. [Photo: Julienne Schaer for NYCgo.com]
Many people come to New York hoping to make it to the top, and the fastest way there is the elevator—to the 67th, 69th, or 70th floors at 30 Rockefeller Plaza. The three 360-degree-view observation decks at Top of the Rock showcase the City’s spectacular skyline. [Photo: Brittany Petronella for NYCgo.com]
This cozy waterside park packs a lot into its small square footage: there’s an open lawn for relaxing, multiple playgrounds filled with swings and jungle gyms for kids, a spray shower for summer fun and a steel pier that takes visitors straight out into the East River, where they can catch spectacular views of Manhattan skyline. West 4th Street’s iconic basketball court—colloquially called “the cage” because a 20-foot chain-link fence boxes players into a smaller-than-regulation playing surface—has been a proving ground for such NBA stars as Stephon Marbury and Anthony Mason. It’s been immortalized in film, print and video games. The tight quarters and talented teams make for fast-paced, ferocious competition in the court’s annual league, which explains why the crowd seldom fits within the court’s confines—surrounding sidewalks are constantly filled with fans eagerly awaiting the next alley-oop dunk or resounding rejection. The playground also features popular public handball courts. [Photo: Molly Flores for NYCgo.com]
