May 3rd, Happy Birthday Oxnard!

Oxnard is one of the main Ham-Hams, and on top of that, he has a huge role during the whole series. He is a domestic hamster that lives with his owner, Kana, which is Laura’s friend from school and neighbor. That allows him and Hamtaro to become really close friends, and actually it’s the first Ham-Ham that we meet apart of Hamtaro himself.

Oxnard is a big hamster, both in height and width, and he sports a funny design. His fur is white, but he has a lot of grey spots all over his body. In other languages, like Spanish, this gives him his name, “Manchitas”, which means “Little spots”.

Oxnard likes to eat more than anything on his life. Well, besides Kana and Pepper, of course. His appetite is the biggest of all the Ham-Hams, and he has eaten really strange things (like that one time he ate an ice cube encasing Harmony’s magical wand because it was surrounded by Lazuli’s magical cloud). He also owns a very special sunflower seed that he refuses to eat no matter what, and he gets really sad whenever he loses it… although most times it just happens to be nearby and he just misplaces it.

Oxnard personality grows with the series. He is always really polite, one of the most polite Ham-Hams if not the most polite one, always refering to all boys as -san, even though they’re friends. But he is also very shy and a coward. He can be brave sometimes, and he gets braver in later seasons, but he still has that cowardly attitude towards life.

His Japanese name is Koushi, which literally means “calf”. Apparently for the Japanese folks, the fact that he is big and white with grey spots means he is a cow. This works with his English name OXnard.

Relationships

Oxnard has one clear love interest, and that is Pepper. This interest is nourished through the whole series, leading to the big finale in which they marry on the last episode. Prior to that, Oxnard moved to Dylan’s farm to live there with Pepper. But their love have had a few ups and downs.

The first time we were introduced to Pepper, Oxnard was her “friend” and he wanted to confess, but he needed the help of the Hamtaro for that. Luckily, Pepper felt the same way towards Oxnard.

This couple features a common factor in many of Hamtaro’s couples, that is, each part of the relation is a polar opposite. While Oxnard is big and coward, Pepper is small and brave. While Oxnard is polite and chill, Pepper is tomboyish and can’t sit still. They both cover each other’s flaws and nurture their strengths, making them a great couple that have a good chemistry when sharing an episode.

Episode 37 - Oxnard’s Big Crush

This is the first episode in which we are introduced to Pepper. Hamtaro and Oxnard visit Pepper’s ranch and Oxnard requests Hamtaro help to confess his feelings.

Episode 110 - Stepping Ham-Hams

Oxnard wants to impress Pepper during the Ondo Festival, and for that he asks Sabu to teach him to play the drums.

Episode 119 – Oxnard’s Pure Heart

Oxnard is excited because Pepper is coming, but she’s sick! He decides to go all the way to the Flower Ranch to meet her and take care of her. Will he succeed?

Episode 179 – Run, Pepper!

Once more, Pepper is going to visit, but Dylan’s car broke down. Oxnard takes off to save his love, with the help of Hamtaro and Boss.

Episode 203 – A Mischievous Unicorn!

A new critter appears in Sweets Paradise. A unicorn that appears to do mischievous things, but the Ham-Hams think Oxnard is to blame. Will he be able to clear his name?

Episode 285 – Oxnard and Pepper

Oxnard visits Pepper at the Flower Ranch, and is decided to confess once and for all. By the end of the episode, he surprises everyone when he decides to stay with Pepper at the ranch instead of going back home with Kana.

Episode 296 – Happy Ham-Ham Wedding

Oxnard visits again, together with Pepper, to announce that they are to be wed! The Ham-Hams then start preparations for the big event, and invite everyone over.

We are sure Oxnard will have a really big cake ready for him today, we just hope he leaves some for the rest of Ham-Hams!
