Top right: a single unused image of Goombella found in the game’s files. The only major difference from Goombella’s actual sprite is that this one has visible yellow soles on her shoes.
Bottom: the Goombella trophy from Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. For an unknown reason, this trophy was based on the unused image, which has been redrawn in higher resolution, despite the finished game and all official artwork of Goombella not having the soles as part of the design.

Left: in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Vivian is almost always seen smiling during regular gameplay on the overworld, such as during the animation of pulling Mario into the shadows.
Right: however, when releasing Mario from the shadows at the end of the overworld ability animation, for a few frames, Vivian is seen frowning before going back to smiling. Due to both characters being deformed by the emerging animation during this, it is very difficult to notice during gameplay. This may imply that Vivian is briefly sad about having to let go of Mario.
Top: in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Bobbery’s deceased wife Scarlette is mentioned and a letter from her is read aloud, but it is not shown what she looked like.
Bottom: in the Super Mario-kun manga issue based on the game, Scarlette is shown in an old photo. As this manga is officially licensed, this is the only official depiction of her while she was alive. Note that Bob-ombs in that manga series have arms as a stylization choice (and possibly as a reference to their first appearance in Doki Doki Panic/Super Mario Bros. 2, where they had arms); it is likely that if she were drawn in the game’s original style, she would not have arms.

I’m not particularly proud of this year’s summary. I didn’t push myself and stayed in my comfort zone a lot. But I have some goals for 2021 and hopefully this’ll be a great year for growth!
