Today the lady behind me in line at the grocery store checkout politely tapped my shoulder and when I turned around she motioned toward my giant bundles of kale and asked: “what do you do with your kale? Do you cook with it, or make juice, or…?” And i admitted there in front of god and the world “oh I feed it to my peacocks.” And she just looked so taken aback that I said “I’m sorry that’s not the answer you were hoping for”

And that’s how I learned other people don’t really know what to do with kale either. We’re all pretty sure it’s edible, though.

People are sending me kale recipes like they honestly believe I will try to eat bird food

I’m sorry I’m hung up on the part where op owns peacocks

Purple ones:

And peahens. This one sleeps on a fluffy rainbow unicorn stuffed animal:

Her name is Artemis and she’s allergic to food.

This is Stan. His color morph is called Cameo so I named him Stan Lee:

He’s Artemis’ boyfriend.

They both love kale. I suppose someone’s got to.

OP Tell them I love them!

Are they good guard birds?

That depends on your definition of ‘guard.’

They won’t defend other birds from predators like raccoons or weasels or coyotes or anything. They’re just as likely to get eaten in those cases.

However, they will harass snakes and other small, novel animals like mice, rabbits, wild birds, etc if they can get away with it. They will also yell at anything they disapprove of including but not limited to:

  • Your car
  • Neighbors
  • that one leaf that moved in the wind
  • the wind
  • deer in the woods
  • a hawk overhead
  • an airplane that might be a hawk overhead
  • each other
  • a noise they heard
  • a noise they thought they heard
  • sparrows
  • seriously, fuck sparrows specifically, they are DISALLOWED, completely intolerable, must chase off, shake train, and/or yell about it
  • that one kiwi fruit that was up to no good
  • the feather that fell off their own body and scared them
  • thunder (how dare the sky yell at them)
  • the sun arriving
  • the sun departing
  • sometimes predators I guess

How come Americans are allowed to own anything and everything?

The real question is, what mortal can stop me

It’s so difficult to find a good photo of a charcoal peacock, but here’s a charcoal blackshoulder someone posted to one of my groups. Usually their wings are grey and it’s hard to tell that the bird isn’t also grey instead of black (most photos are overexposed in order to see detail), but in person, they are a black based bird.

Charcoal peafowl are a mutation that shouldn’t be bred forward; their lifespans are often half what a normal peafowl’s is, and the hens are all sterile. It survives and continues to be bred because people like melanistic birds. Charcoal is propagated via breeding the males to hens that are heterozygous for the mutation, which for many breeders often means breeding a male to a wild type hen, and then breeding the het charcoal hen offspring back to their father.

@vincedakota asked if there were any more ethical dark morphs, and there are a couple!

Buford bronze, sonja’s violeta, and midnight morphs are all good, dark ones.

Here’s a buford bronze BS, though this is a little washed out

And a sonja’s violeta BS (sometimes people call these ones “violet” or “violete” instead of violeta but the person who original produced the morph named them Sonja’s Violeta after either his wife or daughter I forget which, and I choose to respect that nomenclature, especially since it makes it easier to tell someone’s talking about THIS morph instead of european violet). They actually shine purple in good light.

And a midnight BS

Interesting. Do people have any idea why full charcoal hens are sterile and the lifespans are short? It sounds like they’re pretty inbred but I’m surprised that one of the most basic colour mutations that crops up in animals is apparently linked to such extreme negative health effects.

Do people think it’s a specific downstream effect of the allele (the solid black colour is directly due to the breaking of some vital but not-immediately-lethal mechanism), or it happens to be linked to another deleterious mutation but could potentially be bred out by outcrossing to standard birds for a couple of generations (tbh probably a huge undertaking)? Do they show any like neurological problems? Is the lifespan just due to overall ill health?

I recently had a day out with my mum and nan at Southport, a seaside town in the North West. While there I, of course, had a browse in the shops and I may or may not have bought quite a few bits ready for my new year at University. Although I primarily bought items in Primark, there were a couple of bits from Debenhams, New Look and Peacockss as well.

Debenhams;

I bought a comfy maroon coloured cardigan-shawl thing which I figured would be so good to have while away at University when it starts to cool down for Autumn. It was a bargain at about £6.75 and like I said earlier, it is super comfy and I’m excited for the cooler months to start.

I also bought a pair of light pink velvet heels which are Dorothy Perkins and I dropped on with these as they were the only pair of these left and luckily enough they were in my size! They’re a perfect match for a dress I bought in New Look last year and I couldn’t say no to them, especially at the price of £10.

New Look;

I finally got my hands on a faux leather jacket in a gorgeous pale pink colour. I had my eye on this for a while and when I went into the store -originally looking for boots- I came across this in the sale rack. I’m excited to be able to wear this with so many different outfits I have already planned! Once again, another bargain as it cost me only £12, an enormous decrease from the original £40.

Primark;

I got my hands on a burgundy pinafore and it looks so cute, I’m excited to style it during the autumn months when it gets a bit colder and tights and boots return into season and it cost me just £12.

I finally bought some boots as well, after looking around for a few weeks I have been on the hunt for some boots ready for university and I managed to find two pairs! A pair of flat ankle boots and a pair of flat, over the knee boots, both in black. The ankle boots I believe where around £8-£10 I think (I can’t find the receipt!) and the over the knee boots cost me £18, an overall bargain.

Some other boring bits include me picking up a pair of plain black leggings because some how I have managed to lose my others and they cost me like £2.50, and I bought a pair of simple high waister skinny jeans in a dark blue for £9.

(Little updated addition) Peacocks;

On another little shopping trip I went into Peacocks and picked up two scarves and a winter beret style hat. If you’re on the look out for these kind of items for the upcoming months I’d definitely encourage you to try your nearest peacocks as each if these items cost 50p and you never know what bargains you might pick up!

That’s all from me, unfortunately I didn’t manage to get a photo of some items before they’ve been packed up ready for Uni but hopefully I’ll be able to show you some time in the near future!

XO K

A little clothing haul so far this month I recently had a day out with my mum and nan at Southport, a seaside town in the North West.

shoutout to those random peacocks you find in places that are probably unsuitable for a peacock to inhabit in the first place

what the fuck kinds of lives are you guys leading. i’ve never seen a peacock in my life. where are u guys finding them.

fun fact: for years we had two male peacocks living in our neighborhood in the middle of suburban delaware

no one knew where they came from they just showed up one day. we named them “sugar” and “booger” and i liked feeding them cereal even though they would poop all over our balcony

then after a couple years a new neighbor moved in and called the zoo, but when the animal catchers came the peacocks ran away faster than we’ve ever seen them run before

i hear one of them made it to another neighborhood and no one has seen the other one since. i like the to think sugar’s the one who made it to another neighborhood cuz he was always very clingy/always wanted to be around people
