This piece features a (currently still in progress) design of my character Nickel Obol, created by Atlas R&D as a ‘back-up Penny’. In this moment, she and Penny are saying goodbye in the cyberworld as she destroys her coding, taking the hack on Penny with her (Penny does not turn human in this au).
I genuinely believe that Jaune had no good choice to make in “The Final Word”. It was either save Penny and let Weiss die, or save Weiss and let Penny die. I’m pretty sure that Penny knew that too.
Weiss was fighting a Maiden-Grimm hybrid all on her own, and her only backup was Jaune (who was currently occupied with Penny) and Penny (who was currently a liability in more ways than one). If Jaune stayed with Penny to heal/protect her, Weiss would die. If Jaune backed up Weiss, Cinder would realize that Penny’s unguarded and make a beeline for her and finish the job.
“Couldn’t Jaune use his Aura Amp to save Penny?” They didn’t have any time. Healing someone from a fatal stab wound isn’t instantaneous, no matter how much you’ve trained your healing semblance. Cinder was literal moments away from killing Weiss when Jaune did what he had to do. If Jaune decided to not listen to Penny’s choice and try to heal her anyway, Weiss would be in the Void at best and literal dust at worst, not to mention the fact that now Jaune’s the only obstacle in Cinder’s way to the Winter Maiden, because you know there’s no way in hell he got much of Penny unstabbed enough for her to at least run away.
Penny knew that Weiss was in danger. Penny knew that Cinder was too dangerous to be able to have two of the Maidens. Penny also knew that Jaune was the only one around who could help.
In the end, both Penny and Jaune had no good choices to make.

Lets pretend for a moment that rwby listened to James plan, and decided not to tell the others.
His plan would still fail
He had already fallen For Cinders gambit, so either the powers would have gone to Penny, the literal “Protector of Mantle” who obviously was never gonna go with his plan or they would have gone to Cinder. And I don’t even wanna explain how much worse that would have been.
Out of all the things that could’ve happened today, this was not expected. Penny scanned the sidewalk she’d just run onto, trying to look between people’s feet. It had turned the corner just seconds before she did and already it felt like she lost it. Then she caught a flash of green. Immediately she perked up and chased back after it, apologizing as she wove between other pedestrians. As she ran, she saw a girl stumble when the cat ran between her feet and almost fall. The girl caught herself and looked back and forth like she was trying to prove to herself that that really happened.
“Quick, catch that cat!” Penny yelled out to her. Their eyes caught for the briefest moments. Just long enough for Penny to absently catalogue sea green eyes and freckles. “It stole my wallet!” The girl nodded and took off after the cat. Penny pushed herself further to reach them both.
By the time she caught up, the other girl had the cat in her arms and her wallet in hand. Penny took a few seconds to catch her breath and smiled.
“Here you go!” The girl held her wallet out to her.
“Thank you,” Penny said, gratefully taking her wallet back.
“Of course,” the girl said with a laugh in her voice. She readjusted the cat- who seemed perfectly happy, red eyes giving a slow blink- in her arms. “I’m not sure why a cat would want a wallet, though.”
Penny looked awkwardly away, fingering the raised part of the wallet. “I may keep treats in there, in case I run into any potential animal friends.”
“Oh, that’s smart! I should start doing that.” The girl chuckled. The cat purred, a deep, rumbling sound, as she scratched behind her ears rather absentmindedly. “If I remember… I’m not too good at remembering things. Ren always says I should write it down, but I always forget that too.”
Penny nodded understandingly. Her friend Russel wasn’t too good at remembering things, either. “I can give you some of mine.” She opened the wallet to shake some out. The cat looked over, interested.
“Thanks! I’m Nora,” the girl said.
“I’m Penny!” Penny said. “Salutations!” She stuck out the hand that had the treats in it and they both laughed when the cat stuck her nose in Penny’s palm.
