SPX Announces GoFundMe to Defend The 11 Bethesda, Maryland - September 14, 2018 Media Release

Last month, eleven members of the independent comics community and one publisher were served with a defamation lawsuit because of concerns they raised about a fellow creator’s alleged pattern of sexual misconduct.

Whit Taylor, Laura Knetzger, Josh O’Neill, Tom Kaczynski, Hazel Newlevant, Emma Louthan, Ben Passmore, Emi Gennis, Jordan Shiveley, Morgan Pielli and Rob Clough, as well as the indie comics publisher Uncivilized Books, all need our help to defend themselves against these charges!

SPX has established the Defend The 11 legal aid fund to help these members of our creative community in their time of need. SPX is organizing this fund in consultation with the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, which brings legal and fundraising experience to the effort.

Of this next step in SPX’s fundraising support for the defendants, SPX Executive Director Warren Bernard said, “The response from our creative community about this case has been overwhelming. Now is the time to turn that rightful outrage into action. Contributing to this fundraiser, or helping us share it widely are steps that anyone can take to defend the eleven and in doing so, defend the kind of community we want to be a part of.”

Bernard continued, “Cases of this nature can continue for years, and cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. When news of the lawsuit reached us, $20,000 was pledged to ensure these creators have immediate access to quality legal representation - but defending these charges of defamation is likely to be a long and expensive process. Most of that initial $20,000 SPX commitment from has already been spent to pay legal bills.”

SPXannounced its intent to establish a legal aid fund in a September 1, 2018 joint statement with the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund’s new President, Christina Merkler. SPX’s annual comic arts festival takes place this weekend in Bethesda, Maryland. In addition to the GoFundMe campaign, those wishing to donate to the #Defendthe11 legal aid fund can do so in-person at the festival.

Members of prison abolitionist organisation No Pride in Prisons will be joining the Tāmaki Housing Group today to resist the eviction state housing tenant of Ioela “Niki” Rauti.

Its spokesperson Emilie Rākete says, “No Pride in Prisons is proud to join our friends and whānau in protecting Niki’s right to a home. We will be joining dozens of others in occupying Niki’s land and refusing to move until she is guaranteed the right to stay in her home.”

Rauti was served with a 90-day eviction notice, which expired on the 18th of January. The police has warned that she will be physically moved on today from 9:30am. “We intend to put our bodies on the line to stop this eviction,” says Rākete.

No Pride in Prisons believes the eviction is unjust. “One of the most frustrating things about this whole process is that it never used to be like this. State housing tenants, including Niki, were told for decades that their houses were for life.”

“The government introduced reviewable tenancies just so it could kick out state housing tenants and make some money from their eviction.”

Rauti’s house is owned by the Tāmaki Regeneration Company (TRC), which was transferred ownership from Housing New Zealand as a part of the Tāmaki redevelopment. TRC wants to develop the land that her house sits on.

“While the government and the council say these evictions are necessary to keep house prices down, we’ve seen a huge increase in house prices in the area since the redevelopments began.”

“The government is effectively kicking out old and poor people and making room for the rich. Niki’s eviction is just one part of a broader plan to undermine state housing and transfer land to the wealthy,” says Rākete.

The organisation is worried about how the move might impact Niki’s health and well-being. “Niki is an elderly woman who has a heart condition. One of the saddest parts of the Tāmaki redevelopment has been the effect on the elderly. Often, following eviction from life-long homes, elderly tenants have passed away shortly after being relocated.”

No Pride in Prisons is also concerned about the police involvement in evicting Niki. According to Rākete, “The police will do everything it can to make sure that this blatantly unjust process continues. Niki is a respected kuia, but the police intend to remove her from her home by force.”

“We oppose both Niki’s eviction and the violence we expect to see from police in order to make it happen.”

“We believe that Niki and all other tenants deserve healthy, warm and affordable homes, and the stability of knowing they won’t be evicted every time the government wants to make a buck.”

“We support the Tāmaki Housing Group and all those resisting the sell-off of state houses and the eviction of state housing tenants. This injustice is part of a broader program by this and previous governments to undermine support for poor and working class people.”

No Pride in Prisons stands in solidarity with those fighting for safe and secure housing for all.”

“I began The Pride because I want to tell stories where queer characters and stories are not only told through metaphor, analogy and subtext, but are open, accessible and show a diversity of life not usually seen in the medium,” says writer Joe Glass.

“We’ve been big fans of The Pride since it debuted through comiXology Submit in 2014,” said Chip Mosher, comiXology’s Head of Content. “We are excited about the future of The Pride and so have taken steps to invest in it and have it continue as a comiXology Originals title. ComiXology Originals & Delcourt Group Celebrate the Impending Release of Promethee 13:13 by Andy

ComiXology Originals & Delcourt Group Celebrate the Impending Release of Promethee 13:13 by Andy Diggle, Shawn Martinbrough, David Stewart & Jock with an Exclusive Poster During the Festival International De La Bande Dessinée

Promethee 13:13 is an upcoming prequel to the critically acclaimed, post-apocalyptic sci-fi  bandes dessinées by Christophe Bec

Bec, Diggle, Martinbrough, & Jock to sign the exclusive Promethee 13:13 poster and speak during a panel at theFestival International De La Bande Dessinée

Volumes 1 & 2 to be simultaneously released in English and French same-day worldwide

January 23 2019 – Angouleme, France – ComiXology, Amazon’s premier digital comics service, and Delcourt Group, the leading independent comic book publisher in France, join forces to bring readers everywhere the upcoming comiXology Originals title Promethee 13:13, a prequel to Christophe Bec’s best-selling, mind-bending, science-fiction bande dessinée, Promethee. The Promethee 13:13 team along with original Promethee creator Christophe Bec will be in attendance at the 46th annual Festival International De La Bande Dessinée – happening January 24-27, 2019 in Angouleme, France – to promote and discuss new details about this upcoming title.

Coming this year as part of the comiXology Originals line of exclusive digital content, Promethee 13:13 will be exclusively available as two 48-page volumes on Kindle and comiXology and available to members of Prime Reading, Kindle Unlimited, and comiXology Unlimited at no additional cost. Each volume will be simultaneously released in English and French worldwide at debut.

To celebrate this announcement, the all-star Promethee 13:13 creative team of Andy Diggle, Shawn Martinbrough and Jock, along with Prometheeoriginal creator,Christophe Bec, will appear at the Delcourt Group booth in Le Monde des Bulles Marquee to sign an exclusive, limited edition poster illustrated by Shawn Martinbrough, with colors by Jock, Friday, January 25th from 5-6pm, and Saturday January 26th from 7-8pm. Additionally, the Promethee team along with comiXology Originals Head of Content, Chip Mosher and Directeur Editorial at Delcourt Group, Jean Wacquet, and Editor Will Dennis, will discuss this upcoming comic series during the Past, Present and Future: Promethee 13:13 panel, Thursday, January 24th at 4:30pm at the Conservatory Gabriel Fauré in Angoulême, France.

“The universe of Promethee is vast. It could be extended, as I am doing now, or enriched, as Andy Diggle wanted to do. He has adeptly filled gaps in my story, bringing his own vision and digging deeper into aspects of the tale that I only ever touched on, sometimes even with a certain poetry. Shawn Martinbrough’s artwork has character; his stark style brings a new feeling to the series, that will permit it, I hope, to help a much larger number of American readers discover my series,” said Promethee original creator/writer/artist Christophe Bec.

“ThePromethee series is this huge, sprawling epic that takes place over thousands of years with dozens of characters. There’s so much material and so many options, you’re spoiled for choice. I wanted to come up with something accessible and give a sense of the wealth of the material out there to be discovered, but without it feeling completely overwhelming—a nice self-contained story, which doesn’t require you to have any knowledge of the original series, but can act as a doorway to it,” said Promethee 13:13 writer, Andy Diggle.

Promethee 13:13 is a psychological sci-fi horror comic full of alien conspiracy, written by Andy Diggle (The Losers, Thief of Thieves, Hellblazer, Uncanny) with art by Shawn Martinbrough (Thief of Thieves, Batman: Detective Comics, The Black Panther, Hellboy), colors by Dave Stewart (Hellboy, DC: The New Frontier, The Umbrella Academy), covers by Jock (Batman, The Losers), and headed by veteran editor Will Dennis.

Darla, a successful author, has visions of apocalyptic invasions and being abducted by aliens as a child. After years of medication she’s put it behind her, until one day while speaking at a mental illness conference in San Diego, her life gets turned upside down. At the same time, strange things begin to happen during the latest space shuttle Atlantis mission. Promethee 13:13 tells the thrilling fast-paced space drama leading up to the moments of September 21, 2019 at 13:13.

In addition to being purchasable on comiXology and Amazon, comiXology Originals are also available to read through Prime Reading, Kindle Unlimited, and comiXology Unlimited.
