#reality show

LIVE

Netflix keeps on trying to get me to watch “Old Enough!”, a reality show of extremely young children (we’re talking 2-4 year olds here) being sent alone on errands for the first time (likely because I’ve watched other Japanese content and it doesn’t recognize the genre differences in foreign material). Not my kind of programming.

Anyway, sitting here contemplating the whole thing- if this were to occur here in the USA, several things would happen simultaneously:

If the child was even allowed to use mass transit or to walk into the stores (many stores and malls here ban all children under the age of 18 without a parent), the cashier would not sell to them, and likely delay them and call the police, who would turn them over to child protective services and the child would be put into foster care for parental neglect. That is, if the child gets to the store at all and wasn’t kidnapped by a violent pedophile along the way.

And we see this as normal behavior.

WTF is wrong with this country???

I Am Not Leaving You

I saw a pic of Mo’Nique following her in studio interview with HOT 97 and did a double take. Over the last three years, the Academy Award winning actress has lost an impressive 82 lbs through diet and exercise. Having shed 103lbs of my own using the same conventional methods, I understood the smile on Mo’Nique’s face, recognized the pride in her stance and the relief in her eyes. She was saving her own life.

I Instagram’d the picture and within minutes hundreds of you shared in my joy for her, reposting, tweeting and liking the flick. The general consensus was the comedienne had done good.

Then there were the few of you whom felt differently. The complaints ranged from, ‘she looked better fat’, ‘and now her head is too big ‘to’ now she won’t be funny anymore.’ But I think the most telling criticism – the most popular one – was ‘what happened to representing for the big girls?’

I bring this up for a reason…

Last night, episode 7 of The Gossip Game began with a scene between K Foxx and myself at ooVoo. I’d seen her interview with the beautiful Brittany Sky, the lead from Kendrick’s ‘Poetic Justice’ video and posed a question that unfortunately didn’t make it into the episode: Don’t you feel that ‘colorism’ in any form (light over dark or dark over light) is wrong?

It was that question that began the exchange that was aired. K Foxx felt passionately that the mass mistreatment of darker African-Americans (particularly women) warranted some recompense and was puzzled why I didn’t feel the same. She was sure I’d experienced some of the same color-biased disrespect that she’s encountered over the years.

But I haven’t. On my best days my skin is a glowy pecan, on the average day I’m more the color of a Popeye’s chicken breast. My skin sits between two shades of most foundations (this told to me repeatedly by accomplished make-up artists). I choose the darker so that even when I sweat, I won’t look ashy. I don’t consider myself dark skin or light skin. I’m fully aware that the color-bias does exist both ways, and it angers me but I’ve never experienced it first hand. I’ve always simply fallen in the middle. I’m brown. I’m never included in the discussion. And I’ve never really been told that I’m ‘dark skin’…Until K Foxx.

By this afternoon hundreds of viewers had made a point to tweet/Instagram/FB message me. The comments ranged from, ‘how could you be ashamed of your dark skin?’ to ‘girl you are not lightskin’ to my personal favorite, ‘You’re darkskin, if this were slavery you’d be in the field with the rest of us.’

Finally, I put it all together. Let’s go back to Mo’Nique.

The boisterous funny gal built a career off of being larger than life. She had entire routines based on the idea that ‘skinny bitches are evil’ and boldly declared that P.H.A.T. should be embraced because it meant ‘Pretty Hot And Tempting’. But this was 82lbs ago.

At my highest weight, I’d traveled to New York from LA and was out with my friend Jai, who had just lost over 70lbs of his own. I remember struggling to keep up as we roamed the village, I can still recall the contempt I felt when he ordered a grilled chicken breast and salad for lunch while I indulged in a burger and fries. Jai scared me. He represented what I couldn’t see for myself.

I understood the hate against Mo’Nique, a great deal of which came from those who appeared to be struggling with their own weight. Where her loss should’ve inspired, for some it shown a light on how far they themselves had to go to get there. They felt abandoned. Even though Mo’Nique had done what was (rightfully)best for her, she’d carried the torch proudly for so long that her fellow P.H.A.T. Girls felt she’d left them, alone and unrepresented.

As I sat still and made myself look through the profiles of many of you that took the time to let me know your thoughts on my complexion, the pattern I noticed was unmistakable. Very few of you were of a lighter skin tone. A great majority of those who contacted me boasted things like #TeamDarkSkin and ‘Chocolate Queen’ in your bios. And now I understand.

I appreciate the love I’ve received over the last two months from those happy for my inclusion on the show and proud that I’ve kept my focus and composure. I understand how my network and others have actively mishandled our image so I came into this show resolved that I would be true to who I am and represent my culture.

I am a Black woman. It’s one of my favorite things about myself. And no one or nothing could ever make me anything but proud of that.

Many of you felt that by me saying I wasn’t dark skin, I was somehow rejecting you. You thought I was leaving a team that I actually never even played for.

I refuse to help divide us. Light skin, dark skin or in between, we’re still being hunted every single day by poverty, educational bias, poor health habits, law enforcement and so many other things that I will be damned if I continue a discussion started by slave owners so they could place a dollar amount on our heads. Miss me with all of it. If you need me to identify with a particular skin tone in order to relate to me, then you were never going to relate to me anyway. We’re all Black. I understand the pain of color-bias and will gladly champion discussions on how to stop it. What I won’t do is allow anyone to push me into a corner and saddle me with his or her own hypersensitivity. This is not a game I’m going to play and I encourage you to stop playing it as well. What we give power to, will control us.

I am not #TeamDarkSkin, just as I am not #TeamLightSkin. I’m not even #TeamBrown. I’m #TEAMBLACK. And know that I am not now – nor am I ever – leaving you.

Annmarie on the show & the future of AMD

Introduction

Just weeks before the perennial end of the year bashes that ring in 2016, Annmarie Debrito can be found diligently at work, putting plans into place, writing, creating storyboards, interviewing candidates, prospecting, contacting sponsors, finalizing casting, etc. All the things needed to launch her first television production off the ground. From flights across the country, spontaneous road trips, presentations, meetings, contracts and budgets, it’s certainly not easy. But alas,  the adventure, the drive and the excitement for new beginnings bekon the AMD Entertainment CEO and her wonderful crew. I, Ollie Montgomery, sat down with Annmarie for an AMA session to find out how she’s coping.

———————————

OM: What’s happening and what’s going on?

Annmarie Debrito: As of now…

I have completed the storyboards for each finalist up to date. Next, each of the finalists will have their green room session where we will be taping. From the green room sessions, that’s how we pick our final cast. Once the cast is complete, we begin filming.

OM: Why did you pick who you picked?

Annmarie Debrito: Typically people hold casting calls in a busy setting and it’s a fast process where they rush through a screening and its loud, chaotic, busy. I didn’t want that. I wanted to personally prescreen each person first. Then, if interested, invite them to a very thorough, intense interview with myself and my casting team. Once this is done, my casting team and I sit and talk and invite the person to become a finalist. We look for personality and make sure their life storyline fits in with what I am looking for.

OM: Describe your craziest interview moment

Annmarie Debrito: I place ads everywhere about what I am looking for and one of the places I placed an ad was on Craigslist. I had a woman call me and she drove from Connecticut to Rhode Island, where we met at a busy hotel lobby in Providence. When the interview was over, she told me she was glad she didn’t have to kick me in the face. She said she and her sister were nervous about coming to meet with me and they had a plan about how to put me down if I was trying to harm them. I thought it was hilarious. But I do understand why they would have felt that way.

OM: When are you filming?

Annmarie Debrito: Filming starts next week for cast. Show filming begins in January.

OM: Where are you filming?

Annmarie Debrito:We are going to jump-start the first location and film in New York City. The majority of the filming will be done, throughout the New England area. We intend to showcase all the beautiful locations that N.E. has to offer the American people. We are currently reaching out to several businesses in NE for location agreements. We want so showcase your business. If you would like to have your business showcased in a scene on a major tv network, email us at [email protected]

OM: When do you expect the show to air?

Annmarie Debrito: After the season is filmed. I have no control on when it airs. That is done by the network.

OM: Who is your target demographic?

Annmarie Debrito: My target audience is everyone who enjoys watching someone living their truth and sharing with the world; this includes sharing their aspirations and showing their growth, mistakes, and their success. Allowing acceptance of these women’s personal wrongs and rights and courage while they are broadcast their lives on national tv and sharing it with millions and finding your connection in each of their story or seeing their struggles and believing in them as I did.

OM: What can we fans do in the meantime?

Annmarie Debrito: Stay connected through our social sites, make sure you sign up for our newsletters. if you would like to be a part of this major project, you can email us at [email protected] or sign up on our website at www.amdent.com

OM: What events do you have coming up?

Annmarie Debrito: Meet our FINAL Cast event! And be in the lookout for our SUMMER HUGE Premier Red Carpet Affair with all the mover and shakers in the industry. My vision is always BIG and this event is going to be EPIC. NE won’t forget this event.

A sitdown with one of our Reality Show finalists

Preface

The road to the next big reality show has many twists, turns and challenges, but we have yet to meet the the people whose stories will drive the show. While the final casting has yet to be announced and/or solidified, we sat down with three smart, talented finalists to find out more about them. Here’s Julie’s story, in her own words:

—————————————–

image

OM: Tell me about yourself

Julie:I just turned 30, I’m single, never been married, no kids, I live alone in Dartmouth, Mass. I like to travel. I like going out, I like sports, I like the gym. I mean I don’t really have any baggage, I don’t have any past relationships that are holding me back from anything, so at this point of my life (I’m) trying to figure out where I’m going next. I mean I have a bachelors in marketing, I think of myself as a pretty smart woman. It’s just at this point I’m a little lost because I’m so used to making that fast cash and basically doing what I want, when I want, if I want to get up one week and go on vacation I have no problem doing that. I just put in an hour later at work and I do what I want.

As far as that goes, that’s pretty much my life right now.

OM: What words would you say people use to describe you?

Julie: Sexy, intimidating, funny.

OM: What is your opinion of New England?

Julie: I like New England, I like the sports in New England, I like the summers, I mean there’s a lot of good things but… the weather kind of sucks. The people can be kind of…(trails off). I was living in Florida and the people are so friendly down there and up here people are like, “Eh” or angry. I’ve lived here my whole life so there’s a reason why I’m still here, but I don’t know (what to else to say)..

OM: Any causes you’re passionate about or any extracurricular activities you have? Any interests you have that’s unique to you that people don’t really know about?

Julie: Alright, well if there was a cause that I would definitely support, it would be addiction because I lost my mom to addiction and I have a sister that’s a major addict. I had, you know, friends and boyfriends that have been addicted to drugs as well. That’s a cause that I think really needs to be more recognized and there should be more knowledge about because, again, I lost my mom to alcohol and I watched her first-hand drink herself to death. There’s such a stigma to it where people are just like “Oh, well it was her choice to do that. She made her bed she can lie in it” kinda thing. And it’s kind of not fair because it's…I really do believe it is a disease and its just like cancer or whatever else that may be it. I think it needs to be recognized that its a disease and not (encourage others to) judge people so much for being an addict. It is a huge epidemic and it’s a huge problem. That’s something I’m passionate about.

As far as extracurricular activities, I love basketball. I used to play in high school and I was really good. I like sports, I love to dance and go out, get on the dance floor and just tear it up.

OM: What drives you? What motivates you? How do you like to live your life?

Julie:Obviously I have to make a living, but what definitely drives me is that I’ve always liked nice things and I like to travel. I’ve been in the industry because the money’s good and I never really came from money so that’s what kinda hooked me in the first place. It’s like easy money. Going to work (often means) I’m going to party but I’m getting paid too. What drives me is having nice things: having a nice car, having a nice home, traveling and seeing the world. That’s basically what the whole drive behind my hustle is.

OM: How has your process been, talking to Annmarie about the show and being interviewed and things are moving along; What is this like for you as a finalist?

Julie: it’s interesting and it’s exciting and it’s one of those things that I don’t want to get too excited about it - like if I don’t get casted - then I’ll kinda be bummed. (But) It’s a new experience and I think it would be cool. I’m really interested and I’m excited for what can become of it.

OM: What would you like people to know about you? Or anything you would say if you had a soapbox: about yourself or about life or about anything?

Julie: You can only have one life and it’s what you make of it. My whole life, I’ve been through a lot, I was on my own at a young age, I lost both my parents and I still went back to school and I held my head up high and I still worked and I got shit done and I didn’t let that get the best of me. I just kept moving and you can’t…(pauses). I don’t know why I’m here on Earth, I’m think I’m here for a reason. I’ve been through so much and I think I’m just such a strong person. At this point, I’m just very happy with who I’ve become and how my mom raised me. I still wake up everyday and I come look at myself in the mirror and I’m completely happy with who I am. It took me a long time to get to that point and I’m finally there and now I’m just…you know, I’m living my life and I’m enjoying every minute of it. And at the end of the day I’m a good person: I’m honest, I’m loyal, I’m an awesome friend. I mean I have a lot talents that my mom, thank god, she blessed me with.Yeah…I’m happy.

While the AMD Candi is busy with All-Star Weekend, securing events four months down the line, finishing photoshoots and working on the post-production of music videos, CEO Annmarie Debrito has been fastidiously working for her next big venture: reality television. While AMD Candi remains a separate entity from the show, stay tuned to our social links for some major news to drop very soon.

No stranger to ambition, Debrito admits she may have let the cat out of the bag a bit too early. Typically, the reality show process from an idea written on a napkin to setting your DVR to record takes about a fewyears. But the good news is, the team is actively finalizing cast members and will soon start filming this in warmer temperatures this Summer. As a Rhode Island native, Debrito plans to showcase the beauty of the state including Newport, Providence, and Jamestown, the home of the stars, with much of New England to be shown as well.

I met with Annmarie to ask some user-generated questions to which she enthusiastically replied:

Have you gotten much or any support?

Annmarie Debrito: Absolutely, the networks have been great and given me the support I need. Business owners in RI, have also given me tons of support, along with those very close to me. Its not about the quantity, but more about the quality of supporters. This I have most definitely learned. But, most importantly I have GOD and that’s what matters to me.

Annmarie with Casting Director, Catia Dossantos

Whysotight-lipped?

Annmarie Debrito: Obviously, with any concept and project you have to be tight-lipped because you sign a non-disclosure agreement and to create anticipation.

What CAN you tell us?

Annmarie Debrito: I am so excited and proud of this project. It will showcase a very high-spirited cast and director who will be sharing an amazing story. The show is going to be so fabulous and it will be shot in RHODE ISLAND, my home state. This is something so unlike anything ever done in Rhode Island and I can’t be more delighted.

Is the show local to Providence too?

Annmarie Debrito: Yes, the main shooting locations will be in Rhode Island, but I will also be shooting in Massachusetts and Connecticut. It will most definitely capture New England.

What show is it similar to?

Annmarie Debrito: With reality shows, they all share the same outcome which Is letting you into the actors personal lives and showing who they are. As far as the storyline there isn’t anything like that out there.

What’s new about your project?

Annmarie Debrito: We just signed the contract for the home that we will be shooting at in Jamestown, which is very exciting.

image

Why this network?

Annmarie Debrito: I went with this network, because I thought it was the best fit for the content of my show. It was between 2 networks and I went with the one I found most fit.

When are you filming?

Annmarie Debrito:  If casting, goes well and I find the right ladies then we will begin this summer. I am not in a rush. This has to be right. The cast has to be perfect. I’m not just looking to have 1 season. I want seasons after seasons.

When does it air?

Annmarie Debrito: That I do not control. Once filming is complete the network chooses what day, time slot, and season they air the show.

Can I be apart of it?

Annmarie Debrito: Absolutely, we will be announcing when we will need extras for different seasons. Just follow us on IG, Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr and stay connected through our newsletters.

How can we promote?

Annmarie Debrito: You can promote by word of mouth, and through your social sites. This is very exciting for the State of Rhode Island.

How should we stay tuned?

Annmarie Debrito: Follow us on IG, Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr and stay connected through our newsletters.
