LONDON REPORTBACK!

Today an anti-refugee march was supposed to start at the Home Office depot centre in Croydon, it was promoted by various far-right and white nationalist figures and shared in neo-Nazi telegram chats. The protest was called by “Little Veteran” who is known for harassing migrants around Kent, and largely promoted by James Goddard, neither of which turned up today though.

Infact not many people did; the racist crowd never grew beyond 30 people, eventually a crowd of up to 200 anti-racist protesters surrounded them in the car park. Police were well organised and used extensive force to keep antifascists away from the racist crowd.

As the day progressed antifascists managed to occupy the meeting point for the anti-refugee protest, the handful of far-right were cornered in the car park. They spent the rest of their time sitting in a police kettle drinking cannies and looking miserable, until the police gave them an escort to the nearest pub. They never had that march.

The people of Croydon were overwhelmingly supportive of the pro-refugee crowd and the efforts to drown out the other group. The far-right are not welcome in our communities or city, London is Antifascist!

It’s officially New York Fashion Week S/S 2022. While we have postponed our annual NYFW show at Brooklyn Museum for the second year in row (we will be back!), we did so out of an abundance of caution given that our annual program - the largest queer fashion show in the US and possibly globally - attracts 2000+ attendees indoors. However, we were invited to #worldpride2021 by @visitsweden and sent a vaccinated and tested correspondent to cover the amazing exhibitions and virtual events, including #THEAMSTERDAMRAINBOWDRESS - a living work of art made of all the national flags from countries where homosexuality is illegal, on penalty of imprisonment, torture, or capital punishment. When a country adopts LGBTI+ inclusive legislation, the respective flag shall be replaced with a rainbow flag. Designers: Mattijs van Bergen, Arnout van Krimpen, Jochem Kaan and Oeri van WoezikIn.
Virtual events at the conference sessions cerebrating #MalmöPride also included:
TransFashion Show
Double oppression – LGBTQI Youth of Color
Rainbow refugee community – What it means to be a minority within a minority
#YouAreIncluded – Debunking myths around LGBTI+ people, religion and faith
We were especially excited for the Summit on refugees, borders and migration (Summit om flyktingar, gränser och migration), which confronted global discourses concerning borders, refugees and immigration through an LGBTQIA+ lens.
Visit our link in bio for access to the recorded conference sessions as well as a guide to all of the amazing art, food, and drinks in MALMÖ, SWEDEN! #queertravel #dapperQ #pride2021 #refugeeswelcome #queerfashion (at Malmö, Sweden)

“HIP HOP AND NEGROES ARE THE BEST!
I am a WHITE 14 year old hip-hop girl. I love negroes, as many others like me do, but there are some who hate so-called "blackies”. I have a friend who have told me a horrible but true story:
There was a WHITE little boy who lived in an appartment complex. He was perhaps 3-4 years old and lived on the 7th floor. That kid felt the need to pee when he was down at the yard, on his way up he meets a colored woman. She sees that the boy needed to pee and lets him borrow their WC.
The day after comes the boy’s mom and curse out the black woman because she let her son in, the last word she says are “You don’t touch my child one more time you fucking nigger!”
Us white people are sooo nice. I just can’t believe how one could say such things just because this person has another SKIN COLOR.
Jeez, we all look the same on the inside.
Then I can also add that when you compare a white and a black person that dance with each other, the black dance a 1000times better. I love negroes now and forever. But now I know that there are more people like me who like negroes (even other foreigners) and that’s very fortunate. But even
if many like them, there are way too many who doesn’t like them, but perhaps you can never change that. Lastly I just want to write ONE MORE thing: hip hop is awesome!

Last week I was able to travel to Italy thanks to generous funding from EURAC to attend their MSC Week. One of the best parts of this trip was having the chance to meet my Syrian Arabic teacher, Asalah, in person for the first time. Asalah’s been tutoring me via Skype through a program called Natakallam since 2015 when she was still living in Lebanon and couldn’t work legally. Last December she and her husband were notified that they had been chosen for resettlement in Italy and were relocated just 10 days later.

Since moving to Milan Asalah’s continued tutoring me and other students via Natakallam, and has also been learning Italian full-time and working on weekends in a school for heritage Arabic speakers. It was incredible to see how quickly she’s adapted to her new city and country, learning about the cuisine, culture, history and political situation in just a few months. Last Saturday she even invited my friends and I to come see a protest for immigrant rights that she was participating in along with the school where she works.

I’ve learned a lot about Asalah via Skype, but it was something unique to actually meet her in person. People’s resilience and tenacity, especially that of individuals who leave everything and start anew, never ceases to amaze me, and I’m feeling very grateful that I have people like her in my life to give me hope.

Here’sa story that Marketplace did last year on my conversations with Asalah through Natkallam.
