this one has become my go-to vid for my panic disorder. As a kid I was in a horrible abusive situation, and the abuse I received was blamed on me for being afraid. So I guess it’s no surprise that decades of repression later, I’ve developed a disorder that could be summed up as a fear of fear. And when my fears get so strong and I wish so hard to suppress them, when I feel like I cannot handle it any further, when I feel completely lost, I come to this vid and it helps me live with and accept my fear better than anything else I know.
Then, suddenly, being scared isn’t so scary anymore.
I’m so, so glad that this video brings you that kind of comfort!! Especially since I almost didn’t post it because I felt it was “unfinished”. Truthfully, I made it because I, too, was going through a lot of fear at the time. I had just started a new job where a HUGE amount of responsibility was put onto my shoulders and I was in constant dread that I would mess it up. From a young age, I always felt like I wasn’t good enough to be professional at, well, anything and the 1+ year of unemployment before this job only strengthened that belief. Walking through fear SUCKS but I’m aware now that I feel it when I’m afraid of losing something I have or not getting something I want. And for me, that’s living in a future that doesn’t exist yet. Fear also points out very important things to me, like what I might be putting too much reliance on, or how much I value things, so it isn’t all bad. It can definitely be our superpower (and I’m grateful for that speech from Dr. Who, because it’s so wonderfully articulated).
All of our fears are different and I’m sorry yours can be so overwhelming, but I’m glad that something I made can help you with that. So, you’re welcome. :)
And I’m sorry I took awhile to respond. I saw a notice for this in my inbox and it really touched me, but then life completely distracted me (as it does these days).
Hygge: The act of relaxing with loved ones and good friends, usually while enjoying food and drink; the word is associated with coziness
On a typical wintry day in Seoul, the weather was freezing cold and it was difficult for people to stay outside, even though layers of clothing were being worn. Thankfully, Jihyo was able to stay at home with her friend, Naeun. The friends lounged in Jihyo’s living room, wrapped up in their blankets, drinking wine and munching on snacks like sweet potato chips, ddeokbokki, and kimbap.
It had been awhile since the two have physically seen one another, and every time they spent time together, catching up and bonding was always enjoyable for them. Bursts of laughter and loud chatting were filling the room, the girls were all smiles and talking about the topic consisting of celebrity crushes.
“Yah, Tom Hardy is such a hunk! Every time I mention him to someone, I feel they judge me or think I have a chance with him. The man is taken.. It would be a dream come true if I could end up with someone like him!” The elder of the duo gushed over her ideal type, having a shiny sparkle in her eyes and being immersed into her commentary. “He’s so manly, strong and seems mysterious too. I wish, I could figure out more about him. He is very intriguing!” Realizing she didn’t know her friend’s celebrity crush, she switched the attention to her friend and questioned, “Omo, do you have a celebrity crush?”
: Loves them platonically. : Feels pretty indifferent towards them. : Looks up to them as a role model.
“Omo…” Her mouth formed an ‘o’ at what the other had revealed. She wouldn’t say she felt entirely the same, since she on the other hand, didn’t feel indifferent towards the male. Though, the platonic and role model sentiments could be referred back to himself.
“I appreciate your honesty, thank you for telling me how you feel about me! I hope, the indifferent feelings go away soon. I need to work on that. Let’s get closer! I feel you’re more of a role model figure rather than myself. It means a lot to me, that you think of me highly.. I don’t feel worthy, aigoo.” She jabbered on, sensing her face burn in embarrassment while a small smile took over her rosy lips.
Jihyo was quite busy since the start of the new year, and with her upcoming movie’s promotions coming up soon, she was probably going to be even busier than usual. Luckily, she was able to return to her home for a short rest period. Before she could even take a step inside, she noticed a wrapped box laying right in front of her.
Did I order something…? No…. I don’t think so…. It’s not Christmas anymore, and it’s not my birthday either…. Confusion was apparent on her visage, Jihyo’s brows knitting together as her lips formed a big pout.
With careful fingers, she picked up the box with one of her hands, unlocking the front door to her home with the other. She immediately locked it once she made an entrance, not wanting anyone to see what she just encountered.
Setting the box on her dining table, she neatly got rid of the box’s wrapping paper, lifting the box’s top gently before being greeted with a dazzling item. “Wow, daebak - What in the world?!” Shock filled her expression; a hand covering her mouth while staring at the gift with widened eyes.
“Omo, ottoke?!” She squealed, finding a note and reading it as soon as she got her hands on it. She couldn’t help, but gape even more to the realization of who sent this to her. “Youngbae? Aigoo, this dongsaeng…” Obviously, she was happy to receive such a luxury, but to figure out that Youngbae gave her yet another gift out of the blue, she was also in awe.
She didn’t want to think too much about it, and decided to give a text to her friend, expressing words of gratitude within the text.
( `SMS ) Youngbae-yah, you’re too cute! Thank you so much for the gift! I didn’t expect it, but you never fail to surprise me. I need to repay you, okay? Don’t reject it! Saranghae! ^^
Thankfully, the parking lot wasn’t a huge one and it only took him about twelve seconds to travel the distance between their cars. Given that this was their first time meeting in person, he wasn’t sure how much of his badinage personality to let through so he decided to be conservative. He also noticed how much she took to conceal her identity, meanwhile he only had on sunglasses. Nevertheless, it was a joy to finally see his elder and he gave a quick bow in advance to taking in her embrace “Ah, noona, annyeong. I was honestly just hoping it was you cause I wasn’t sure” The first of his jokes referencing her ‘disguise’ “The television doesn’t do your beauty justice.” He had his hands tucked in his pockets, as was his usual habit “Ah, I’m not too sure, it’s been a while since I’ve been here so I figured we’d just wander around a little.“
She bowed as well to return the politeness. "I’m happy you remembered what my car looked like. Otherwise, I think we would have taken a longer time to find each other.” She chuckled and eventually realized he was teasing her appearance too. “Ah, you’re a jokester. Mian, if I went out with nothing covering my identity.. I feel like we would have had others approaching us quicker.” Her cheeks formed a bright red hue at the compliment. “Omo, really? Is it okay to make me melt here, right now? You also look handsome and youthful. Do you go to the gym often?” She curiously asked since she noticed his build seemed to be fit. “That sounds like a fine idea. You can lead the way, dongsaeng!” She made a hand motion that signified for him to begin heading to whichever direction he desired to go towards.
Jihyo and Jinki were spending Christmas together at Jihyo’s home. She had made some delightful treats that were related to the holiday; mashed potatoes with gravy, roasted ham, green bean casserole, pecan pie and Christmas cookies. They were munching on the meal while being engaged in watching one of the most famous movies of Christmas, Home Alone. The living room echoed with their chuckles, cackles and loudness. Each scene of the mentioned movie brought some type of emotion, and couldn’t avoid a reaction.
“Yah, this movie is always a classic. It never gets boring, right?” She asked when they reached the end of the movie, having a huge smile on her face as she glanced at the younger. Jinki mirrored the smile she had shown and nodded quickly, letting out comments of praise. “No matter how many times I’ve seen this movie, it always makes me laugh and want to watch it again and again!”
“Yes, I think I watch this movie at least once every year, it’s a must watch sort of movie. Shall we watch another movie now, or play a game?” It wasn’t too late at night, so Jihyo wasn’t ready to sleep or shoo her guest away. She was so grateful that she could celebrate Christmas with someone she adored, plus it felt like luck was on her side to see Jinki wanting to take time out of the holiday to hang out with her.
“Hmmm, sure. We can watch another movie. You can choose it!” He gave the respect to allow the elder to make a selection, since he decided on the first movie already. In the midst of her skimming through the options, he sensed drowsiness and rubbed at his eyes, trying to shake off the unwanted feeling. Her eyes were glued to the screen, to the point she didn’t spot the male’s change of state.
Pickiness came in her, resulting for her to finally select a film within a few minutes. “Ah, this movie shouldn’t disappoint. It’s called, Elf and it’s with Will Ferrell. He’s funny, I swear. Have you seen this movie?” Glance still plastered towards the television’s screen, she waited for a response from Jinki, who was half asleep and starting to lean her way. “Jinki-yah, did you hear me?” As she turned to his direction, his head gently pressed against her shoulder. Soft snores emerged from him with his eyes completely shut, deep into slumber.
She was a bit flustered, but quietly laughed the weird sentiment away and pet her friend’s head lightly. “Yah, why didn’t you tell me you were tired?” She said in a whisper, raising the blanket they shared until it covered him from his neck to his toes. Her back was pressed against the couch as she permitted for them to sleep upon her side. Eventually, she happened to feel dozy and three seconds later, as expected, she fell asleep too.
That’s a good idea! Drinking together~ Just me and Teukkie drinking together is impossible. There always has to be someone else with us. It’d be fun! He’s a swell guy, although I’m not the best person to endorse my leader-and-hyung-by-nine-days. ㅋㅋ Noona could write down the best traits about each other member and I can send it to each one of them. Again, they’d likely doubt me, but they don’t doubt my connections and closeness with my friends. Ahhh~ There’re so many experiences that looking back, really are so funny. Still, there are times in life where it can still bring hilarious moments, especially when there’re less repercussions since we’re older. Mm, it has to do with metabolism, but I guess it runs in their families too. It doesn’t help that our leader has been working out so he wants nothing more than to show off his abs. >.> Attention-seeker until the end, that punk… ㅋㅋ Yeah, like, in lyrics I wrote for “Charm of Life”, people took it the wrong way. I was so pissed, but of course, I had to hold it in. I don’t have to apologize to anyone, though. We know what we’re doing when we’re writing lyrics, thanks. ㅋㅋ Ah, well. It’s my showcase of unbridled affection. Being sweet is hardly my style to people I’m close with. I don’t know if that’ll be the case when I do meet someone~ ㅋㅋㅋㅋ I’m sure people would have wanted juicy scoops from you. Yah! Those are perfect. I’ve actually done all those once or twice. Noona indeed knows me well. ㅋㅋ I’m not much in pain now since I’ve been resting my leg, so noona doesn’t need to feel hurt for me~! Pffft, yet again, you’ve guessed a habit of mine! But I like singing sad rock songs too. That’s why Buzz’s songs are right up my alley.

“The only reason I had a hard time was that I wasn’t good at studying. It’s like, a common fact. Most of the time, I have to rely on my friends who speak that language. I knew a lot of Mandarin Chinese because of Hangeng and because I have fans on China, and some Japanese from either Donghae and Hyukjae who tours to Japan often. But you’re right, translators are life savers. I don’t have much time to study like I used to– Okay, sometimes I’m just lazy.” Heechul shook his head and grinned. His grin then widened as he crossed his arms against his chest with an expression that was a mix of excited and amused. “Speaking of learning languages, when noona learns a language herself, do you learn the curse words first?” It was what Hangeng accused him of back then in Intimate Note, for an essential lesson for foreigners to adjust to a country’s language was through studying the curse words to avoid looking clueless to such vulgarity being addressed. “Our debut song, ‘Twins’, actually had elements of rock guitar in it, but it’s still has that pop beat. Mm~ I think with a job like ours, the sky’s the limit! Idols can become actors, writers, directors, producers, MCs… And all my members are one of those coincidentally.”
Heechul chuckled, shaking his head. “I think it’s funny to see some unimaginable scenarios happen, but sometimes the personalities are too different, or that they know only the member at the surface level that it’s like reading another character altogether. But don’t get me wrong, I don’t want to make it a habit. The other members don’t want any part of it, though. Guess I’m the only one who gains a bit of fun from it.” The peak of those adventures was when he had more time to surf the Internet on his desktop to check the deepest spaces of the web. Funnily, some of the writing was so bad they were like parodies, but in contrast, some were written so beautifully it made him tear up at some points. To think such pieces were crafed because it was simply as a hobby was an interesting notion for Heechul. “I think it’s more natural for Donghae. I had to get used to Siwon. There was that time when we used to share a bed together, and I was so cranky and exhausted that when he turned around to my side of the bed, I ended up yelling at him so he slept at the car.” He covered his mouth with his hand in mild abashment. “So you can say I’ve really changed. I don’t really mind it with noona, I swear! That was the past, and this is the present.” He nodded to reassure Jihyo that there wasn’t anything to worry about. “Yah, if only Dongwook hyung’s schedules wasn’t in conflict back then, he would have made his debut on Knowing Brothers! Hodong hyung would especially be ecstatic to see him again.”
“I think, it’s really helpful to have friends who can help with speaking and understanding different languages. Sometimes, they can help you learn the language better than a teacher or stranger, since the closeness and interest is stronger. Aigoo, being busy and lazy is relatable. I don’t blame you!” She blinked and lifted her brows, looking to the side while thinking if she really did what he inquired. “Honestly, I haven’t learned them first. I don’t think I know a lot of them, maybe like one or two? I am an expert at cursing in Korean, though!” Flashing a thumbs up, she giggled at her self-made compliment. People did know her for being the type of person that curses a lot, and there were times she couldn’t hold back from cursing on variety shows, like when she was angry or irritated. It was a natural habit she grasped, and wasn’t able to get rid of. “Ah, that’s right! Some of the songs that you guys released do have rock vibes. Don’t Don would be considered rock too, right? That was a cool era.” She made a ‘wow’ sound to show her admiration and reminisce towards that specific comeback.
“Ah, I get that. I guess, that’s probably a reason why it’s called fanfiction, right? I feel it’s impossible for our fans to know us 100%. They just get to know us more onstage, and through shows, but we don’t reveal everything about ourselves publicly. It would be creepy if their assumptions upon our actions were always accurate, omo. Some people are comfortable with the idea, and some aren’t. You’re just more easygoing with that than they are.” Sometimes, she wondered if other celebrities have read fanfiction regarding themselves and someone that the writer found them to be compatible with. If Heechul read them, maybe it wasn’t unlikely that others did too. “Aigoo, I’ve heard that story with Siwon a few times. I think, he even said it himself on My Ugly Duckling. Yah, you had no mercy. Sleeping in a car isn’t always fun or safe. I feel bad for that fellow!” She pushed her lips out to pout, but automatically nodded and eased at his next words. “Seeing you grow into a kinder and softer human being, is interesting, but I’m happy I got to see those sides from the beginning!” She picked up the dessert she prepared, noticing he wasn’t eating it and didn’t want him to eat it when it gets cold or soggy. “Here, eat while we chat. You don’t want it to go bad, do you?” She grinned. “Omo, he is a big fan of the show. Yah, I just heard from him that Lee Soogeun oppa was on his talk show. That gives me hope to be on the show too. Who knows? You can be on it also!”

Hi! We’d like to talk to you about “strong statements” – statements that can be shocking, debatable, or oversimplified.
And also about “strong arguments” – which tend to be logical and convincing.
People sometimes use strong statements as if they are strong arguments. But those are different things.
The title of this post is a strong statement. But it would be hard to make a strong argument that the title of this post is true.
“Strong” statements are strong in some ways. They can convey a forceful mood, or catch people’s attention. They can prompt people to be more certain and militant about opinions they already have. They can make people feel obligated to take a side. They can be a shortcut to expressing yourself when you don’t have the time, skill, or energy to use gentle and precise words.
In reality, we just think “strong” statements are less convincing than most people seem to think they are.
Sometimes it seems like because what you have to say is important, you should say it in the strongest terms possible. It can even feel like a moral obligation to speak up for your side forcefully.
Really, it depends on what you want to accomplish. When people hear something that disagrees with their beliefs too much, they tend to dismiss it out of hand.
A persuasive statement might be one that is harder for people to dismiss out of hand. Or a statement that the other person technically agrees with, but that has difficult implications for their argument.
Sometimes it’s the most understated or “weak” statements that end up being the most convincing.
If an idea is true and very important, then getting people to agree with it or think carefully about it is a good thing.
When your main goal is to be convincing, it’s useful to sometimes explain your deeply held beliefs in mild terms. It can make your argument stronger and more difficult to dismiss.
Even when it feels like it’s the other way around.
This can easily turn into blaming prejudice on the victims of prejudice. No matter how many victims of prejudice argue in mild terms, if a single one speaks about the harsh facts of prejudice, the people who’re engaging in prejudice can point to that person in order to dismiss all prejudice victims as “shrill” or “strident.” And concern trolls who frame themselves as allied to victims of prejudice will push indefinitely for strong arguments not to be made, always saying that the arguments should be made at some later date because making them now would just alienate people. It’s a cycle where speaking out against prejudice is not part of the Overton Window, so people don’t speak out or are marginalized for speaking out, so speaking out can’t become normalized and fall within the Overton Window.
We agree that the Letter From a Birmingham Jail is good reading on this issue.
We think there’s a big difference between the idea that strong statements are often not the most persuasive, and the ideas that strong statements are a valid excuse to dismiss arguments related to them or that it is somehow wrong to make strong statements.
It’s good to be reminded that people may fall into the trap of using the former idea to justify the latter ideas. We do not want to endorse doing that.
If you’re arguing with someone, tell them when they say something you agree with.
When you don’t, things get… confusing.
If you don’t know where you agree with someone, then you don’t really know where you disagree either. Let’s see what happens when you do stop to agree with people:

This also helps people understand why you disagree with them. We all have chains of reasoning in our minds. When two people disagree, it’s usually at least partly because the chain of reasoning in one person’s head parts ways with the chain of reasoning in the other person’s head.
If you don’t tell people which parts of their argument you agree with, it’s hard to pinpoint that spot where your opinions diverge. You leave them to guess.
People will rarely ask if they are correct about their guesses. It’s a deceptively automatic process for people to assume they already know why you disagree with them.
If you acknowledge exactly where someone’s reasoning overlaps with yours, it’s harder for them to fall into that assumption.
My problem: what do you do when it’s turtles all the way down? I’m not quite arrogant enough to call someone fractally wrong, but at the very least, I’ve encountered many whose beliefs are fractally unexpected, with each belief I didn’t see coming supported by an underlying belief I also didn’t see coming. For that matter, my own commonly expressed values are based on ideas that are based on ideas that are based on more ideas! By the time I make it far down enough to actually have a point in common, the other person is bored of the conversation!
Good point. Sometimes it’s turtles all the way down. If this happens to you often, you might know more about how to deal with it than we do. But a couple suggestions:
1) As soon as you notice that there are a lot of turtles, change your goal from convincing the other person to just understanding their perspective. This can sometimes make the conversation less boring for the other person, because you’re coming at it from a place of, “I don’t understand how you see this issue. Help me understand.” It makes the other person an expert in the topic at hand, and it’s fun to be the expert.
(That’s also a good time to ask yourself whether or not the conversation is worthwhile to you, since your goal in having the conversation has changed.)
2) Cut to the chase. Certain turtles tend to be on the bottom, and you can skip straight down to them. Things like,
“How do you decide whether you think something is true? I often look to groups of scientific studies. But I know some people prefer to reason deductively from bible verses or a certain belief set. Some people rely more on their own experiences or feelings. Some people reason inductively from the words of various people whose opinions they trust. Some people start with common errors of thought, and avoid beliefs that look similar to those errors. Can you describe how you tend to arrive at your conclusions?”
or,
“What do you want the world to look like? I have goals that involve all humans being safe, and happy, and free to do pretty much anything except hurt people or destroy good things. A lot of my opinions are based on those goals. Do you share my underlying goals? What qualities make up your idea of a functional community?”
Basically, find as many turtles as possible that are near the bottom of how you think, and throw them at people until something interesting happens.

I’m still really caught up in a lot of emotions about his internalized homophobia, and Bitty trying so hard to reach out to him and reassure him hurts my heart.
Also, his lack of excitement about his parents makes me very anxious for him, and feeds my thoughts about the internalized homophobia, and also his general fear of sexuality.
Jack Zimmermann’s body should be outlawed. Lordy.
That feeling is so incredibly awful and isolating and scary, and I know a lot of us don’t have to imagine it, or imagine the special kind of pain that comes from watching someone you care about seem to struggle with it.
Bits is clearly super upset about how Whiskey’s feeling/how he thinks he’s feeling, and his anxiety and worry over it is hard to see, and also perfectly illustrates why we love him as much as the SMH does.
Jack and B Haus sleepovers are common.
Also though, imagining Jack’s feet poking out of the covers and hanging off the end of the bed is hilarious. These two are both athletes and muscled accordingly, the only way they could possibly share a twin is for them to be pretty much on top of each other. “Cozy” indeed, Jaques.

I’ve always sorta thought that Coach would be the parent that was more accepting of Bitty, and Suzanne would be more distant and cool towards him, and this is not dissuading me. I’m so, so happy to see how happy and comfortable he is waiting for/seeing Bits is amazing, and I hope it puts Bitty at ease and gives him comfort.
And, finally and very very importantly, the “Hi, Daddy” nearly killed me, because Bitty so rarely (maybe once or twice in canon?) refers to his dad as anything other than" Coach, and here it’s almost as if it snuck out because he was caught off guard by his dad’s appearance– both his early arrival and his big, proud papa smile.
Next update is gonna be A Lot.
Whiskey just didn’t get any undercut- he got THE CHOP. Samwell’s proud tradition of incoming sophomores getting the gayest haircut possible. WHISKEY did that. For comparison:
Also, everyone has seen Bitty’s vlog now. Assumed, of course, particularly with that early year 4 announcement about going private, but still. Did the guys get to see the earlier videos before Bitty made it all private? Particularly the Jack ones? And now that he’s back, will those go up or stay private? Now I’m picturing all the new eggs/frogs getting ready to go off to Samwell and their moms are like, “Can you ask Bitty about his shortbread recipe?!?” Or parents being all CONCERNED about the class and quality of the Haus and the SMH team because that kiss and scandal and clutched pearls so they look up Bitty’s vlog and watch it all and it’s just so sweet and pure and suddenly they’re feeling very, very protective of one (1) small Southern boy and are ready to fight on his behalf.

I’m glad you liked my additions! I didn’t realize until I saw Whiskey’s Samwell Chop that since Bitty has grown out his undercut by the beginning of year 3 that Whiskey may not be aware that he now has the same haircut that his gay, out, boyfriend of a NHL-Stanley-Cup-Winner, captain had his sophomore year as well.
I actually wrote today!!! Do you guys know what a big deal that is these days? These days I’ve been so invested in my need to support and hold up other writers - which is very important too, don’t think I’m downplaying the importance of lifting you all up - that I’ve been completely neglecting my creative side.
Like… I’ve been running my blogs, working on my new big project and playing vidja games. I haven’t really creatively written other than my fiverr projects (and even then, it’s character introductions and development, so not really creative writing), but today? At lunch? Spent the whole time talking to my husband then working on my musical script.
Wrote two whole scenes! :D
So proud of myself for taking the time to work on MY creative project <3

But I actually think I might eventually finish that story, which almost never happens xD I’m great at starting new stories, not so great at reaching the end of them.

All those shit my grandparents said that living is worth something are FUCKING LIES. If ever I want opt out of life, I want it to be brutal and painful. A punishment that I deserve.
A comic about the spectrum of responses to stress - we talk alot about the more extreme ends of this and trauma, but the more subtle and every day responses can be harder to spot. if we can understand our own and other’s responses better, problems Are easier to confront and blaming is less likely to happen :) hope it’s helpful!!
i can understand why clothes drying machines exist but have never used one. they probably wear out clothes and some fabrics so much faster than air drying… i’m team having your clothes have a regular soaking in the sun for a few hours even if it means feeling like you’re letting pollution germs go into your inner garments… because that builds character and is more cinematic… even if i have a dryer someday i will never love it or cherish it
