March 2016 Freebies

Thanks to science, this month’s calendar wallpaper was inspired by cells! Studying zoology has me surrounded by pictures of microscope slides of different cells pretty much 24/7. It’s such a fascinating and eye-opening course. I’m so glad I’m taking it this semester!

How about you? What class (or classes) are you enjoying so far this school year? Let me know through the comments section or leave me a message!

Some snaps from my birthday week aka seven days of stress, all-nighters and tears: The week was off to a good start when I got a perfect score in my final arnis practical test for the semester (can I fight alongside Melinda May or Bobbi Morse now?) and somewhere in the middle of the week, I aced a long test in Chemistry (I was really worried about this because I got a pretty bad mark in the last one). But the best part of it all was that at the end of the week, I found out that my class average in Chemistry surpassed the cut-off grade to get exempted from taking the final exam! Imagine my excitement and relief to know that I have one less exam to study for!

Songs that got me through the week:
Budapest by George Ezra
Hotline Bling by Drake (because I like to dance around in my room at three in the morning)
Never Enough by One Direction
Need The Sun To Break by James Bay

Oooh last calendar for the year!!!! Huge thanks to those who used my past calendars and to those who sent their thoughts about them! I am definitely going to continue posting calendars next year (with a new design and layout, of course!) because of the good feedback that I received, so I hope you stick around!

Photo from 23 November 2015: Many many thanks to the amazing people here at Tumblr and Snapchat who sent their birthday greetings. Especially to those who made my inbox explode with so much love at midnight. Today’s already one of the best birthdays I’ve had (it’s just nine in the morning here but I’m pretty sure the rest of the day will be awesome) because of you.

Little reminders for the struggling self
By Ariadne Arambulo | 2 min. read

Hi, friends! I know most of us are going back to school this week *cries*, and we might need that extra push to get through this, so here are a few things we could keep in mind:

Forgive yourself
Failed a couple of tests? Watched a whole season of your favorite TV show over the weekend instead of getting started on your research paper? (yes) Found your grades drifting into uncharted waters? No matter what happened last semester, forgive yourself. Make it your armor and remember that you have a clean slate in front of you. You get to start over. Take that chance and do things right this time.

Set realistic goals
And every time you accomplish them, treat yo self . Go ahead. You deserve it.

Show up
I know it’s inevitable to have those “meh” days when you’re physically present but mentally absent in class. Drink coffee, go on a short walk, or listen to your favorite music before coming to class to boost your energy. It also feels good to learn something new every day, so make the effort to get even just a little something out of those long class hours. It’s worth it.

Work hard
Do things that are meaningful to you and remind yourself of your dreams and aspirations. You got this!

Take care of yourself
During finals week last semester, my mantra was “pain is temporary, GPA is forever”. This pushed me to go through three full days without sleep, studying endlessly and not giving my mind and body the rest they deserved. It took me a fever, colds, a sore throat and recurring anxiety attacks to realize that that was pretty much their many ways of saying, “Giiirl you take care of your grades more than yourself.” Shake off those bad habits and make sure you invest time in yourself. Don’t wait for your body to send you spiraling into a dark abyss before you take action!

Revision Challenge

Take a few pages of your draft.  Go through each sentence, highlight any that are in passive voice, and rewrite them to be in active voice.

The goal of this exercise is to eliminate as much passive voice as possible.  Remember, passive voice is when the action is performed upon the subject of the sentence.  Active voice is when the subject of the sentence performs the action.  Active voice is easier to understand.  There are occasions when passive voice is appropriate, but you should try to use active voice as often as possible.

[For more detailed explanations, you can check out the following resources: XX ]

Revision Challenge

Take two characters from the same work and line up only their dialogue side-by-side.  Can you tell who is speaking based on just their dialogue?  If not, revise it!  If you aren’t sure, this is a great exercise to review with a peer.

The goal of this exercise is to make sure your characters speak in such a way that each character is recognizable without the need of speech tags.
