When the moon turns red anything can happen.

The distant sound of a bell echoed in the dark. Three vibrating tolls revealed the late hour. The sound traveled through the night and the silent stone wall, illumined by a lonely street lamp, was the only witness to the dark silhouette moving in its shadow. With the collar of his dark coat pulled tightly around his neck, Richard’s tall figure covered distance quickly, and he set his target on one of the few areas where he still could find a suitable prey. The lively streets in the city center.

Special thanks to @lathalea&@legolasbadass for all your support in this fic.

When the moon turns red anything can happen.

While the sun slowly painted the sky in bright colors, Richard stood by the window in his living room and looked out over the old buildings below him. Some of them had newly replaced copper roofs, and when they reflected the morning light, they looked like they were on fire. His empty crystal glass rested on the small side table next to the window and the last drops of wine had dried at the bottom. The restlessness in his body made his mood sour and every time his thoughts wandered to the brown-haired woman with the pale skin and alluring mouth, he sighed deeply. He murmured her name and the feeling of her name on his tongue made him clench his fists. What had she done to him? He, who had seen wars and death. The birth, rise and fall of great kings and queens. He had never let himself be affected by a woman, not to mention a human. He had shared lusty moments, followed by feral hunger and he had enjoyed more women in their beds than he could remember, but none of them had occupied his mind after he left them. That counted for both the ones willingly giving him what he desired, as well as the less fortunate he had to physically overpower after they discovered what kind of taste he favored. Sofia had not yet seen all he was capable of. Matthew had stopped Richard’s diabolic tourture of her just as she was about to reach true desperation for him, and he was sure Matthew acted out of jealousy. He growled. This had never been a problem between them in the past.

What a wonderful vampiry end to the story. I loved it. You captured the desolation so well. Poor everyone, but that is sometimes how vampire life goes…

Summary: Lilith Di Salvo is a detective with the NYPD. Having grown up as the daughter of a mafia boss, she hopes to make amends for the actions of her father. When a string of killings starts happening all over New York Lilith is tasked with finding the killer. However, the universe decides to take things up a notch when she receives a new partner who turns her entire life upside down and has her walking a fine line between good and bad.

If you would like to be added to the tag list just let me know. Enjoy!

Lilith stepped out of the apartment complex rubbing her forehead. After the first interview every other person, she interviewed stated, they hadn’t heard or seen anything. The man in room one twenty-one had been the only one to hear anything, and he hadn’t seemed too keen to talk to her. Opening her jacket, she pulled out her cigarettes opening them before pulling one out along with the lighter she kept in the pack. Placing it between her lips Lilith lit it with ease before slipping the lighter back into the pack. Inhaling she allowed the nicotine to calm her as she exhaled slowly putting the cigarettes back in their original spot. “I take it you didn’t have much luck.” Turning she saw Diaz walking up to her, his expression matched the annoyance in his voice. “One guy heard screaming but didn’t bother to check it out. I’m going to follow up with his workplace, maybe come back to question him. His body language made me believe he wasn’t telling me everything.” Diaz nodded, “think he saw something?” Lilith hummed as she watched cars pass by, “yes. I do. Whatever he saw or whoever he saw had to have scared him.” Suddenly the faint sound of Paint it Black was heard as Lilith pulled her phone from her back pocket. The words sergeant Dower lit up her screen and she groaned. “Uh oh. Someone’s in trouble.” Looking up Diaz had a smirk plastered on his face. Dropping her cigarette on the ground she stepped on it, turning her back to Diaz holding her middle finger up, “I’ll talk to you later.” Not bothering to wait for a response she walked across the street towards her car.

Swiping the green button she placed the phone to her ear, “what’s up sarge?”

“Lilith, I need you back at the precinct. We need to talk.”

“Give me thirty and I’ll be there.”

Hanging up Lilith climbed into her car, starting it before pulling away from the curb in the direction of the precinct. The drive there didn’t take as long as she originally thought, with traffic having cleared up. Pulling into the parking lot, she parked in one of the many rows of spaces. Jumping out she headed into the large brown building. Lilith nodded to the people who were hustling about in the building, as she made her way into her sergeants’ office.  No sooner she opened the door she noticed a man sitting with his back to the door across from Dower. “Ah Lilith. Come in, I’d like to introduce you to someone.” The unknown man stood up turning towards her, “I’m Richard. Sergeant Dower has told me quite a bit about you Mrs. Di Salvo.” Lilith was taken back by his voice it was deep but was soothing to hear. His eyes were a beautiful blue, reminding her of the ocean. Swallowing she kicked herself mentally for getting distracted as she took his hand into hers. She gripped it firmly shaking, “just call me Lilith. I’m sorry but I haven’t heard anything about you.” Releasing his hand her eyes drifted to Dower, “you said we needed to talk?” Nodding he pointed to the other chair that sat in front of his desk, “yes, sit please.”  Both she and Richard took a seat, and she could feel the rooms atmosphere shift slightly. “Richard is here on a transfer. I’m putting him with you as your partner.” Raising an eyebrow she gave a breathy laugh, “what? Sir with all due respect, I’ve always worked better alone.” She was doing her best to keep calm as to not get fired.

“I am fully aware of that. However, the past few months we’ve seen a rise in gang related activities. Not to mention the murder that happened last night. You would benefit from having a partner out on the streets. Someone to watch your back if shit were to go South.”

“Sir-” she was about to protest but was cut off by Sergeant Dowers hand coming down on his metal desk. “Detective Di Salvo. That is enough.” His eyes met hers. “Richard is going to be your partner. End of discussion.”

Lilith sat up straighter as she took a deep breath, “is that all sir?” There was malice in the words that the Sergeant didn’t miss but he shook his head. “Yes. That will be all. Please show him to his desk and when you head out again, he will be going with you.” Standing up Lilith nodded before turning and heading for the door.  Stopping she glanced back at her new partner. “Let’s go then. I don’t have all day.” Richard stood and followed her as she led him through the other desks of the office stopping at two that sat across from each other.  “This is my desk and that one’s yours, when we aren’t out there…” her thumb gestured to the open window where the city lay, “we are sat here doing paperwork, typing up reports, etc.” Turning to face him arms crossing over her chest she cocked an eyebrow, “any questions?” Richard smiled causing a warm sensation to run up her spine as she tried not to shiver. “No. No questions, seems like pretty standard stuff.”

“Good. I need to follow up with some leads, let’s go.” She headed towards the lobby of the building feeling Richard fall into step beside her. “Where are we headed?” She glanced at him as they reached the front door, “liquor store. Need to confirm with the owner that one of his employees was in fact working last night.” Richard opened the door holding it for her. “Sergeant Dower mentioned something about a murder last night. This employee you think he did it?” Lilith shook her head, “thank you, and no but he seemed like he was hiding something when giving a statement. I want to find out what.” They both made their way across the lot to her car, “where does he work?” Lilith unlocked the vehicle opening her door, “well his apartments on Parkside Avenue and he said that the liquor store he worked at is a block away. That’s really all he gave me but I do have a first and last name so it shouldn’t be too hard.”  They both climbed into the car as she looked to Richard, “I’m tasking you with being navigator. Think you can handle it?” A smirk played on his lips, eye never leaving hers as he pulled his phone from his pocket, “I think I can handle that Lilith.” Her stomach did a flip as her name rolled off his tongue, and her mind wondered just how good it sound if he was moaning it. She mentally slapped herself, he was her partner. He is off limits, and it was going to stay that way.  Swallowing she started the car as she focused on getting out of the parking lot.

Lilith had one hand resting on the steering wheel as she drove through the streets of New York. “So, Di Salvo. You wouldn’t happen to be related to Matteo Di Salvo?” She gripped the steering wheel. There it was the one question that was always asked when her last name was mentioned. She could see Richard looking out his window from her peripheral, “yeah. I’m his daughter.”

“His daughter? What made New York’s most notorious Dons daughter want to join the police force?”

Lilith pursed her lips, “I was born and raised within the mafia. As I got older, I saw shit no kid growing up should. Matteo is a cold bastard, simple as that.” She took a quick look at Richard to see him already staring at her. “You call him Matteo? Not dad?” She scoffed at the thought. Matteo was far from a father to her he was just another criminal on the roster. “That’s enough about me. What about you? What brought you to our little precinct, hmm?”  Richards deep chuckle sounded through the car and Lilith bit the inside of her cheek, good God the sound of this man was enough to send heat through any women. “Growing up I wanted to be an actor, figured I’d do more good becoming a police officer so I moved to the states. Ended up climbing that latter from there.”

“An actor? I can picture it.” A smirk played on her lips as she imagined him in costume. “What else can you picture?” The tone that was hidden behind his words made her stomach do the same flip it had done earlier. Clearing her throat, she pulled up along the curb eyes turning to him. His blue orbs were darker now, the world outside slowly disappearing. The atmosphere in the cab was becoming thick. Suddenly a car honked breaking her from the trance she was in. “We’re here.” Quickly she shut the vehicle off and damn near leaped from it, wanting to distance herself from Richard. Taking a deep breath, she walked towards the row of small stores that lined the sidewalk, she could hear him behind her as she pushed her way into the first dingy building. The bell chimed as they stepped inside. Shelves were stacked with the usual common variety of snacks and other items. Stopping Lilith glanced around the room noticing two security cameras one found at the front, and one found at the back. “I’m going to talk to the clerk. What was the name of guy?” She looked up at Richard, “Blake Pruitt. Said he worked until eleven pm.” Richard nodded once before he headed off to the counter. Glancing to the right she noticed a younger male restocking the sodas and walked over tugging her bade from her belt. “Excuse me.” He looked up at her, noticing the badge she was holding up. “My names detective Di Salvo. I was wondering if I could ask if you knew someone by the name of Blake Pruitt?”

He shook his head, “no ma’am. I’ve never heard of him.”

She nodded, “alright thank you.” Making her way back towards the door. Looking over her shoulder, she saw Richard heading her way. “Any luck?”

“Nope. They’ve never heard of him.” Pushing their way out onto the sidewalk she smiled up at him. “Onto the next then.”

~~~~~~
Both detectives had visited at least four other liquor stores, and each one had been a dead end. Groaning Lilith pulled out her cigarettes placing one between her lips and lighting it, inhaling the familiar smoke. She leaned back against the cool brick wall as Richard stared at her. “You know that those are bad for you right?”
Cocking an eyebrow, she gave a slight smirk, “you don’t say? I’ve never heard that one before.” Suddenly the cigarette was pulled from her mouth as fingers brushed her lips. Her eyes looked up to meet his. “I’m serious. You’re my partner, I don’t need you being unable to do your job.” He flicked it towards the street, their eyes never leaving each other’s. “I can do my job just fine, don’t do that again.” Pushing off the wall shoving her hands into her jacket pockets she headed towards the last shop on this street. She could hear heavy footfalls behind her Richard following closely behind.  Her mind lingered on the way his fingers felt against her lips. It was only for a moment, but she couldn’t deny how soft they were. She shook her head reaching the shop, she needed to stop thinking about this he was her partner that was it. She pushed the door open stepping inside. The bell chimed and she noticed the clerk look up from his magazine. “Hello welcome in.”
She tugged her badge loose flashing it as she walked towards him, “good evening, sir. I’m detective Di Salvo and I was wondering if I would be able to ask you some questions about a potential employee of yours?” The man sat up straightening himself up and nodded, “of course ma’am. Ask away.”
“Blake Pruitt. Does that name ring any bells?”
“Oh yes ma’am, he was here last night working the four to eleven shift. If you would like I have a clock in record I can show you, as well as security cameras.” He pointed above him. She gave a kind smile as she heard the bell chime again. Glancing back, she saw Richard walking up before turning her attention back to the clerk. “I’d love to take a look at your footage last night from the cameras if possible.”
“Oh of course, you’ll have to come to the back. That’s where we keep the monitors and such.” The man began to walk down the hallway that sat behind the counter. She went to walk behind the counter stopping as she felt a hand grabbing her arm gently. “I’m going to stay back here. Look around, if you need me yell. Okay?” She stared at Richards hand before looking back to his eyes, “I’ll be fine. Trust me, I can handle my own.” Tugging free she finished stepping behind the counter following the hallway to an open door where the clerk was staring at multiple screens. “I’m just rewinding the footage to last night.” She stepped up beside him nodding, “no worries. I appreciate the cooperation sir.” Once he finished rewinding through the last twenty-four hours, he stepped aside allowing her to take a seat. Lilith began scrolling too the allotted time that Blake worked. She saw him come into the shop and head to the back before coming back out to take a place at the counter. The next few hours he just sat there helping customers, cleaning, etc. However, at around nine pm someone entered the store in all black clothing. Their face was covered by a hood and dark sunglasses adorned their features. The unknown person walked to the counter, leaning against it. Blake and the figure began to converse very intently for what seemed like forever. Whoever this was Lilith could tell just how scared of them Blake was by his body language. She looked to the clerk, “would it be possible to get this footage somehow?”
“Of course, but I need to get ahold of my manager so he can help pull the footage. I can have it ready by tomorrow.” Lilith nodded as she stood up, “that sounds perfect. Thank you very much.” The clerk led her back to the front where she gave Richard a slight nod as she passed him his body falling into step with hers. He pushed the stores door open allowing her out first as he followed. “So, any luck?”
“Yup. Around nine pm last night someone came into the store. Whoever it was Mr. Pruitt seemed scared around them. I’m having the clerk get ahold of the manager so I can snag the footage.”
“What’s the plan with the footage?”
“Honestly, bring Mr. Pruitt in show it to him and ask him what it’s all about. I’m sure he will talk if we can offer him something. Maybe even protection.” As they approached the vehicle Lilith sighed and she glanced up at Richard from across the roof. “You want to go get a drink? I could use one.” He nodded as he tugged open the door, “I agree, you have a spot in mind?” Climbing in she started up the engine looking to him with a smile, “Oh yeah. Nice little sports bar about thirty minutes from here.”
~~~~~~~~

Lilith pulled into the dim lit parking lot, as she shut the engine off. “Here we are.” Climbing out she shut the door and head towards the dark oak looking double doors not bothering to wait for Richard. “Looks a bit run down.” She couldn’t disagree with him; it was in one of the more run-down parts of neighborhoods, but she loved this place. Pulling the door open she gestured for Richard to go first, “after you.” His hand came up over her head as he gripped the door, “ladies first.” She blinked up at him before shaking her head and stepping inside. The warm air felt nice in contrast to the cool night. One of the bartenders looked up from filling up a glass and smiled, “Lilith! Good to see you.”

Raising a hand, she gave a warm smile back as she walked towards the bar, “hey Bobby! Got room for two at the bar?” He nodded and gestured at the far end towards the door, “you betcha. The usual for you?” She nodded as she took a seat, leaning her upper body against the bar. “What about you big guy?” Richard climbed up on the stool beside her, “I’ll have the same. Thanks.”

“Mind if I ask you something personal?”

She shrugged her shoulders as Bobby came up to place their beers in front of them. “Depends on what it is.”

“Earlier you called your dad Matteo. Just curious as to why. If you don’t want to talk about it that’s fine too.”

Lilith sighed as she took a quick sip of her beer, “I don’t think there was ever a time I called him dad honestly. I was usually with my mom, so I never really got to know him aside from having dinner with him. Even then he rarely spoke to me.”

“So, he just neglected his daughter?”

She gave a breathy laugh looking at him, “not just his daughter, his wife too. I have a feeling he was pissed she didn’t have a boy. She was the best mom a kid could ask for though. All the memories I have she was always there, trying to give me the best childhood she could.”

“She passed?”

A sad smile tugged at her lips as she glanced down to her beer playing with the handle of the glass mug, “murdered.” Sucking in a shaky breath Lilith continued, “you asked why I joined, well that’s why. I hoped to find her killer, do more than that son of a bitch husband of hers. Sad thing is I have my suspicions he did it, wouldn’t even surprise me.”

“Shit Lil I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have asked.”

She gripped the glass handle, “don’t worry about it.” Tilting her head back she allowed the familiar beverage glide down her throat with ease. She set the glass down looking towards Richard his blue eyes were cast down at the glass in front of him. Gently she placed her hand on his arm, offering the best smile she could, “it’s fine really. I’ve learned over time that my mom she loved me and inspired me. She may be gone but her love is still here with me, and it always will be.” He looked at her, his blue eyes holding an emotion she was for once in her entire life unable to read. She suddenly realized his hand was now resting on top of hers, the warmth from his palm making her feel warmer than she had in a long time.

Hello all! Sorry for the late posts! This one took a bit longer than expected, as I had to step away due to struggling with Lilith talking about her mother to Richard. Brought back some family issues. I am doing better and I am back, I’m also working on Chapter 7 to Full Moon. That should be out sometime this week as well!

Lilith pulled up behind the ambulance, the red and blue lights flashing as people gathered around. Slipping out of the vehicle she slipped on her leather jacket closing the door, making her way towards the two officers that stood near the white sheet. Pulling the yellow caution tape up and stepping under she noticed the blood that now coated the grey sidewalk making it look almost black. “What do we have?” The two officers noticed Lilith as she pulled gloves from her pocket, slipping them on. “Jane doe currently. Looks to be in her mid-twenties, with multiple stab wounds.” Stepping to the side she crouched tugging the sheet up slightly, Lilith could barely make out the woman’s facial features. Her face had multiple lacerations and stab wounds along with her chest, and abdomen. The victims clothing was also missing leaving her in just undergarments. The blood on the wounds was coated with dry blood, which meant she was attacked at some point the night before. Curling her lip up slightly she turned her gaze to the two officers. “Let’s get these people back, I don’t want them seeing this when the coroners get here to do their jobs.” The men nodded as they moved towards the growing crowd trying to keep them behind the tape as best, they could. Dropping the sheet down she stood removing the gloves carefully. Lilith had been around the block when it came to murders, but she had never seen one to this extent. Leaving a victim unrecognizable meant that the perpetrator had to be one fucked up individual. Heavy footsteps pulled Lilith from her thoughts as she looked to see Diaz one of the other detectives in her precinct walking towards her with the coroner following closely behind.

“Didn’t think they’d send you out to.” He gave a courteous smile as he slipped under the caution tape stepping up beside her. “Has to be bad if they sent their two best detectives out.” Taking a deep breath she nodded, “it is bad. Victims been left completely unrecognizable, and the sick bastard also left her in her undergarments.”  Diaz pursed his lips crossing his arms his eyes scanning around them as he nodded his head towards an apartment complex that overlooked the area. “Think someone saw something?” Lilith followed his gaze, “it is a high probability, but the question is will any of them agree to speak with us. This is not exactly the greatest neighborhood.”

“That is true. But there must be someone up there with a conscious right?”

“Maybe. Only one way to find out.” She began walking towards the large building with Diaz following, both agreeing it was best to let the coroners work without them both in the way. Upon entering the apartment complex both detectives were on high alert, “You take the downstairs here, I’ll head upstairs.” Diaz nodded his head as they split apart, Lilith ascending the stairs with ease. Looking both ways she noticed doors lined either side, and a standard exit sat at the very end of the hallway. Turning she decided she would start on the left side where the windows faced towards the street. Her boots thumped against the carpet as she stopped at door one twenty-one raising her hand, she knocked a few times. Shuffling could be heard on the other side before the door was opened, and a man stood before her. He stared Lilith up and down his brow creasing. Pulling her badge of her belt she gave a kind smile, “good afternoon, Mr?”

“Uh names Blake. Blake  Pruitt.”

“Well Mr. Pruitt, I’m detective Di Salvo with the NYPD. I just wanted to ask you a few questions about last night.”

“Uh yeah. Sure.” She slipped her badge back onto her waist as she met his eyes the smile no longer on her face. “Where were you between nine pm and six am this morning?”

“I was at work until about eleven, then I came home.”

“And where is it you work?”

Blake crossed his arms as he leaned against the door. Lilith took notice of his change in body language as she waited for his answer. “I work down at the liquor store, one block over.”

“Would they be able to confirm you were there until eleven?” He scrunched his eyebrows as he scoffed, “yes. They have cameras set up inside the store. Listen lady are you insinuating something?”

“I’m not insinuating anything at all Mr. Pruitt. I’m just asking the standard questions here.” Sighing he ran a hand over his face, “I’m going to assume your next question is going to be if I heard or saw anything last night.”

Lilith nodded, “you would be correct. Any small detail you remember would be greatly appreciated.”

“Honestly, I was sat in front of my tv most of the night. I did hear what I thought sounded like a scream, but it didn’t really register in my mind that someone was in trouble.” Nodding she reached to grab her wallet from her jacket pulling a card from it. “Thank you for your cooperation. If anything, else happens to come to mind please give me a call.”

“Yeah, I will detective.” Taking the card, Blake stepped back closing the door. Sighing Lilith ran a hand over her face, this was going to be a long afternoon.

Hello! I’ve been utterly sick the past four days and I have had ideas running through my mind like crazy. This is one of them that I decided to bring to life. I figured since I had a modern AU for Fili, I’d do one for Richard Armitage. I know it seems kind of lack luster, but it will pick up I promise! I’m excited to be writing this one! Thank you for reading!
