My Top 10 Music Countdown - #7: The Beatles

The Beatles have been written about and documented so much that I’m not sure I can add anything about the band itself that hasn’t already been said a hundred times before - about their innovation, their gigantic influence on popular music as we know it, etc… but, as far as what I personally love about them: the Beatles themselves are fascinating, George Harrison is easily my favorite. Also, I admire their huge range of musical styles - I find it weird when someone says they don’t like the Beatles, because they seriously have something for everyone. Dreamy romantic songs, angry and loud songs, funny songs about weird characters, completely bizarre and psychedelic songs that transport you to another dimension…you name it, and there’s a Beatles song for that!

Their songs have layers and layers of elements to enjoy, and I seem to always notice something new every time I listen, whether it’s in the lyrics or the musicianship and production. If I was asked who I think is the greatest band of all time, I wouldn’t give it a second thought - it’s the Beatles! The only reason they aren’t higher on my list is because my ranking for this drawing challenge is more about what the artists personally mean to me, more so than which band is more…“legendary”, I guess? I wish I’d grown up with the Beatles, but I didn’t begin to appreciate them until about the time I started college - ever since then though, I’ve absolutely loved them.

My favorite songs, though it’s really hard to choose just a few: While my Guitar Gently Weeps, the Medley from “Abbey Road”, Hey Jude, And I Love Her, Strawberry Fields Forever, Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, Something, Here Comes the Sun.

Working on the next band in my top 10 countdown. Who’s this famous bassist?

Music is very important to me and I believe that different bands at different times of my life have helped define who I am, have inspired me creatively, and have created some of my favorite memories. The least I can do is dedicate a drawing to my top 10 favorite bands & artists!

Starting the countdown -  #10. Green Day: Honestly I don’t think I do so well as a self-proclaimed Green Day fan. If you ask me to name any of their songs from the past 10 years, I couldn’t tell you. But there’s something very, very special about the album “American Idiot” - that CD stands in its own place in time on my life narrative. Hearing it for the first time was so impactful that I remember exactly where I was, and when. It shook me - I was 12 years old, had previously only known my parents’ music and Disney CDs, and had never heard something so loud and fast, and powerful (and full of cuss words) as this wonderful album. I immediately knew I needed to have this CD, so I convinced a school friend to get it for me for Christmas and I kept my secret treasure hidden in my room where I would listen to it every. single. day. I loved the narrative style of the album, which had characters and some kind of plot that I don’t think I ever fully understood, but I would interpret it in my own way. Not to mention, the music got me thinking politically for the first time in my young life. For all these reasons, Green Day takes the number 10 spot on my countdown.

My favorite songs: American Idiot, Holiday, Jesus of Suburbia, St. Jimmy
