I wanted to do Tuxedo Mask because he’s a classic anime character from a classic series that so many cosplayers have dressed up from - a tradition basically. He was someone I wanted to do for years, but other projects got in the way. However, I’ve been collecting materials for about a year. I don’t know what happened, but a few days before the con, I decided to completely make him.
Besides the compliments and fangirl/boy looks I’ve received, the majority of the responses are related to the cape. I have a love for capes, and I make all of my capes drape and extremely large. I tend to make them drag on the ground because it makes me feel fabulous. It was a lot of “YAS QUEEN!” and “Holy ****! He looks beautifully fabulous!” And a lot of cape twirls!
I made part of the costume from scratch; everything but the pants, shirt, and mask. The mask is a crystal mask I bought from New Orleans; the moment I could not resist because it matched my design for him so well. The heavy cape is a full circle, and the tailcoat is made from the same brocade material.
I’m a natural introvert with the lack of social skills and confidence, even to this day. Cosplaying is one of the reasons why I’ve become much more social than ever. In costume, I become the most confident person ever. Cosplay has increased all of my skills with art, math, and all the related topics. Because of cosplay, I developed everlasting relationships with other cosplayers, including well-known ones - I’m sure they did it the same way too. I made so many friends all over the world, including those close to me because of the confidence I’ve built from cosplaying. I have my own costuming business where I make costumes for clients and rent costumes out to others. With my business, I’ve created happiness for others when they cosplay. So much of my life achievements stem from cosplay, too many to list, but it has brought me happiness. I was the quiet timid boy. Now I’m still the same boy but with much more!
So many people have told me that one day, they hope to have to same skill level as I do when it comes to costuming. I have to say the same thing for me with other cosplayers. You WILL be better, you just have to work on it. Don’t push yourself too hard; start small. Most importantly, have fun. Don’t do it because you have to be the best or you want to be famous. No, don’t ever do it for any of that, don’t ever. Do it for fun. If you can’t make a costume, buy one. If yours is falling apart a little bit, that’s okay. If you don’t even want to cosplay and rather wear a kigu, do it! Just have fun doing it. With this, your life will change. You will meet people who will be your family and maybe the love of your life. This is a community of happiness and kindness, pass it on.
