“Saint Cecilia (Latin:Sancta Caecilia) was a Roman martyr venerated in Catholic, Orthodox, Anglican, and some Lutheran churches, such as the Church of Sweden. She became the patroness of music and musicians, it being written that, as the musicians played at her wedding, Cecilia “sang in her heart to the Lord”. Musical compositions are dedicated to her, and her feast, on 22 November, is the occasion of concerts and musical festivals.” (Source)

Ariadne (1898), by J.W. Waterhouse

Another painting based on the 21 letters from Ovidius, collectively known under the name Heroides.  The story of Ariadne is most renowned from her helping her beloved Theseus to kill the Minotaur and escape out of the labyrinth that her father had built. She did this by giving him a ball of thread so that he could find his way back.  Here she is shown sleeping on a bench, while her lover is leaving her behind and sails away.  The two panthers represent the god Dionysus who seduces her and makes her his wife.

In the Vatican Museum, there is a marble Hellenistic sculpture showing Ariadne in almost the same pose as on this painting. Waterhouse must have used it as a model. There are also obvious resemblances with the painting of Saint Cecilia (1895): the ship in the background, the balustrade separation and the sleeping woman to name just a few.  In 1895, there was a large exhibition of Venetian art in London and its effect on his paintings is undeniable.  Waterhouse becomes more and more influenced by the paintings of Botticelli and other works from the Italian Renaissance.

Saint Cecilia (1895), by J.W. Waterhouse

The fascination that Waterhouse had with women in poetry, persisted in this painting of Saint Cecilia.  The scene is based on the following strophe:

“In a clear walled city on the sea, Near gilded organ pipes … slept Saint Cecily.”

It originates from Tennyson’s poem “The Palace of Art” (first published in 1832, revised in 1842).

The beautifully illustrated songbook on her lap, the scenery with many flowers and the two angels appearing in her sleep, create a very romantic and peaceful atmosphere.  This, together with the extensive use of bright colours, makes it very much a Pre-Raphaelite painting.  It was bought by Andrew Lloyd Webber in 2008.

The Christian concept of sainthood is a person who is particularly holy, and shares a special closeness with God due to their actions in life. Each saint is associated with one or several patronages. If you are so inclined, you may want to try working with saints in magic, whether it be directly appealing to them or using their associations symbolically in spells.

This post focuses on Saint Cecilia. Saint Cecilia had vowed her virginity to God, but was arranged to be married by her parents. It is said that while musicians at her wedding played music, Cecilia drew away and was instead focused on singing to God in her heart, giving her an association with music.
