Gouache/Water color sketching! Here is a glimpse into another process for creating bold images using
gouache! In this demo I am starting as a traditional watercolor, leaving the white of the board for the highest
luminance within the image- namely the sun light breaking through the clouds. But then I switch into more opaque mixtures as the painting is built up. If you work transparent to opaque, it’s really important not to cover up all the wonderful happy accidents from those first washes of color! Otherwise what was the point? Reflected and bounced light should be similar values to the original washes for those respective areas, but you can now introduce more subtle color notes within the shadows. As usual, I reserve the high-lites for the end. In this case, the vintage GP9 diesel locomotive. As a 6 year kid I spent a lot of time at my dads wood shop, located off the west runway at the Burbank Airport (1974).I’d watch this exact engine roll past my fathers shop, which always inspired drawings to follow. I guess they really made an impression on me to this day!

I worked on Umbrella Academy from Netflix back in 2018 with PD Mark Worthington. Mark and I first connected for STD for CBS and he invited me onto this amazing series to help design the sets. Since Mark is a master Draftsman, he loves art done on paper! Again, this type of opportunity does not come along very often in Live action, so I jumped at it! The real pull for me was the chance to collaborate once again with Mark- who is one of the finest
people I have had the great fortune to meet and now call my friend! I have a bunch of work so this will be part 1.

The assignment of creating shots for COTW, in the style of Eyvind Earle has to start somewhere! It was a big assignment. Our Director, @chrissandersart is such a vet of animation in coming up with an amazing way to quickly color design the entire film with just one painting!!! WHAAA?! How do you do that I thought! He only asked me to paint one stylized Earle tree, with Buck next to it… but then change the color/lighting/time of day/mood at least 25 times! Genius! Every light was accounted for- key and fills/bounce and all I had to do was change out layers. Now this is only easy if you know how light works, have done the pain staking hours outside and for film while learning how to modulate color tempearature/hue/key/design. Thankfully, again, I was ready to jump in and try this idea out- I would use this assignment again in a heart beat- Literally you could then apply any color scheme to any shot from the film.

Live action doesn’t rely on these because the world is already done, and thus just needs to be lit. But in animation, the careful design of color from shot to shot is essential. I was able to offer a pass for the fight between Buck and Spitz during an aurora borealis! Using the backdrop allowed us to change color based purely on emotional reasons much as Disney’s classic film “Bambi” did! Well it’s been more than a year since I posted anything! Thanks to anyone who has not ditched my page during this long pause. I’ll start sharing some industry work from recent years. The first up today is COTW with the amazing @chrissandersart! Chris wanted to inspire the VFX team with stylistic design inspired by the great Eyvind Earle. I got the call and jumped at the chance- painting for several months. I had a fantastic time and the crew of artists became some of my best friends! The video shows last week’s Homework- using the Richard Schmid color chart system of mixing one color into every other color I asked the class to give 2 alts for each color harmony that results from each cross mixture. Each student did 24 frames- I think the class total thus far is close to 4K frames produced by 17 amazing students! The still shots feature a couple of weeks work collected for an upcoming ACCD display.

We had amazing overcast light here in LA, which is becoming more rare, so I wanted to demonstrate how to build color chain harmonies and notan value patterns. I took this pretty far for a demo but I think it helped the students see the possibilities of finding sensitive color on an otherwise gray day.
