@savingthesurvivors founder Dr. Johan and team in South Africa were called to help a desperate reserve owner who had lost 4 Rhinos in one night in a brutal poaching attack!

Many reserve owners in South Africa are feeling immense financial pressure after covid has seen their main income from tourism practically disappear over the past 2 years. By far the biggest expense for these custodians of our wildlife is the security and measures needed to keep the most endangered species safe.

This is where, with your support, our teams can provide life saving assistance. We are able to support these wildlife caretakers with our veterinary services for free, in this case, in collaboration with the @councilofcontributors and helicopter pilot Gerry McDonald, we were able to fly in, trim the horns, take DNA and blood samples and microchip all the Rhinos that remained on the reserve. Undoubtably making them less of a target for the poachers that were feared to still be in the area.

The Reserve owner said - “I stand here with tears in my eyes because of your generosity – we didn’t see how we were going to get this done.” “It’s very lonely being a private rhino owner. Until now, we didn’t have any support, we didn’t know anyone we could call who cares the way we do.”

@savingthesurvivors team are so excited to share with you that their search for the Northern White Rhino, which is thought to be functionally extinct, will be aired on BBC2 this Friday!

With the death of the last captive male, Sudan, the northern white rhinoceros was officially declared extinct in 2018. But in recent years, possible sightings from a remote region in the heart of Africa have given conservationists hope. Could this charismatic animal get a miraculous second chance?

This film follows a dedicated international team of experts on an expedition to war-torn South Sudan in search of the northern white rhinoceros. An animal native to this unexplored and dangerous region in Africa, the team is taking a huge risk to realise the dream that a lost population of these incredible beasts still exist.

The team comprise of Paul Naden, expedition leader & CEO of rhino rescue charity Saving the Survivors (STS), Vianet Djenguet, a highly skilled Congolese wildlife camera operator, Dr. Johan Marais the world-leading rhinoceros veterinarian & founder of Saving The Survivors, and Aldo Kane, a high security expert & former royal marine.

South Sudan has suffered the longest civil war in Africa’s history. There is no developed road system, no power grid or phone networks, and no internet. There have been very limited wildlife surveys done in the last decades, and no film crew has been allowed to film in the country for years. But the crew will to do whatever it takes to find hope for the existence of this sub-species.

The dedicated team experience the highs and lows of expedition life in this vast country. A wonderful and wild place, they meet with indigenous Dinka tribes, deploy search technology and throw everything they can at the search against all its odds - until the expedition is turned upside down due to events that shock the world.
