In mid December of 2019 I was approached via an email to see if I was interested in a job that hadn’t been approved yet, was in the early stages of being pitched, and probably wouldn’t happen. I got my hopes entirely up and agreed. On the 8th of January (my birthday), I found out that the job was indeed going ahead, and what a bloody gift that was. It’s been incredibly difficult to keep my mouth shut and not show anyone what I was doing for the first third of this mad year, but now it’s finally real.
Enormous thanks to Art Director, Sheri Gee (and for the beautiful typography); everyone working with Sheri at Folio Society; the licensing team; Steve Brusatte for being my palaeontologist consultant; Heather for being ignored / bored by my quotes and “fun facts” for months, and anyone else involved in the process of creating this. This. This beautiful, this official, this illustrated republishing of the 1990 Michael Crichton novel, Jurassic Park. Complete with textured slipcase and soft-touch laminated cover with a textured spot varnish.

Netrunner has a need for lots of different types of art - cyberspace stuff, and characters of course, but also machines, scenes and more abstract elements that make the flow of the game what it is - for illustrating corporate plots or runner schemes it isn’t always something flash that’s needed. What netrunner has always done well though was is getting serviceably good art to match the more abstract or less “typically cyberpunk” events.

Michael Whelan - Smiler
IllustratorMichael Whelan is one of the most important science fiction illustrators of our time, having been the first living artist inducted in the Sci-Fi Hall of Fame in 2009.
“I just think about things that seem eerie, or recall frightening situations from my own experiences then adapt them to the exigencies of illustration. I don’t go for blood and gore; that’s about creating revulsion, not fear. I’m inclined towards establishing a situation that provokes more of a feeling of unease than anything else. It’s really very hard to actually create a sense of fear in an image alone. We, as viewers, are so accustomed to hearing soundtracks with scary noises and music to trigger a ‘fear’ mood that to do it with an image alone seems almost impossible in these jaded times.” - Michael Whelan
