“Take it outside“ - Did bunch of fun spot illustrations for LA Times FOOD section. Tight deadline - had 3 days with budget of $500. Usually the cover budget itself is $500 but instead of putting full effort into single colored cover, AD wanted multiple simple black & white line drawings floating around. It was fun coming up with silly idea together. It’s rare to talk to AD over the phone but this time, talking was faster so we discussed over the phone. I’m little disappointed that I couldn’t use my favorite - cat chef idea but oh well maybe next time XD Thank you AD Steve Banks !

Quick one for Firewords Magazine (https://firewords.co.uk/twelve). My illo was in response to a great short story, by Ashley Hothersall, about a young girl who falls out with a black widow spider.

“Hours later, after sunset, she laid in bed, her blanket tightly wrapped around her. […] In her softly lit bedroom, the girl stared listlessly at the abandoned web. Only now could she see it for what it truly was; a trap”

Death and the Handmaiden 11x17 pen and ink on Bristol Board. Digitally painted in Photoshop.

My apologies. This isn’t the time for subtlety.

This woman is prepared to do real damage.

She’ll have a hand in dismantling to Affordable Care Act.

If the election is contested she’ll be the one to throw the election for Trump.

Along with Judges Thomas and Alito she will assuredly nullify legal Gay marriage.

Black people and people of color won’t be safe either. Hard fought civil rights will be under  renewed attack.

And as someone who won’t even acknowledge the reality of climate change, she’ll vote against the survival of the planet but for corporations who pollute and contribute to the climate crisis.

Want to mitigate some of the damage?

VOTE. Vote for a DEFINITIVE UNCONTESTED BIDEN WIN.

And once he’s won? Apply pressure on day one. Democrats have no choice but to increase the number of progressive judges to the Supreme court to mitigate the damage this woman is prepared to do.

VOTE.

Black Lives Matter. Arrest cops that murder Black and Brown lives. Defund the police. Reinvest those funds into communities most affected by bad policing. Periodt.

For the record I absolutely LOVE Kadir Nelson.
But why do I feel like he’s the only go-to Black cover artist The New Yorker hires? I know that’s not true, it just feels that way.

So okay universe… I’m speaking this into existence!

Imagine over 700,000 jobs being lost to Covid-19. Imagine, as a result over 9 million people losing their health insurance.

In the middle of an pandemic.

Now imagine 9 million people demanding medicare for all. Not in a put yourself at risk of the virus protesting in the streets kind of way. No, something a bit more civilized.

Imagine Americans using social media as a tool. As a way to amplify their voices. Everyone now uninsured on FaceBook, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, Twitch, Snapchat, Whatsapp, YouTube, TikTok demanding MEDICARE 4 ALL? Not once. But over and over and over and over again. Not for a single day. Not for a week. But months.

What kind of effect would your collective voices have? Imagine finding out.

Imagine doing this as if your life depended on it. And if you’re Black or Latino? Imagine doing this because your life REALLY depended on it.

Because it does.
