God I forgot to post the follow-up to the Banquod one too, this was from clear back in August lmao – not much further than the first wip posted here, but had the other bits we worked on from stream included this time.

This version is actually from almost a year ago/Feb 2021 - Still chipping away at it every so often, but the past while’s been busy & this has taken a lot of planning/noodling on paper you can’t see here (the next section has some HEAVY action choreo lmao).

Some boards for a training montage I did in Alan Wan’s Cinematic Storytelling class! We worked from a TMNT script and used Panty & Stocking character designs. Had so much fun with it.
In a galaxy where lineage and looks are the most valued currency, there is but one catch: Virtual images can’t be trusted, so rich and powerful Lords across the galaxy commission painters to portray their offspring, in order for them to get married. These realistic nude paintings are kept safe in an Art Gallery, where appraisers from all over gather and see who’s the most perfect specimen to please their clients.
A little trip down memory lane. This is a small fight sequence I story boarded between Su and Kuvira. It’s short but packs a punch. Love the backstory here between these two as it added a ton to the stakes of this battle. I must admit I do miss staging these fights. Joaquim Dos Santos has left a long trail of incredible and memorable action scenes in his wake, and it would be tough to say which one was his “best,” or even which one is my favorite. But if I had to try, this fight would easily be up there near the top of that list. The dynamics, timing, flow, and clarity of this sequence are all top-notch. It’s no mystery that when Mike and I got the opportunity to make Korra, the first person we turned to was Joaquim.

I wasn’t born in the 80s but I was raised on Spielberg, John Hughes, Devo, the Cars, and Duran Duran. I think I have good a good handle on the source material.
Despite that, I did do my share of research for making Elwood’s room look like an authentic 80s boy’s bedroom. That meant looking up screencaps of kid’s bedrooms from E.T., Close Encounters, Adventures in Babysitting, The Goonies, and the opening of Princess Bride (That kid’s room is packed with great material!). Not to mention the crazy research on 80s toys using forums and ebay (You won’t believe how much people are selling those things for!)
So yea, blah blah blah I did the research.
BUT the most exciting part about designing this room was how much of myselfI put in this thing. When I was a kid born in 91, I never had all the cool crap that kids in the movies had. I mostly had cheap 99 cent knockoffs and a few lucky finds from Goodwill. The spirit of this piece involved harnessing my inner kid to discover what Elwood and I would have in our dream room. We both share an interest in sci-fi, music, junk food, and airplanes. I’d imagine we’d both have the same room upkeep.
So here’s to bringing out your inner child and letting him or her inspire your work. *raises imaginary glass of rootbeer*
Francis is as hip as hip can be. He’s Elwood’s best bro for life. The two bonded over music and would marathon through Twilight Zone re-runs on the tele after school. His favorite thing in the world is his walkman and Michael Jackson’s Thriller.
If I where to cast him, I’d most definitely choose Caleb McLaughlin, also from Stranger Things.
It starts with a simple idea with a bunch of scribbles. A boy, his older brother, and his best friend meet a mystical creature in the woods.
And then it takes a little self reflection. What was it like roaming the woods with a youthful mind overflowing imagination and a heart glowing with wonder? What experiences can I draw from my own boyhood (which feels like many years ago) that can inspire their journey?
And most important of all: What do I want you to feel?

I got to help out a bit on Monkie Kid season 2! Getting to do some super goofy anime boards was a bright spot in the dark that was the summer of 2020.
