This weeks very late book of the week is Bryan Lee O'malley’s Lost at Sea.

It is a great book that lingers in the back of your mind like a pain you didnt know you had, but somehow you miss.

It was a great lecture, and it has so many Cats…

This is one of those movies that I was primed to love: video games, a love story, amazing visuals, music I liked, interesting and quirky characters, etc.  But right off that bat Scott Pilgrim comes off as a huge d-bag and he never really improves.  Chasing after a girl and getting together with her before breaking things off with your current girlfriend is grade A dick behavior.

For every amazing set piece, battle, and charismatic character, there was still the return to what a spineless wanker Scott is like a dark cloud over the whole movie.  I like watching him fight the evil exes but I am never convinced that it serves any purpose because Ramona doesn’t seem like a person to him any more than Scott’s own ex Knives does.  Scott’s selfishness makes it near impossible to really root for him, in my book, but the exes aren’t exactly great either so it’s a wash.

In the comic, Scott comes to the realization that he has been a shitty boyfriend and is no better than any other “evil-ex”, but in the movie he doesn’t quite get that same moment of self-realization.  Honestly, it’s too little too late for Scott, which is too bad because otherwise this movie is superlative.
