Headcanon: when Snape isn’t wearing his full robes with the travelling cloak, it’s when he’s feeling the most confident. He often feels exposed without the billowing fabric covering him up and obscuring your view of his body. When you see him in his frock coat without the cloak, be prepared for peak Snape sarcasm and wit, more elaborate body language, and an almost permanent smirk, the confidence just oozing from him.
I think that is what they might’ve done in some of the films. The duel with Lockhart is a moment that immediately comes to my mind.

Also this is one of the only times he’s not in his cape when he’s in front of the students. Sev must’ve been feeling pretty sure of himself that day. He knew was going knock Lockhart on his ass in front of the students.

Somewhere around your third year you started crushing on Snape
It started off as something small
You began talking in class more
You were almost as bad as Hermione when it came to answering questions
Anything that would get his attention drawn to you, you did
You even started staying after class to help him clean up
Snape grew feelings for your seventh year
He wouldn’t ever act on it
But he started keeping you after class to talk to you more
Even though you already stayed without him asking he felt better to ask
He even went as far as to ask you to help him in his classroom over the weekends
He started getting jealous whenever Ron would talk to you in class
It was no secret the redhead had a crush on you
But Snape didn’t know you liked him just yet

That soon changed when you seemed unable to contain yourself any longer
You’d thought about it the entire day
You knew it was a bad idea
Surely students and teachers weren’t allowed to be together
But that didn’t stop you
That day after class you surprised Snape by kissing him
He surprised you even more by pushing you back into the desk behind you and kissing you like there was no tomorrow
If it weren’t for the table your knees would’ve buckled under you
You continued doing this everyday in secret
You were just counting the days until you graduated
Knowing you’d finally be able to be with each other in the open

Snape has a cauldron shaped coffee mug with “ #1 potions master” on it. He only uses it in the privacy of his chambers and office in the dungeons or at Spinner’s End to avoid anyone seeing it. He has a reputation to keep after all. It was gifted to him by one of his former students earlier in his teaching career.
It’s one of the few possessions he’s sentimental about, especially in a positive way. It’s serves as a reminder that a least a few students don’t despise him and even enjoy his classes.
