Growing beans, cucumbers and fruit all in 15 gallon containers.

Pepper and peach tree.

The little peach tree is so full of ripening peaches it is leaning over. It’s just a couple seasons since I grafted the rootstock.

The purple Peruvian pepper plant is on its third season and still profusely producing purple peppers.

Green beans from the garden. So tasty.

These also were grown in a container shared with a fruit tree.

First cucumbers! I grew these in a 15 gallon container shared with a peach tree.

Wet weather today. Plants are happy.

Planted tomatoes today. We are having unusually wet weather here in California in May, so I thought it might be good to take advantage of the ripe planting conditions and set these tomatoes out.

I planted them deep as I usually do with tomatoes. I squeezed one tomato in between two large artichokes. Time will tell if it has enough space and light.

Since I’m so limited in planting space, I expanded the bed. Two tomatoes have brand new soil to enjoy. The fourth tomato will grow out as a container plant. Let’s see which planting does the best. My money is on the container planted tomato!

We rent a converted garage behind this main house. We have 400 square feet, a small garden under a pear tree and a dozen or so potted up fruit trees. Love our little place, little garden and little trees.

Happy with the grafting success this season: on the peach 3 out of 4 grafts took and on the apples even more success. One of this year’s apple grafts (Waltana) actually has fruit growing on it!

The last photo shows one of the apple trees coming into fruit for the first time (Pink Lady).

Garden beds full of various things. In these photos you will find: kale, walking onions, green onions, chives, beats, lettuce, arugula, cucumbers, tomatoes, basil, cilantro, parsley, peppers, marigolds, and green beans.

Fruit trees are fruiting!

All these trees I’ve grafted or rooted myself, starting with bare rootstock or a cutting. Many of these trees I’ve put on multiple varieties. Some have more than half a dozen or more different varieties on one tree!

Since we don’t own land, we grow our trees in containers. They all started out in 1 gallon pots and now most are in 15 gallon containers. I don’t plan on potting up further but we are hopeful we will plant many of these trees in the ground when we buy a place soon.

We’ve got apple, Asian pear, plum, nectarine, peach, grapefruit, mandarin, pineapple guava, fig, pomegranate and more.

No fruit yet on the cherry or European Pear trees. Maybe next year!

Planted kale out in a shady party of the garden next to the lettuce patch. I started the kale from seed indoors and potted up a couple times. They should be happy in their final home.

The bees are loving the poppies right now!

Lots of different things becoming ready for harvest. We have beds of lettuce, arugula and kale at varying stages. Another wave of fava beans is upon us and following that we will have pole and bush beans. Meanwhile peppers and tomatoes are growing.

Standing by we have kale, cilantro and beat starts to be planted as soon as room is available.

Yesterday I started more beats and turnips indoors for a later summer planting.

Continually sow seeds and start plants indoors so your harvest can continue without interruption.

Just some photos of the different areas and styles of my garden.

We have some beds where we are growing directly in the ground.

We have a lot of 15 gallon containers where fruit trees share the space with fava beans or other small vegetables.

And we have smaller 5 gallon containers where we are growing peppers, strawberries and snow peas.
