A Minimalist Fine Press Friday

This week we present a fine-press pamphlet by a poet and an artist noted for their spare compositions. British artist and filmmaker John Christie uses minimalist silk-screened squares to illustrate Scottish poet and physician Gael Turnbull‘s equally sparse poem Nine Intersections, printed in 1982 by Christie at Ron King’s Circle Press in Guildford, England in an edition of 70 copies signed by the poet and artist. This is one of 14 publications Christie printed for Circle Press. Despite its minimalism, or perhaps because of it, the pacing, movement, and rhythm of this little book is wonderfully satisfying.

New project I made with Kaori!

“Spirit chimeras” silkscreen print on a natural dyed cotton, an exhibition piece in collaboration with Kaori Pie for Grafische werkplaats, the Hague.

We are all different yet we share some similarities. We try to fit into certain groups but tend to differ from others. We try to place our differences and similarities into categories like ethnicity, upbringing, race or gender. To emphasise how different and yet how similar we all are, we created a universe of chimeras that all share certain body parts or patterns as well as have their own unique parts. They exist together and seem wildly different while still sharing something with one another.

We are moving towards a society that is mixing influences and more and more, cultures are being intertwined and translated into other expressions. As we are reborn into new lives with different societal and cultural constructs, we can’t help but be influenced or inspired by what we see in other people from around the wold. Passion and the spirit in the human mind find these connections that draw us to each other to learn and to feel engaged in a broader mission than to find reasons to divide us into our differences.

Here is the world where our creatures live, with their powers both shared as well as expressed in a different way.

Yesterday I tried silkscreen printing for the first time and fell in love! I can’t wait to use this technique for my future projects. Here are some photos from a two days learning process at Grafishce werkplaats.

This is my first sketch of the artwork. I’m working on some mama/baby related project and wanted to print these elephants as part of it. I tried to keep the design as simple as possible since it was my first silkscreen printing experience ever.

Here is the final digital version, ready to be printed in black as separate layers (part of the preparation process I didn’t know about).

Choosing my colours

Screens!

this is how my design looked on the screen when I was printing the blue layer.

First layer!

And here it is ready! Thinking of sending some of them as presents to friends :)

Grafische werkplaats is closed for summer Holidays now, so I will have to wait a bit until my next screen printing session.
