I turned in art for my first picture book yesterday (ahhh!!!), and I’m still feeling spaced out, coming off that disoriented post-exam feeling of anxiety and anticipating the months ahead before being able to see how it all turned out.

The Middle Passage: White Ships | Black Cargo is unlike any picture book I’ve ever encountered. There are stories that tell the horrors of slavery after they had reached their destination, but I can’t think of any others that tell the story of the journey. There are a few pages of commentary from the author, and an introduction—but the story itself is told solely with illustrations, and honestly, I can’t see that words would have added anything to the story. Each illustration conveys the horror, pain, and struggle that African men and women experienced during the Middle Passage. This book is one that can be used alongside various history lessons to help gain a deeper understanding of what this experience was actually like. It can also be used to help readers think critically about certain aspects of history they were taught that sugar coated or glossed over the horrors of the slave trade.

These were the best kinds of picture books ever. If I still had any of these, I could space out for hours staring at the pages.
A first concept that came to mind when thinking of this scene of the short film Rest in Peace. The governor trying to comfort and how the film could look. We were thinking more like a picture book vibe.

Based on the well-known and evocative legend of the inseparable lovebird Biyi of China, this comic book derived from the background of the game. It tells the story of the Emperor Li Longji and Concubine Yang, who transformed into a pair of souls and travelled through ancient times, guiding villagers to fly over the gorges of a remote village in Yunnan to find the long-lost oasis of modern people.

I’m very excited about the fall season. One of my favorite memories as a child was watching the film, ‘Beatrix Potter- The World of Peter Rabbit and Friends’ and for some reason, I’ve always identified it with spring and fall. Do you have any books you associate with fall? Here Peter Rabbit finds the Perfect Pumpkin for his mother.
