LIVE

When I remarked to Sinéad Cusack that it was going to be quite a week in her household, since not only is she opening as the lead of a Royal Shakespeare Company production but her husband Jeremy Irons will be seen starring in both “The French Lieutenant’s Woman” and “Brideshead Revisited”, it produced a rather unexpected reaction. Far from glowing or crowing over their joint good fortune, Miss Cusack pulled her knees up tightly under her chin and recoiled visibly while emitting a loud groan. “Oh God,” she said, burying her face in the mass of blonde hair, “don’t talk about that. What Jeremy and I have always tried desperately to avoid is to be placed together under the label of ‘The Lunts of Covent Garden.’ Our careers are quite separate and we have a pact only to mention each other veryglancingly.”

[…]And he thinks he would quite like to have another child. Sinéad, he says looking very pleased, has told him she’s willing. One of the nicest stories I’ve read about him concerns the birth of his second child, upon which he reportedly lit candles, put on Mozart and climbed into bed with Sinéad, Sam and the newly swaddled Max drinking Champagne toasts. This is such a nice story I don’t believe it, so I ask if it’s true. “I don’t think it was Mozart,” he says, adding that he distinctly remembers putting thedog on the bed.
