the screams & laugher of your grandchildren now filled your normally quiet home. as you fixed a plate of cookies & tea, you heard the pattering of little feet approaching.

“grandma!”

you turned your attention to the little monster below you. he was grabbing at your robes with puppy-dog eyes.

“what is it, dear?” you placed a hand on tio’s head.

“tell overlord sokka to play with me~”

you rolled your eyes, picked up the little boy, & made your way into the living room. your husband sat on the floor, entertaining your granddaughter with a handmade puppet.

“sokka,” you placed a hand on your hip; the other still holding up tio. “how many times have i told you to not make the kids call you ‘overlord’?”

“i have no idea what you’re talking about.”

“no, you did say th-“

just as your granddaughter was about to speak, sokka slapped a hand over her mouth. he gave a large apologetic smile. you could see his younger self underneath the wrinkles & freckles. his new sunburn from working in the garden gave him a slight pink glow.

the hand slapped over neena’s mouth was also speckled with sunspots. but it was just as strong as it was when you were younger. you always told him to slow down, but he never wanted to be a “fragile old man”.

sokka was still as handsome as he was when you met. & now the streak of white in his long wolftail added to that.

“mhm,” you hummed & placed tio on the floor.

“grandma! grandma!” neena pushed away from sokka & ran for you. “grandpa won’t tell us the story behind that picture!”

you followed her little finger to see which photo she was talking about. on the wall, a small portrait of aang & sokka hung. they looked to be about twenty, & as you stared, that day came back to you.

“oh, you wanna know about grandpa & avatar aang?” you smiled. before starting the story, though, you looked at your husband. you knew talking about aang hurt him, but he nodded, silently telling you to continue.

“well, i hadn’t met grandpa yet, but aang & your grandpa were friends since he was fourteen,” you said as you took a seat next to your grandkids. “& that day was aang’s birthday. the five of us — me, grandpa, aang, aunt katara, and toph — went out to celebrate. as a joke, your grandfather dressed up as an old man & handed aang his present. it was a little trinket from the southern water tribe; a reminder of how aang & katara met.”

“a little penguin,” sokka chimed in. he smiled but kept his eyes on the floor.

“so then he & aang just talked about their childhood for the rest of the night, ignoring the rest of us.” you chuckled & remembered how irritated toph had been.

“grandpa?” tio crawled across the rug to sokka & laid in his lap. “how’d you meet grandma?”

“oh, i dunno… grandma tells it better.”

“c’mon sokka, i already told a story. it’s your turn,” you teased.

“oh, fine.” he crossed his arms. “ahem. so, of course this was after we save the world.” he paused, as if he was waiting for an applause. “anyway, everything was getting back to normal. aang & katara got married & were now rubbing it in everyone’s faces. & toph — who was supposed to be my friend! — met some guy.

“so, i was wandering around in the fire nation, alone. i was trying to see zuko, but of course he was busy.” the irritation was still fresh in his voice, even though 40 years had passed. it made you smile.

“& i was just walking around the city & then your grandma runs right into me.”

“oh my goodness. i’m so sorry!” you exclaimed. “are you okay?”

“hey! watch where you’re goi-“ sokka stopped when he looked at you.

“what was i supposed to do?” your husband interrupted himself. “she was so pretty!”

“oh no… you’re sokka, from the southern water tribe. oh, i’m so so sorry! are you okay?” you held him by the shoulders & examined him.

“umm, y-yeah. i’m okay. are you okay?”

“yeah, i was just in a rush. i’m still so sorry!”

“it’s okay, really.”

“i couldn’t concentrate! i didn’t know what else to say!”

“you’re very pretty.”

“o-oh, thank you,” you smiled.

you thought for a moment before continuing.

“hey, i was about to go to a restaurant with my friends. do you wanna join me?”

“& that was that.” sokka sat up straight, proud of his storytelling skills.

“yep. the rest is history,” you smiled & got up.

you walked over to your husband & placed a kiss on his head. you two always joked about being that old couple who said things like “the rest is history” & who made their grandchildren gag.

this is exactly what you were hoping for when you asked sokka to join you for lunch all those years ago.

you had been walking through a small earth village with sokka & aang when you heard katara scream. you three were headed back to appa, with handfuls of food & supplies. katara had stayed back because she had been talking to an old woman about the horrible state of the village.

as soon as he heard the scream, aang dropped the things in his hands. a small box cracked open as it hit the dirt. you had never seen him run so fast.

sokka & you shared a look before you followed aang’s trail. as you ran you reminded yourself not to slip up.

“watch out!” sokka pulled you by the arm. while thinking, you almost ran straight into a tree stump. “you gotta be careful, y/n.”

you watched as he reached behind him, grabbing his trusty boomerang. the determination in his eyes inspired you. whenever you watched sokka fight, you felt a sense of pride. it made you want to get up & do something. that’s one thing you really appreciated about sokka, along with a million others.

“look!” sokka pointed to two firebenders who had surrounded aang & katara. katara’s attacks against the soldiers were pointless, & aang’s bursts of air only pushed them back a couple inches.

“hey!” you yelled, trying to grab their attention.

when they turned around, you realized how big they really were. they stood about a foot taller than you & sokka, & their muscles practically burst out of their armor.

the soldier on the left released a steam of fire directed at sokka’s feet. luckily, sokka noticed the man’s hand raise. he jumped just in time & proceeded to throw his boomerang. it spun past the man’s head, making him chuckle.

sokka stood taller & crossed his arms. a whipping sound grew louder & the soldier was knocked forward. his head fell low. his feet tripped over themselves & the man fell flat on his face.

“sokka never misses!” he yelled, pointing toward the fallen soldier.

you cut off sokka’s victory dance, “umm, we still have one more guy.” you pointed to the soldier on the right who had — midway through sokka’s boomerang throw — turned back to aang & katara.

“o-oh right. of course. i knew that.”

you got katara’s attention with a small whistle. you nodded to the man laying on the ground, motioning for her to switch.

katara twisted the water she currently held around the soldier, binding him from attacking. aang, however, blew him off his feet with a small gust of wind. with one subdued, you & sokka only had to take care one more.

“well, are you gonna attack or what?” sokka poked at the man, which made you shake your head. he’s way to confident in battles…

with that, the soldier lifted his hands & let a stream of fire out. you & sokka had to jump out of the way. while you two were still on the ground, the man lifted his leg, ready to kick flames toward sokka. sokka was to stunned to react, so you had to do something quick.

you can’t let it out, you told yourself. but as many times as you said that, it didn’t stick. sokka could not get hurt.

you leaped in front of sokka as the soldier pushed the fire out. you felt the heat approaching you, & your hands became sweaty. it’s been a while. instinctively, your arms lifted to shoulder-level. you extended your hands, as if you were reaching for the fire.

you heard sokka yell something, but you didn’t register it. you were focused on the ball of fire in front of you. as it neared, you adjusted your feet. your left slid a little to the right, & your right pointed forward.

a strand of hair came out of its place. you ignored it, keeping it out of your focus. you felt the flames envelop your hands. it evapored any sweat that beaded on your palms.

taking a deep breath in, you twisted your hands. you created a small sphere with you hands, controlling the fire. you spun it two times & redirected it to the ground on your right.

then, you blasted fire from your fist. because you had the element of surprise, the soldier had no time to react. you struck his helmet, pushing him backward. you watched his figure, seeing if he’d get back up. but remained in the dirt.

you smiled at your little victory. it had been a while since you last firebended, & it felt good. but this was short lived.

you turned around, hoping to celebrate this with your team. but when you saw their faces, there was only expressions of fear & surprise.

katara stepped behind aang, who furrowed his brow. sokka, who had now scrambled to his feet, looked beyond shocked. his jaw hung open.

“y-you’re a firebender…” katara’s voice was quiet behind aang’s shoulder.

“well-“

“why didn’t you tell us?” her voice got louder with each sentence.

“erm, well-“

“where you planning something?” aang spoke up. “are you really on our side?”

while katara’s voice became hostile, aang’s was full of sadness. your friends now thought you were a traitor.

“let me explain…”

katara scoffed & walked off. aang took a moment & then followed her.

“sokka… let me explain, please?”

“why did you lie to me?” he said this without looking at you. & then he slowly walked in the direction of his sister.

tears pooled in your eyes. this is what you were trying to avoid. you knew how the fire nation had treated all three of your friends, so you didn’t want to break the trust that had blossomed. they welcomed you wholeheartedly when you first met. they let you travel with them, letting you leave that awful fire nation base.

how were you going to change this?

about an hour later, you went to go find your friends. if you could even call them that now. you felt as though you should give them some time to process before chasing after them.

when you arrived where appa had landed, he was still laying there. momo was nestled on top of his head, but he rose when you approached.

this grabbed the gaang’s attention. katara & aang sat up in the saddle. they shot you a nasty glare. meanwhile, sokka leaned against appa’s side, seemingly taking a nap.

“can i please explain?” you shuffled your feet. “even if you don’t take me back… can i please explain?”

“how could you possibly expla-“

“wait, katara,” aang interrupted. “maybe we should hear her out.”

she huffed but ultimately agreed.

you began to explain your situation, of how you were thinking of them. you didn’t want to create mistrust, but you wanted them to not be afraid of you.

“how are you any better than the fire nation?” katara shot.

it hurt, but she was right. you hated how the fire nation lied, while you did the exact same thing.

“i’m so sorry, you guys. i truly am.”

“it’s okay, y/n,” aang hopped off the saddle & stood in front of you. “you had the best intentions at heart. you were trying to protect us.”

he waved katara over, encouraging her to forgive you. she walked to you & pulled you into a hug.

“you’re still my friend, no matter what.”

“thank you, katara.” you squeezed her harder.

the three of you looked over to sokka, who didn’t move.

“sokka?” you asked, walking over to him.

he popped one eye open, looking up at you.

he slowly got to his feet, still not making eye contact. you sighed. maybe the one person’s respect you wanted the most, you wouldn’t be able to get back. you had grown so attached to sokka over the past few weeks, it was hard for you to see your life without him.

suddenly, he grabbed you by the arms & pulled you into a deep hug. his arms wrapped around your neck & shoulders, your face was now pushed into his chest. startled, it took you a second to hug him back. it was so warm & comforting.

“this is our first hug,” you remarked, not knowing what to say.

“shush. i’m trying to hug you.”

“sokka… i’m sor-“

“i don’t care. just… next time you do something stupid like that, don’t wait so long to come back. i thought you had left.”

“ughhhhhhh.” the gaang let out a collective moan as appa shifted his weight to the left, causing turbulence.

“appa, what’s up buddy?” aang bent down from appa’s neck. he looks in appa’s eyes to see that tired had glazed over his pupils. “uh oh. guys!” aang turns back to you & the rest of the group. “we gotta make a pit stop. appa’s really~ tired.”

you & toph let out a sigh of relief. this had been the longest flight of this entire summer. plus, it had gotten cold that high up in the clouds.

“let’s go to a beach!” katara suggested, hoping to get some water bending practice in.

“no! we’ve gone to three beaches already in the past month! you do realize i can’t have fun when i don’t know where i am, right?” toph interjected.

sokka saw a frown on his sister’s face but chose toph’s side anyways: “toph’s right, katara. maybe we should go somewhere else.”

aang agreed & with that, appa flew down to a clearing in a secluded woods. it was still cold, but the grass & dirt below retained some heat. the grass was also soft & green as could be. the surrounding pine trees towered over, pine needles rattling in the breeze.

when appa landed, he dozed off immediately. toph & momo decided to make dirt castles, & aang & katara sat cross legged, talking about how nice the weather was.

just like it had been for the past two months, sokka followed you everywhere like a puppy. so he waited for you to do something before he did anything.

you touched your hair, wondering if it had been too long since you’d let it breath. since you didn’t have access to your regular hair accessories & treatments, you kept it up for the most part.

it was difficult to fight fire nation soldiers with your curls in your mouth.

when you took out your ponytail, your hair was slightly dented from the hair tie. you fluffed it up & shook your head from side to side.

“does it look good?” you faced sokka & motioned toward your head.

“y-y-yeah…” he was practically drooling over you. katara had always teased you about sokka & his “big fat crush on you” (as she put it). but him going crazy over you with your hair down only furthered that point.

as the day continued, things relaxed more than they already had. at one point, sokka sat in the grass & offered for you to do the same. wanting to make the boy blush, you laid down & placed your head in his lap.

like you planned, sokka blushed so hard you thought he’d explode.

as you settled into your new place, sokka started to play with your hair. at first it was just braiding & twirling, but then it was like you stepped into a spa. this man make you shiver. in fact, your goosebumps got goosebumps.

a few minutes later, you started to doze off. between sokka & the nice ambience, how could you not? it was beyond peaceful; it was just what the gaang needed.

when you woke up, sokka was looking over you, pushing curls behind your ears.

“hey there,” you said.

“man, your voice sounds tired,” sokka chuckled, swiping another curl from your face. “how’d you sleep?”

“really good.”

“good, i’m glad.”

his smile grew wider, which made your heart beat faster. maybe sokka wasn’t the only one with a crush…

as if he read your mind & knew what you wanted, sokka leaned down. his hand moved from your hair down to your cheeks. you hoped he didn’t feel how hot your they got.

when his lips met yours, it was totally different than any kiss you’d had before. he kissed you with such passion, it made you realize he was here all along. you could’ve kissed him ages ago. & you really really should have.

it’s never me, huh

sokka.

a man who tortured your entire existence just by breathing.

you two had grown up together in the southern water tribe. living only two huts down from him, you were able to maintain a close relationship.

but for you, it wasn’t close enough.

see, the thing was that you had a major crush on your best friend. like major. painstakingly so.

it started during the beginning of winter about four years ago. you both were still young & enjoying what little childhood you could have in the middle of a war.

after what had been a short summer, the ice began to thicken. & the first snow was approaching. the first was the only enjoyable for the tribe. both children & adults would go outside to witness it.

your mom had called out to you from the kitchen when the snow started to fall. when you heard the word “snow”, you rushed to grab your coat & shoved it over your dress & pants. you almost fell running out the door.

you told yourself you were running to sokka & katara, but you knew deep down you only wanted to see sokka & enjoy this with him. not to say you didn’t want to see katara, it’s just that you didn’t love her like you did her brother.

as you ran down the white speckled path, you saw your favorite person open their door.

“y/n!” called sokka. a wide smile spread across his face, making you stumble a little while running. “it’s snowing!”

“well duh,” katara pulled her jacket over her head as she walked out of the house.

when you made it to the pair, you huffed, enjoying seeing your breath puff up in a little cloud. you looked at your friends. you had noticed sokka’s hair was lit up by tiny snowflakes. the white in his hair made his eyes sparkle. this paired with his goofy smile just killedyou.

fast forward four years & nothing has changed.

sokka was still oblivious & laughing, while you merely stared after him.

you planned on telling him your feelings. you really did. but your fear got the better of you. what if this would ruin your friendship? what if he laughed at your confession? what if katara disapproved? there were too many variables.

but now you had a true reason to tell him.

you were on a sky bison, flying to the northern water tribe, with the avatar himself. you were literally on your way to fight a war! you just had to tell sokka. your lives were on the line.

the northern water tribe was just beautiful. it set the perfect scene for you. it was much more romantic than home. it’s pearly buildings towering over canals & lit pathways. & the sound of cracking glaciers was eery but comforting at the same time.

as the group walked through the city, you & sokka failed behind everyone. now was your chance!

“so sokka,” you began.

but he wasn’t listening. his eyes were on a nearby boat. you followed his gaze to a literal goddess. she was stunning. her white hair flowed through braids, her blue eyes were so bright you could see them from a mile away, & she stood with such an elegance that baffled you.

“she’s so pretty,” sokka drooled.

so maybe later, then.

but later didn’t happen, at least not in the northern water tribe. the girl on the boat, princess yue, stole your best friend’s heart. you watched as sokka sacrificed almost everything for her; he even fought her fiancé! & you just sat & watched.

it was heartbreaking when yue sacrificed herself for her tribe, but your heart shattered seeing sokka cry. you felt for him, you truly did. but your jealousy got the better of you. you practically cringed when sokka & yue shared their last kiss. you couldn’t bear to see that.

so you went on with being sokka’s best friend. nothing more.

but then an opportunity presented itself: the serpent’s pass.

the group volunteered to help a pregnant couple through the pass to bosing sei. a secluded, possibly dangerous mission with heartwarming undertones? what would be better than confessing your love then?

so you gathered your courage once more. this time it was your first evening on the trip. half of the group was asleep, while the rest watched the campfire. you & sokka sat on your sleeping bags, facing the cliffside.

“sokka…”

you turned towards him, the man who owned your heart. who you’d do anything for, even die for. the man who killed you everytime he smiled or laughed. who brought unlimitless joy to your life.

sokka turned away from the moon & sea, towards you.

instead of spewing the speech you had practiced for years, your body took over. you cupped his face, his cheek warming your cold hand. you then scooted towards him. you could feel his breath. he was here, right now, in front of you. all you wanted was in your grasp.

closing your eyes, you kissed him.

this is what you were waiting for all this time. it was like he let fireworks off inside you. you thought your heart was going to swell & explode. this overwhelming feeling caused you to smile so much it broke the kiss.

you opened your eyes, still smiling. & you were expecting a smile in return, but there wasn’t one.

sokka frowned & took your hand off his face. he huffed, looking back up at the moon. he started to stand.

“i’m sorry, y/n. i can’t do this right now.”

your heart broke. the pain resignated in your chest. your body reacted to this emotional turmoil as if it was a wound. you wanted to doubled over, start crying, yelling even. but you just shivered & silently wept. the tears only came one at a time, ever so slowly. regret & hurt circulated through you. it was unbearable.

how were you supposed to keep going after this?

will you do me the honor?

day three with no sleep.

you’d been counting the days since this new side adventure began. aang overheard a merchant spill about a once-in-a-lifetime meteor shower four days ago. the trip to the earth kingdom was long & arguous, so the everyone was excited for this distraction.

sure, sokka argued once in a while about timing, but after seeing how passionate the rest of the group was, he changed his tune. however, katara teased he only stopped badgering because you were the most excited out of all of your friends.

but seeing meteorites & talking about them are two different things. without the location or timing of the shower, this distraction soon became more stressful than the whole lord ozai ordeal.

each night, appa would land on a plateau or mountain, high above hindering clouds & tree lines. everyone kept their eyes peeled. you’d all sit in a circle, staring into different sections of the dark sky.

but nothing came.

“well, maybe it’s supposed to be tomorrow,” katara suggested each morning after a sleepless night.

so flash forward to day three. your eyes are bloodshot, & they hurt. aang & katara refuse to use their energy on bending. & poor sokka can barely walk, let alone say one understandable sentence.

on the verge of giving up, the gaang decided to rest in the lowlands of a nearby mountain range. it was mid-afternoon, so most of the group took light naps to gain some energy.

when you awoke a few hours later, the sun had already set. you panicked. what if you missed it? when was the next time you’d see a meteor shower?

you rose & tried to wake aang. he rolled over & muttered something garbled. poor baby.

you moved on to katara; you knew she wanted to see the shower badly. you shook & shook her, but it was no use. she was out of it.

then there was one: sokka.

it’s not that you didn’t want to be alone with sokka. you did. you really did. it’s just that you didn’t know how to be alone with him. it was always friendly between the two of you, but after a quickly shared kiss in the northern water tribe… your relationship seemed to be nothing but awkward.

there was so much unsaid. he still has that thing with suki… & did he even want to be with you like that? you two never made anything official.

but nevertheless, you weren’t going to deprive him of a potential good view. you turned away from his sister & sat next to him. he was curled up in his sleeping bag, snoring. & loud too.

you silently chuckled & moved a few strands of hair out of his face. he looked less crazy & energized when he was asleep. you traced the bridge of his nose with your finger, & then his jawline, & then his lips.

it wasn’t a bad kiss. not at all. it was actually kinda perfect. it happened before the gaang left the northern water tribe, when a straggling fire nation ship pulled up to the wall.

“i call dibs!” sokka yelled, as soon as he saw the red flag. when aang & katara gave him a look of concern, he replied, “cmon, i got this. don’t worry!”

he ran a little ways ahead, but then suddenly slowed his pace. he stopped, turned around, & made a beeline for you. because he was running, he basically crashed into you.

and before you could register what had happened, he grabbed your face & kissed you. it was soft & passionate & long overdue.

“i’ll be right back,” he said pulling away.

you had hoped he’d ask you out after dealing with the ship, but he never did. those feelings just merely lingered in confusion.

& so now you sat, outlining sokka’s face.

after realizing how weird this was, you decided just to wake him up. you were forced to do this multiple times before, so you were an expert.

you shook his shoulders, which caused him to stir. then you tickled him, making a loud laugh erupt. he immediately sat upright & begged you to stop.

you sat back admiring your triumph.

“not funny,” he said. he unzipped his sleeping bad & crawled out. “why’d you have to wake me up? it’s not even light out!” he gestured to the sky.

“well, i was going to give up on the whole meteor shower thing, but i have a good feeling about tonight.” you stood & offered your hand, which s sokka took hesitantly. “i couldnt wake the others, so it’s just us.”

you led sokka aways to a small opening in the wooded lowland. it was a perfect little circle. a few lightning bugs made way for you two. looking up, you noticed the tree line parted, allowing a good of the sky. you laid down on the grass, & sokka mimicked you.

it was silent for a couple of minutes. neither one of you knew what to say. you focused on a few constellations you recognized.

finally sokka spoke up.

“i wanna build a house.”

you laughed. “sokka, i think you need more sleep. you’re talking nonsense again.”

“no, i’m serious. i wanna build a house, maybe somewhere secluded. a little ways from town.” he didn’t look at you while he spoke, he kept his eyes on the sky above.

“okay?”

you followed a lone lightning bug across your line of view.

“&… & i want you to be there.”

what? what were you supposed to say? is he being serious?

when you didn’t respond, sokka kept going. “i wanna live with you in the house i’m gonna build. i- i want you there. a-and maybe after a while, there will be three or four mini-me’s & mini-you’s running around.”

“sokka…” you turned onto your side to face him. but he still refused to look at you. “you mean all that?”

it sounded perfect. more than perfect. a little life with sokka was all you wanted.

but what if this was a prank? was aang & katara hiding in the trees, waiting to jump out & say “ha! you thought!”?

or what if he was settling? suki wasn’t here, but you were. did he just miss her?

no, he’s not like that. is he?

the avoidance of eye contact made this worse. you couldn’t read his face. & you started to panic.

all you wanted was laying right in front of you. he was right there. it was all right there. in your grasp…

but you had your hand extended out fully. it was up to sokka to close this gap. would he quit talking & leave it to how it was? was this your fate with sokka? just meaningless conversations with underlying tension?

“of course i mean it!” he threw his whole body forward. he sat up & threw his arms up at the stars. and finally… finally he faced you. he stared right into you. and it almost seemed as if he was keeping himself from jumping to you.

“i’ve always meant it! i just didn’t know how to tell you.”

Part Sixteen

Seeing him in that ballroom was exhilarating, terrifying, and one of the best moments of her life.

image

Y/N had no idea where she was.

Well, of course she knew Ba Sing Se; she had grown up here with her mother in the palace. The more accurate statement would be she had no idea how she had gotten there. Casting her mind back, she scrambled for glimpses of her past, sorting them into order in a frantic fervour.

Suki – Appa – Suki again – a man – who was he?

And then she hit a figurative wall.

Something was blocking her memories of entering the Kingdom, and she was less than pleased. In fact, sneaking past the Dai Li and out of the upper ring was far easier than she could have ever hoped for. It seemed the Avatar and friends had caused quite the stir by barging their way into a prestigious social event, and they were likely playing a glorified clean-up crew. A bitter scoff escaped her lips as Y/N sprinted in the shadows cast along the street until she was at the first ring.

Panting, she braced herself for a moment. Things had really changed. Yes, the upper ring was always the nicest, richest part of the city, but the military trims of the hedges and the shine of the metal fencing reeked of facade. Even with most occupied with Bosco’s party, hardly a lantern was lit beyond those necessary.

She centred herself. Inhaling a deep breath, Y/N moved her energy into a flow of power. There was only one way for a firebender to get through that wall unseen, and it would be risky. With a final look on the bourgeoisie, Y/N pushed. Flames flickering a hot yellow at her hands and feet propelled her straight up like a firework ready to explode. The wind was merciless as it bit at her face in her haste, the cold nipping at her. Stumbling out of her flying, she toppled onto the walls top and took another quick moment.

The distance to the lower rings was far.

It had hit her whilst fleeing the palace that she had not seen a glimpse of her mother. There was no evidence of her existence, and piecing together the clues of a too-quaint suburb, secret police, and missing royal, Y/N figured she was only following in her mother’s footsteps.

Thousands of displaced refugees were living rough in the slums of the lower rings, and it was the perfect place to disappear. As the moon peeked through the thick smog of clouds choking the night sky, she felt some solace under its glow. It was no sun, the source of her power, but it reflected the same energy. It was not power, but comfort. That comfort brought calm, and the calm brought careful planning.

To propel herself all the way over the middle ring would be exhausting. Yes, she had the cover of night and the menacing clouds brewing a storm above, but could she make it all the way? She weighed her other options; going on foot was risky since she would be isolated and thus exposed. The rail line was constantly manned, not by the Dai Li, but someone who wouldn’t take too kindly to a teenage girl running along them like a race track. Giving the moon one final look as it slipped behind the darkness, Y/N made her decision.

She jumped.

Her fire carried her into the clouds and forwards. Agni, it was cold up there. Fighting through it, knowing a single shiver, a disruption to her chi, could send her hurtling down to the ground. What could she do but concentrate on what awaited her?

Mother would be so proud of her, how far she had come alone. If she could only find her in the ocean of people below, it would be a miracle. Freedom from Long Feng would be a reward in itself if finding her family wasn’t in the cards for her. How long had she played the puppet to his mind tricks? It left her stomach churning as she pushed that thought away. And Sokka.

Oh, Sokka.

Her fire faltered for a second, Y/N’s face falling into a panicked grimace as she forced for energy into her flight.

Somehow that boy had rescued her from the palace. It was strange to be true, but Y/N had felt almost submerged in the darkness of her own mind when he pulled her out. Seeing him in that ballroom was exhilarating, terrifying, and one of the best moments of her life. Spirits, she had missed him. Suki’s words swam through her head as she thought of him - go get our idiot; he’ll need you – and somehow, she had been right and wrong at the same time.

There was no doubt that Sokka would need her. Heck, the entire group probably suffered a little without her presence. However, thinking of his stubbornness and ability to walk head first into danger when sparse of a gentle guiding voice made her laugh. Moreover, there was something entirely else that Suki hadn’t gone over.

Y/N needed Sokka too.

Who would have known what would have become of her if it wasn’t for Sokka’s stubbornness saving her from Long Feng?

It seemed as though he’d rescued her again as Y/N saw the dividing wall between citizens and refugees coming up. Her body screamed, aching and grinding against her will, but they were so close now. Just thinking of him, anchoring her thoughts onto him, had pushed her through the pain of flight.

Lowering into the slums, her fire dwindling by the second, she fell into an empty street. The first thing she noticed was the smell. Now Y/N wasn’t one to judge, especially considering her privilege, but it was pungent in the cramped streets of the lower ring. Seeing how people lived here compared to what she had just witnessed was a startling and upsetting reality. It was made even more apparent by the silks she was still wearing melting into the environment with mud seeping into the hems.

“Your Highness?”

Y/N tensed. Following the voice, she saw a door open only slightly, a girl about her age peering through the crack.

“Please,” She whispered, beckoning her inside. “Come inside before you catch your death.”

Seeing no other option, mostly because she hadn’t thought that far ahead, Y/N bundled up her decadent robes and darted through the door. She embraced the warmth immediately, falling to the ground as her legs finally gave way.

“Princess!”

Y/N looked at the girl once more, smiling at the concern behind her hazel eyes. “Please, call me Y/N.”

“I am Yin,” She said graciously, bowing low and making her flush. “My family is upstairs in the sleeping room, but I thought I heard something outside, and it was our own princess! The Kingdom has been nought without you, despite how popular our King, your cousin, is.”

“You’re too kind, Yin,” Y/N said, a weak grin playing at her lips.

“Anything for one of our monarchs!” Yin exclaimed, albeit quietly.

“I owe you a debt of gratitude for this,” She said, moving to stand. “For your help tonight, I am in your debt, but may I ask one more favour?”

Yin nodded. “Anything.”

“Could I use some clothes? You may keep the silks, sell them if you want, but I cannot be spotted whilst I’m here.”

As if becoming some force of nature, the girl whirled upstairs in a matter of moments, flurrying downstairs once more with an abundance of blankets as well as a change of clothes. Setting up her bed in the dining space by the kitchen – the house seemingly was made of only three rooms, the entire downstairs being open – Y/N did not recall ever falling to sleep, nor changing into her disguise.

Waking up in the morning to a freshly slice moon peach and the attention of an entire family was overwhelming to say the least. They seemed to dote on her despite her insistence that they owed her nothing. Jin was especially enjoying her presence, not only because she was royalty but because of the praise her family was pushing onto her for rescuing the poor princess from the streets of the slums. How did she ever end up there?

Further insistence was taken in the form of sending Yin and Y/N to the finest tea shop in the lower ring. In her new clothes, a pair of green cotton pants and a tunic, she felt comfortable in the fact that it would be incredibly difficult to differentiate her from anyone else in a crowd.

Tea was a luxury too few and far between for the princess. On her travels, they had never really stopped to get the necessary ingredients, nor would it be practical to carry the kind of teapot that Y/N really enjoyed making tea with. If Momo ever got his paws on fine china, Y/N was sure every antique enthusiast in a mile radius would weep. She still infused herbs into the cooking she had done on their travels, well aware of their medicinal properties – though not the cactus kind.

The tea shop was quaint enough, as small as the house shared by Yin and her many family members. Steam tendrils tinted with jasmine, lavender, and vanilla filled the air, drowning all senses on first entrance inside. It was pleasant, though. Somehow, Y/N felt enlightened, calmed and joyous all in one breath.

Taking a seat by the window, she pondered her plans in detail. Firstly, she had to reunite with her friends, but she couldn’t give herself over to the Dai Li. For now, she would lay low, perhaps relying on Yin’s kindness until she could move on. If she couldn’t be with her friends, her mother was the next name on her list. She had to be in the city somewhere, but she was definitely not in the upper ring otherwise Long Feng would have advertised them as a matching domestic pair. If all those plans went wrong, perhaps Y/N should invest in a Pai Sho board.

“Hello, welcome to our little shop. What tea are you interested in today?”

Opening her mouth to speak, Y/N looked up. Her jaw slackened, and the waiter shifted under her gaze. If it weren’t the deadpan tone and the slight lisp that gave it away, it would be shaggy black hair that gave him away.

Zuko was here. Zuko was stood in front of her.

A little gasp escaped her as his scar finally registered in her mind. “Zuko, what did they do to you?”

He flinched, fingers ghosting over his face. “Do I know you?”

“Duckie,” She whispered, his childhood nickname flowing easily from her mouth. “Don’t you recognise your dearest cousin?”

Agni, I have to get Uncle.”

In a flurry of movement, he was gone. Yin stared between her and the empty space he was occupied with morbid curiosity. “Princess, who was that?”

“That was my cousin, Yin,” She gasped, tears welling in her eyes, “And he just said my father is here. He’s here and alive. Oh, Yin, I didn’t know they would be here and- “

“Is that truly you?”

Her rambling was cut off by a soft, unmistakable voice. The entire shop had fallen into a quiet hush as her father stood, not in a general’s uniform but a tea maker’s, a wide smile across his warm face. It had been so many years since his last letter. She had fought against the logical thought that he had perished in battle, and she had been right. Y/N had prayed to the moon every night for his safe return to her, and he had.

Stifling a sob, she launched herself into her father’s arms, embracing him with a hug strong enough to make up for years without them. He was laughing, she realised, and crying too as his body rumbled with the force of his emotions. The clothes he wore didn’t smell of ash and soot, but jasmine tea and freshly lit incense.

“Father,” Y/N said, tears streaming down her face. “You’ve come home to me.”

He gripped her shoulders, looking over her once and counting the years he had been away. “Nothing could ever stop me, my little lotus.”

The tea shop watched on in shock and the purest joy as they reunited, tears brimming in some eyes across the room. Even Zuko, stood at the counter looking sheepish, seemed happier than he had when he hadn’t been recognised.

“Friends!” Iroh exclaimed, grinning with an expression so similar to hers. “Today family has been reunited! My daughter, Jia, has been returned to us! This is a time to celebrate, so, please, your tea is on the house.”

A fake name, of course, but nevertheless she was ecstatic. Even Yin was crying at the sight, dabbing her eyes with her cotton sleeves. All analyses and plans fell empty from her head as all Y/N could do was weep.

Part FifteenPart Seventeen

“The thing he had realised soon after sending Y/N away was that he fell hard and fast.”

image

Spirits, she looked beautiful.

Across the room, Sokka spotted her gliding through the crowd of socialites. With a wide, pretty smile, she brushed off the subtle, vicious approaches of numerous people until she swept to the end of the dinner table. Y/N did always have a knack with animals Sokka remembered as she approached the King’s bear – not platypus bear – and was brought into a hug. It seemed that risking her elegant silks, weaved emerald and gold with a train, wasn’t in the cards as she sat next to the bear, feeding it honeycombs.

It took a moment for the gang to catch his line of sight and realise their friend was only a few metres away. Before they could run to her, before Sokka could even think of what he was going to say, Joo Dee was stood in front of them. Her toothy smile seemed strained.

“What are you doing here?” She asked, and yet it sounded more like a plea.

“You have to leave immediately, or we will be in terrible trouble!”

Making a futile attempt to manoeuvre them to the exit, Sokka pushed against her, his expression twisted with something fierce. “I am not leaving now.”

“You don’t understand!” She hissed, grabbing Sokka’s forearm. “You must go.”

“No!” Sokka yanked his arm back, eyes flickering madly from Joo Dee to the girl across the room he was desperate to see.

In a moment, their scuffle caused a bigger scene; as Sokka reached for Y/N, he was sent flying back into Aang. The pitcher of water he was holding went flying over the head of an unpleasant looking socialite. Somehow Aang’s natural disposition for helping only got them into more trouble as he revealed his identity to the thralls of people. Exasperation rushed over him as easily as a tidal surge swallowed a shoreline whole.

“Aang!” Sokka whisper-shouted, the crowds too awe-struck to listen to the words of a busboy. “You keep their attention. I know how we’re getting to the king.”

Before he could be stopped by stupid questions – his sister loved questioning the idea man – Sokka was heading through that room faster than he thought possible. Pushing past different rich people he didn’t care to ever meet again, he only realised that he had no idea what he wanted to say once he was in front of Y/N and the honoured bear.

“Y/N!” He blurted out, putting his busboy tray on the table in front of a perturbed young man.

From beneath a pair of great, fuzzy arms a familiar face popped up. “Hello?”
Yes, Yue was stunning, but she was ethereal even before she became an omniscient moon spirit. Suki in all of her brute force and earthly beauty, she was intimidating in a different sort of way. The thing he had realised soon after sending Y/N away was that he fell hard and fast. Seeing Y/N, neatly styled hair dishevelled by her sweet need to befriend every animal she comes across, eyes shining with kindness, a smile so wide on her face, made Sokka’s heart ache.

He was speechless as she wriggled out of the bear’s hold, still leaving a single hand on his massive paw – an odd sort of compromise. Spirits, she had a lovely smile. However, there was something wrong.

There was no gleam in her smile; it was empty.

“Are you enjoying the festivities?” She said, scratching the bear’s muzzle as if it were a dog.

“Yeah, but Y/N,” Sokka frowned, desperate, “Don’t you recognise me?”

Her smile faltered for a flicker of a moment. “Should I?”

What was happening here?

Sokka thought fast. “I’m, erm, travelling with the Avatar.”

“Oh, of course!” Y/N exclaimed, parting with the large animal at her side to step closer to him, hand outstretched. “I’m surprised you’ve heard of me, really. I’m hardly a princess here.”

“But how long have you been here?” He asked, the beginnings of an interrogation.

“Well, my mother sent me out travelling for a few years, so I could understand the people of the kingdom better,” She grinned, obviously remembering something fondly – what, he didn’t know. “I came home only a few days ago, actually!”

“We must have met when you were travelling then,” Sokka said, his voice calm and amicable, but his mind reeling with questions, possibilities, and heartache.

“Remember? We met in Gaoling. Your mother sent you to live with the Beifongs.”

And then something passed behind her eyes that gave him hope.

“I don’t think I recall- “

“Yeah, and you were going to go home, but we kidnapped you! Well, not kidnapped you kidnapped you. It was a mutual kidnapping! And you saved me from a massive saber-tooth lion-moose!”

“I’m sorry, but I really- “

“And you saved me in the desert. I’d be dead if it weren’t for you. I seem to remember calling you princess before I knew you were a princess? Sorry about that, by the way. Or maybe I’m not? You didn’t react negatively.”

“Sokka- “

“I felt horrible after you left, and I knew it was all my fault, and I’m so sorry and- “

“Sokka.”

He looked at her for the first time since he started talking. Y/N looked terrified. Watching her eyes dart around the room frenzied like a cornered mink snake, ready to bite, Sokka reached for her. She accepted him readily. Wrapping her hand around his wrist, she shrank, her eyes no longer empty but instead full of fear.

“Sokka, where are we?” Y/N hissed, tugging him away from the table and bear, which seemed much sadder without her.

“You really don’t know?” He whispered, bringing a hand to her cheek. “Y/N, what happened? Where’s Suki and the others?”

Before she could say anything else, something yanked him away from her, and he watched her slip from his vision once more. Fighting against whatever had him by the scruff – it wasn’t a person, not exactly – was futile, but he fought nevertheless. As he tried to cry out to her, a hand wrapped around his mouth, muffling any speech. This went beyond weird; this place was dangerous.

Sokka had left the room of bright revelry to a more ominously lit one. Inside were all of his friends and a shady looking official, Long Feng. Stood in front of a hearth, the harsh planes of the man’s face were illuminated by green flame. He was tall, though seemingly non-threatening on first glance. However, as Sokka studied the man further, looked at the sneering curl to his smiles, the empty sentiments to his polite words. This man was a snake in the tall grass that was the socialites just outside the door.

“Why can’t we see the king?” Katara demanded, staring the man down. “We have information about the war.”

Long Feng smiled, the thin, neutral expression of a politician. “The Earth King has no time to get involved with political squabbles and the day-to-day minutia of military activities.”

“You don’t understand,” Aang said, more boyish than Sokka has seen him in the longest time. “This could be the most important thing he’s ever heard!”

“What’s most important to his royal majesty is maintaining the cultural heritage of Ba Sing Se,” He said, that irritatingly subtle smile still plastered across his face. “All his duties relate to issuing decrees on such matters. It’s my job to oversee the rest of the city’s resources, including the military.”

Toph scowled. “He’s your puppet!”

“Wait,” Sokka said, voice low, furious. “Are you the reason Y/N couldn’t remember me?”

The mask cracked. It was the slightest twitch in his emotionless façade, but through that shone through something far more sinister. He turned to stare at Sokka, silent and domineering.

“His Majesty is a god to his people, as is the princess,” He responded easily, his eyes hardened. “Perhaps Y/N wanted to forget you. I have no power over her mind.”

That, Sokka decided, was a fight he wouldn’t win today. “We’ve found out about a solar eclipse that will leave the Fire Nation defenseless. If Ba Sing Se could lead an invasion- “

Before he could continue, a Dai Li agent burst in the room. Without batting an eye, he walked past the group, ignoring their very presence as he went to Long Feng’s side. Low, conspiratorial whispering occurred between the pair before the agent swept away. Drama, apparently, was important in being a member of the secret fascist police in Ba Sing Se. The cracks in their masks, however, were growing still.

Something had happened.

“Until now, you’ve been treated as our honored guests,” Long Feng smiled, though the way his lip curled made it more of a snarl. “From now on, however, you will be watched every moment by Dai Li agents. It would be a shame if you weren’t able to complete your quest, or find your bison.”

Threat. That was what was lined behind every smile – every look. Even Joo Dee – or the multiple Joo Dees, considering they had just been given an obvious replacement – seemed threatening with her too wide smile and eyes. Toph was right about them coming to hate the city, but somehow this was even worse than her predictions.

Escorted out of the room, back through the great room, Sokka searched desperately for her. It was to no avail, however. The room was empty of Y/N. Whilst Aang focused on searching for Appa, Sokka knew who he was looking out for.

He was going to find her again.

Part FourteenPart Sixteen

“The creature scowled at the boys, eyes sadder still.”

image

Sokka was not enjoying Ba Sing Se.

As big cities go, the lack of hero-worship was disconcerting, and not just because it meant less boost for his ego! People within the walls seemed to have no idea that there even was a war outside. Needless to say, there was some super dodgy policing going on that didn’t seem entirely legal, and don’t even get him started on Joo Dee. After the pretty substantial amount of time it took for Toph to even acknowledge him after, well, Y/N, she wholeheartedly agreed with an eerie impression for flavour.

Perhaps more frustrating than all of the weird happenings in Ba Sing Se was the fact that none of them could help Aang do his spiritual Avatar shtick and save the world. With the Avatar on side, Sokka had expected to slide on by easier than an otter penguin on ice.

These thoughts plagued his mind, clouding his brain to the point he could hardly sleep through the nights. It was only made worse by his now clockwork waking at dawn. The problem was he woke up alone now. Regardless, Sokka had made it his task to come up with an idea to get them an audience with the Earth King. So far, the plans involved disguising themselves as a travelling circus to get in with the entertainment, or a daring heist in which Toph teaches Momo to earthbend.

As they all began to stir from sleep – sleeping in one room just like they would when they camped in the wilderness – Katara rose with a yawn. Stretching out her limbs, she narrowly avoided tripping over Qin’s tail as she exited out the front door.

Sokka could have sworn an entirely different person walked back in.

“I got it!” She cried, triumphant. “I know how we’re going to see the Earth King!”

“How are we supposed to do that?” Toph asked, more cynical. “It’s not like we have a princess in our group anymore, and you know that one doesn’t just pop in on the Earth King!

The Joo Dee impression? Neat. The unnecessary dig at Sokka? Ouch.

“The king is having a party at the palace tonight for his pet bear.”

Aang frowned. “You mean, platypus bear?”

“No, it just says ‘bear’,” Katara said, rereading the papers in her hand.

Sokka scoffed. “You sure it doesn’t say skunk bear, sis?”

“Or his armadillo bear.”

“Gopher bear?”

“No,” Katara confirmed, face twisted into confusion. “Just… bear.”

This place was freaking weird.

Bears aside, Katara had thought up a solid plan to get them into the venue; Sokka saved his proud tears for another time as yet another in his family had achieved the ingenuity of being an ‘idea person’. Apparently, it was a plan wilder than faking a duel to distract the guards and sneak in though as Toph shut it down quite quickly.

“Won’t work.”

They all stared at the girl, Aang and Sokka exchanging worried looks as they braced themselves for another clash; there had been plenty since Y/N left.

“Why not?”

“Well, no offense to you simple country folk,” Toph grinned, taking a bite out of the pastry she was sharing with Qin – gross, by the way, “But a real society crowd would spot you a mile away. You’ve got no manners!”

Sokka blanched. “Toph, you are literally going halfsies on a peanut butter bun with an overgrown lizard.”

The steed hissed at Sokka as it gulped down the rest of the food. Out of everyone there, it seemed Qin had lost the most respect for him. As funny as it is taking the mongoose lizard out for walks in the too pristine neighbourhoods of the upper ring, she wouldn’t sleep on his chest anymore, nor would she tolerate his snoring. There was a bruise on his chest to prove her disdain.

“I learned proper society behaviour and chose to leave it,” Toph said, voice trailing slightly. “You never learned anything, and frankly, it’s a little too late.”

Perking up, Sokka couldn’t rein in his enthusiasm. “Aha! But you learned it! You could teach us!”

“Yeah!” Aang joined in, hopping to his feet. “I’m mastering every element. How hard could manners be?”

The two grinned at each other as they began some caricature of high society for the ladies’ pleasure – and their utter amusement. Fitted with curtains and sophisticated accents, they bowed at each other again and again until their heads clashed. With a yelp and a grunt, the two boys hit the deck, smothering snickers of laughter into their elbows, forgetting why they had even ended up there in the first place.

“Katara might be able to pull it off,” Toph cut into their shenanigans, “But you two would be lucky to pass as busboys.”

“But, Toph,” Sokka simpered, “I feel so fancy!”

With a snort, Toph groaned as she came to her feet, joints cracking in supposed effort. Leaving no warning, she grabbed Katara by the wrist and led her out of the living space, probably to teach her some ‘etiquette’. The room became quiet for a few moments until the boys cracked out laughing again; mimicking them, Momo had wrapped himself in a discarded curtain as he attempted to glide across the floor with grace. It seemed, however, that Qin was feeling especially malicious today as she pinned the end of the curtain with her tail, watching Momo struggle against her full weight until he fell.

That entertainment, too, died down as Momo abandoned his cloak. Qin, now subdued, huffed, eyes looking completely sad as she rested her head on her front legs. Twiddling his thumbs, Sokka looked up at Aang, his wisest and possibly youngest friend.

“Aang, do you think I was wrong?” He asked, quieter than usual.

“Sokka,” He said gently, “You’re going to have to be more specific.”

Barking out a laugh, he shoved the Avatar’s shoulder. “You know what I mean.”

“I don’t blame you for your knee-jerk reaction,” Aang said, his words careful, considerate in a way that reminded Sokka exactly who he was talking to.

“Would you have had the same reaction if I started firebending? Or if it turned out Suki was a firebender?”

“I don’t know,” He groaned, head in his hands. “I guess not, but I felt like she lied to me, y’know?”

Aang nodded. “But it doesn’t mean your hatred of the people who hurt you should brand Y/N as the same as them.”

“I suppose,” Sokka said, resting his chin on his knee. “Hey, do you wanna play a game?”

They occupied themselves for what seemed to be hours as Aang consistently beat him at different games. Nursing a bruised forehead – and ego – Sokka almost didn’t notice Katara and Toph walk back into the room, nor the fact that the sun was beginning to set over the horizon. The girls were giggling as they entered, hiding their painted faces behind their fans. It was impossible to ignore, however, the dreamy look now carved onto Aang’s face.

Part of Sokka wanted to say dude, that’s my baby sister, but the other half knew that Aang was harmless.

“Wow.” The Avatar was well and truly stunned. “You look beautiful.”

Harmless or not, Sokka didn’t miss an opportunity to flick his forehead in revenge. Even if his sister wanted to respond, Toph snapped a fan in front of her mouth. “Don’t talk to the commoners, Katara.”

Oh, the Blind Bandit was definitely enjoying being able to push them all around. Nevertheless, she and Katara had given them an in on the party, and the king. Turning to Qin for a ride, the creature scowled at the boys, eyes sadder still. Ignoring the pang of guilt, they snuck out of their house and headed for the very centre of Ba Sing Se.

Being behind the girls, they didn’t see them enter the palace, but were fairly certain that all was going to plan; many nobles milled into the grand building until the yard was empty of decadent hairstyles and luscious silks. Darkness loomed over the palace as the abundance of lanterns began to pool the area in delicate firelight. It glinted gold off the lion statue Sokka and Aang were hidden behind, spotting the terracotta ground with what looked to be sunspots. If it weren’t for Yue’s shine higher in the sky, perhaps they would’ve believed it was the day.

Sokka supposed fire could be somewhat pretty.

“Where are they?” Aang asked, jaw clenched slightly as he fiddled with his hands.

“Look,” Sokka said, staring at his friend and his nervous movements, “I came with a back-up plan, okay? We dress Momo like a ghost, right? He flies by the guards, creating a distraction. Then-”

Aang grinned, before taking a good look at the yard. “Or we could go in as these guys. Toph said we might pass as busboys!”

“Okay,” Sokka grinned, rolling his eyes, “But remember that Momo ghost plan.”

Sneaking across the light dappled floor, the boys took some busboy uniforms, walking in procession following the other workers with no issue. As they strolled through the halls of the servers’ entrance, Sokka was reminded of what he had learned about Y/N. Had she grown up within these palace walls? Surely cousin to the king meant she had some sort of nobility. He never really asked her about it; he had a bad run when it came to princesses.

They were handed plates of food, kitted out in uniform. It was itchy, and Sokka was definitely missing his Water Tribe garb. Scanning the room for his sister and pygmy puma friend, he handed out tiny food to rich people with ease. Without Katara’s hair loopies, or Toph’s loudmouth attitude, it was a harder task than he thought it would be. It was only made more difficult by Aang’s anxious whispering every time he passed him.

“Another crab puff, please.”

Well, he found one of them.

“You found us!” Aang cried, nearly blowing their cover; Sokka finally understood what Toph meant about them not passing for high society folk.

He watched the ensuing conversation with some amusement, sometimes putting a sarcastic quip in for good measure, but he was still looking for something. He didn’t realise what it was until he saw her.

“Y/N?”

“Go get our idiot.”

TW: Canon typical injuries and Appa’s Lost Days

image

At the verge of a great wood, the Kyoshi Warriors woke with the dawn. It had been a few days now that Y/N had travelled with them. Still, she could not summon a steady hand to paint the precise lines on her face. It was because of this that Yu was straddling Y/N’s waist, gently and meticulously. She felt powerful with this mask on; she was anonymous and free of her firebending roots when they coloured her skin with tinctures and makeup.

“Stop it.”

Y/N looked up slightly, trying her best not to move and ruin all of Yu’s work. She stared up vaguely in question.

“You’re thinking too loudly!” She heard Li call from across their small camp, the smile audible in her voice. “Yu needs complete silence to complete her work.”

Fighting off a quirking grin, Y/N attempted to quash her thoughts in favour of studying Yu’s face. Beyond the white of the Kyoshi makeup, she had a soft, round face. Brown eyes, deeper than the pine that faced them had a determined glint in them. Black hair was twisted into two buns on the top of her head, no wisps to be seen beyond her Warrior headband. Every part of her uniform was pristine.

Climbing off of her with surprising agility – Y/N knew that her legs would be near dead after being sat that still for that long – Yu stood up, ready to leave for their journey. With far less grace, Y/N clambered up from the dirt, nearly falling back into it face first. If it weren’t for the swift save of Suki’s arms, perhaps she would have ruined Yu’s handiwork.

“Watch yourself,” Suki grinned, pushing her up back onto her feet. “We wouldn’t want Yu to have a breakdown now, would we?”

A breathy laugh escaped her rouged lips. Steady on the earth beneath her feet, Y/N joined her friends in collecting up their supplies. The plan was simple; they would traverse through the wooded land and beyond deep into the Earth Kingdoms, finding and crushing Fire Nation efforts on the smaller scale. If they could cut off supply lines, perhaps they could cause enough disruption to stunt the schemes of Ozai.

There was an air of comradery that seemed suited to the day. Sunlight filtered through the trees, spotting the mossy undergrowth with sunbeams tinted with chlorophyll. It seemed to seek her skin, reaching for the firebender’s fingertips like primal flame. She woke with the sun, and it tracked her throughout her day.

The heat became more intense, however, and the Warriors became more and more grateful for the shade that the forest blessed them with. It was Suki’s decision to stop and rest, to recuperate as the sunshine became unbearable for those unsuited to heat. With a soft smile Y/N watched as Yu foraged a nearby berry bush, her little finger wrapped around Li’s. There was something about hand-holding that she found especially tender. They were so openly affectionate that it made her heart hurt.

“Huh, must have been some fight.” Li chuckled with some derision, holding something in her other hand with care.

Y/N didn’t think much of it until Suki stepped forward. “Wait, let me see that.”

And in Li’s hand was the key to Y/N’s new journey: bison fur.

A sharp gasp escaped her lips as she stumbled to her feet, snatching some more fur from below the brush. The coarse texture made her fingers itch, summoning a twitch in her nose. Forcing down what would only be a very violent sneeze, Y/N called out Appa’s name into the empty depths of the forest, following the trail of cream fur deeper into the flora. Suki, too, shouted after the bison, hot on her trail. The ground steepened. Y/N’s calf muscles burned with the effort it took to scale the out of the compact woods and into an open area.

A large stone structure stood, lonely as it basked in the sun.

Tentative, Y/N took a step forward and peered into the structure. Spirits, she cried. Slapping her hands over her mouth, she took in the sight of Appa in manacles, looking hungry and scared. Quills from some kind of attacking creature were still embedded in her skin, slight welts rising from where they had struck.

In abject horror, she turned away. “Suki…”

“Y/N, it’s okay,” The Warrior said, voice soft, arms snaking over her shoulders, her embrace warm. “We’ve found him, so now we can help him.”

“Okay,” Y/N sniffled, dabbing tears off of her face. “Could you fetch Yu, see if she has any fruit spare?”

Suki nodded, eyes fixed on Y/N. Gentler than the breeze from her golden fan, she brought her thumb up to her face, wiping away a run-away tear. The air was knocked swiftly from Y/N’s lungs. Before she could process that moment, the Warrior was already sprinting back down through the woods.

Taking a calming breath, she stepped back towards Appa. Igniting a finger, she held it in front of her, wanting to see the face of an old friend. He roared and she cried some more, hushing him like a mother would sooth an infant. She smiled as the flame shifted from a harsh red to a more subtle yellow, the same golden hue of nomad robes. Though he was skittish, it seemed to be enough to quash Appa’s anxiety.

When Y/N found out who hurt him, she wouldn’t even offer them the dignity of an Agni Kai.

The dank structure illuminated by a single flame, Y/N worked swiftly to remove the quills. Though he fussed and whined – only encouraging more ‘tear bending’ from her – she was quick in making sure his welts would go down and his skin was clear. The manacles were another issue; yes, she could easily melt the metal, or with enough force kick through smaller parts of the chains, but it would likely spook Appa. Her best bet was her fellow Kyoshi Warriors.

“Y/N!” Suki called, creeping towards them slow and calm. “Yu found some apples.”

Resting her forehead briefly on Appa’s, Y/N stepped out of the shadows to approach her human friends. Feeling brave, the bison reared his head out too, following the scent of fresh fruit. The humans were careful around him, staying low and quiet. Only Y/N and Suki could approach him fully, Appa only allowing Yu close because of the food in her arms.

Soon all of them could approach him as he began to gain their trust. Y/N muttered kind, soothing words to him, hand brushing over his nose, scratching below his ear. Calmer, he licked all of Yu’s hard work off her face – not at all angering Yu, leaving Li to give her a warm, preventative cuddle.

The giggling and cuddling soon halted though as thunderous thudding closed up behind them. Pulling a frown onto her face, Y/N heard the tell-tale calls of the mongoose lizards; the people who had found them were Fire Nation. Side-stepping in front of Appa, she shielded him from the three girls in front of them. She recognised the two from their last encounter – Mai and Ty Lee – but the third sent a chill down her spine.

“My, my, you’re easy to find.” The grin on Azula’s face was sharp, her teeth lined like pearly knives. “It’s really astounding my brother hasn’t captured you yet.”

In a defence position, the Kyoshi Warriors had their fans out, ready to strike. Suki stepped forward, face carved with the righteous fury of an ancient spirit.

“What do you want with us?”

Azula let out a cruel laugh. “Who are you? The Avatar’s fan girls?”

As Ty Lee clicked onto her joke with jovial praise, Y/N scoffed. “Good one, Princess! I’m glad to know someone who needs the affirmation of others to function has so much power in her nation!”

“And you are?” The princess scoffed, her golden eyes narrowing into deadly slits like those of a serpent. “You do look familiar though, I do admit. Have I come through your back-water village at some point and steamrolled your home?”

“If you’re looking for the Avatar,” Suki stepped forward again, anxious as she cut Y/N off, “You’re out of luck.”

A moment of opportunity. Y/N saw the ravenous glint in Azula’s eyes as she leapt off her steed, a fury of flames aimed directly at Appa. Taking a protective stance, she was welcoming of the great shield of fans blocking the attack. Her lackeys followed suit as Ty Lee and Mai, too, jumped into action. The ensuing battle happened so quickly.

Fury bubbled in Y/N’s stomach as she watched Yu be pinned to a tree by her sleeves, held there by a pair of Mai’s blades. A distressed yell escaped her as she narrowly avoided a third, piercing the tree right in front of her throat.

Growling, Li went full throttle as she swung at Mai, fans forgotten, fists ready to cause indescribable pain. However, as Li and Yu come as a pair, Mai had her back up. Their fight was forgotten, however, as a surge of blue fire pushed against Y/N, the heat like nothing she had experienced.

Before she could bend the flames away, Suki jumped in front of them, deflecting the blast with her fans. Y/N screamed at her to move, but she was rooted to the ground, a force of nature. Spirits, she was so stupid and beautiful.

“Go, the both of you!” Suki yelled, swinging her sword at Azula.

“No!” Y/N cried, moving to her side. “I won’t leave you here!”

Face scrunching up in frustration, Suki shouted, furious. With a flurry of attacks, she had Azula on the back foot, and as Yu joins in, free from Mai’s knives, the princess is forced into a retreat. As the Warriors and nobles fought all around them, Suki took a moment in the midst of the chaos – a quiet moment.

Grabbing the back of her neck, Suki pulled Y/N’s lips to hers. A quick, desperate kiss with those soft lips had her unravelling. As she moved her face back to look at her, the Kyoshi Warrior nodded, gaze suddenly sad.

“Go get our idiot,” She laughed breathlessly. “He’ll need you.”

A watery laugh left Y/N’s mouth as Suki pushed her towards Appa. Spirits, she was confused – and happy. How she could be happy leaving her dear friend behind was beyond her in that moment, but she was somehow. As she scaled the bison’s back, Y/N called out the famous yip yip and away they went.

Looking over the battlefield, Suki had returned to duelling Azula. She was regal, a tempest in her attacks. Yu and Li were pinning down Mai and Ty Lee with a flurry of attacks, supported by the other Kyoshi Warriors. Despite her retreat, Y/N was optimistic. The tides soon changed. For the briefest of moments, Azula caught Y/N’s eye, a malevolent smile stretching across her face. In quick succession, she blinded Suki and the Warriors with a great wall of pure icy fire, then pulling all her energy into her hands. A great bolt of lightning struck one of the trees, bringing it down with a massive crack. As Appa brought her further away from the ground, she heard screams.

“Suki!”

They were over water now. Y/N hadn’t stopped crying since Azula brought the tree down. Head hanging over Appa’s back, she watched her tears fall into the ocean, mingle with the salt water below until it became invisible to her eye. A small group of ships sailed below, and for a moment Y/N thought she saw Sokka on them. A trick of the light, she convinced herself afterwards, or the trick of a malicious spirit.

She let Appa continue on their path without question, unbothered by their nearing to what looked like an Air Temple. Was her idiot here? Maybe Appa knew something Y/N didn’t.

Knocked off his back, Y/N was ready to scold the bison, only to see the glee in his dark eyes. He was playing, just like a baby would play. As he jumped around the ruins of the Temple, she watched with a small smile. The man watching them, though, wiped it off her face quickly enough.

“You,” He said pointing at the pair of them, “Are struggling to find peace.”

Y/N snorted, taking a defensive stance in front of the bison. “What gave you that impression?”

“Come, Princess,” The man said, amicable. “We have much to discuss.”

Part TwelvePart Fourteen

“We’re both warriors in our own right, and too good to be surrounded by stupid boys all the time.“

image

Crossing back over the Serpent’s Pass was easy. The heavy weight on her chest that pummelled her out of nowhere was infinitely hard.

Across the deep-water chasm, Y/N carried Suki, ignoring the strain on her calves and arms. Without the serpent or the extra people holding them back, the girls made their way over the Pass before night fell. The biting cold was not a problem either as Y/N kept a flame lit in her hand as the sun began to lower in the grey sky, enveloped by a cluster of clouds.

“I sent a message ahead of us,” Suki told her idly, adjusting her headband as they walked.

“Oh?”

The Warrior nodded. “The other Kyoshi Warriors will meet us back past the docks and into the wooded area westward.”

Nodding, Y/N focused on the ground beneath her feet. It was unchanging, dusty and sharp, as they began to exit the steepest climbs of the Pass, watching it plateau with little interest. If she could analyse the rocky path they were on, it would distract from the rocky terrain she and Sokka had metaphorically stumbled onto.

“Why did you invite me to come along with you, Suki?” Y/N said, her voice too loud in her ears after hours of endless silence.

Suki smiled at her. “Call it a hunch, but I think we’re like-minded people.”

“Because we’ve both had crushes on Sokka?”

“What?” She snorted, a massive grin now on her face. “No! What I had was a fleeting moment of ‘oh he’s cute’ and that was the end of that.”

“Oh,” Y/N said, flushing with embarrassment. “Well now I feel like an idiot.”

With a gentle nudge, Suki shook her head. “Don’t. We’re both warriors in our own right, and too good to be surrounded by stupid boys all the time.”

The joke summoned a low chuckle in Y/N’s throat, suddenly washing away the bashful feeling settling in her gut. Suki was easy to talk to, it seemed, but that ease with soon disappear. At the end of the journey, the she saw the other Kyoshi Warriors. They were in full garb, waiting.

She felt more out of place than ever. Frowning, Y/N smothered the fire with her shame. A furious grey stretched over the atmosphere, the colour of smoke. Inhaling a deep, controlled breath, she tried in desperation to replace the pressure in her chest with warmth, and for a moment she succeeded. The blossoming fire lily of energy spread, easing the tension in her muscles, her intense scowl softening.

“Warriors.” Suki announced their presence with all the nobility of a Fire Nation general. “This is Y/N. She will be travelling with us for a while.”

A murmur rippled through the group as easy and detrimental as an ocean tide. Y/N had no real experience with other girls her age. Sure, when she had been to visit her father in the Fire Nation Palace, Azula had been welcoming, so to speak. By welcoming, she meant more that the princess seemed to want to add her to a collection. She seemed to keep friends like butterflies, pinned to a board by their wings. This would also be ignoring the age gap between them; the same could even be said for Toph and Katara.

This was going to be strange.

“Yes, she is a firebender, but I would trust her if I had to put my life in her hands,” Suki said, voice turning sterner, more sincere, overcoming the collective whisper of doubt. “You didn’t see her risk her life for the sake of others. Y/N is fierce, and she will fit in with us for as long as she needs.”

With that, Suki had finished. Quelling the uncertainty with swift decisiveness, Y/N couldn’t help but admire the leadership she was displaying.

Tents set up and food gathered, all that was left to do was set up a campfire. Rather than letting one of the Warriors ache over sparking flame with rock, the firebender ignited her forefinger, pointing it at the pile of dry wood collected and arranged with the neat discipline of a trained fighter. Y/N ignored the yelps of the girls around her as the fire hit the wood with fierce accuracy. Under the intense heat, the wood began to crack, splintering and cracking as loud as thunder. As it settled, no longer spitting like a vicious pygmy puma, the girls wasted no time lifting a cooking pot over the campfire.

“No meat in the soup tonight.” A gruff voice said, startling Y/N. “Is that okay with you, firebender?”

She looked at the owner of such a low voice; a tall, leggy girl was stirring different nuts into a broth, stoking the flames every now and then to keep it boiling. Other than a single braid that was slung over her shoulder, her head was completely shaved.

“I don’t mind,” Y/N smiled, swallowing her nerves. “When you travel with a monk, you get used to a vegetarian lifestyle.”

The Warrior looked at her with some curiosity as she continued crushing the shells off of the main ingredients for their meal. “Huh. The Avatar, I’m guessing. What’s he like?”

“Sweet,” Was the first word that blurted out of her mouth. “Young. Fiercely devoted.”

“Glad to know our saviour is sweet.”

“Hey, I also said devoted!”

The two girls stared at each other before bursting out with laughter. They sat there for a few silent moments. Y/N tamed the flames down to a simmering heat as her acquaintance stirred in some green herbs. It smelled divine, summoning images of pine, hiking in the rain, and home. Home was the strongest memory dredged up by the broth.

“I heard,” The girl said, a teasing smile playing on her pretty lips, “That you’re really here because you got into an argument with a boy.”

Perhaps if any of the other girls there had teased like that, Y/N would’ve lost her temper, but this one seemed kind. “You could say that we had a conflict of interests.”

“Those interests being fire and water?” She continued to joke, nudging Y/N’s shoulder. “I’m glad to know I’ll never have these problems with boys.”

Y/N furrowed her brows. “What do you mean?”

“I don’t like boys,” The girl shrugged with an easy grin. “Girls, however…”

“Wait, that’s an option?”

Now looking as confused as each other, they were interrupted by another Kyoshi Warrior. This girl had her face bare of paint, her entire body beaming with pure light. Wrapping her arms around the girl at the pot, she planted a kiss on her cheek before looking up to see Y/N, who sat shocked.

“Li, are you already bullying this poor girl?” The cheery one frowned – as much as she could looking like sunshine personified.

“Of course not, Yu,” Li said, clasping her free hand over Yu’s. “I’m just enlightening her to the many possibilities that being in the Kyoshi Warriors has granted me.”

This was a revelation to Y/N. It was her great grandfather who had spearheaded the criminalisation of ‘abnormal’ relationships, so she had never witnessed such explicit affection between two girls. It made sense though, why she never recognised her admiration of fellow women as anything more than friendship after a certain age. In fact, watching Li and Yu be so tender together reminded Y/N of an array of people she had considered close friends, those she would stare at a few seconds too long.

There had been a guard in Ozai’s palace with whom Y/N often walked the gardens when she would visit many years ago. Yes, she had been very young, but she remembered this woman with such intensity; she had these glittering gold eyes, as if someone had caught the sun in manacles and poured its blessing into her. She remembered, Princess Y/N, besotted with this woman and announcing to her that one day she would marry her. She startled at how panicked she had turned, and became sad when she never saw her again.

Even after her, there had been others she had admired; Jin who lived near her mother, Suki to some extent, and she was now realising how she had completely melted in front of Li.

But then there was Jìngyi and Sokka. Where did they fit?

“Sweetness,” Yu whispered to Li, “I think you broke the poor thing.”

“Hey, firebender,” Li said, brushing her companion off, “First bowl of soup fresh just for you.”

Numb, she took the bowl with a nod. “You can call me Y/N.”

That scent was back again as the pleasant nutty broth exuded heat. Swirling up in tendrils of steam, Y/N caught those glimpses of home again, but they were even stronger now – perhaps more melancholy and informed. But who was it she was seeing? Where was home?

Sipping a spoonful, her entire body warmed up in a way that could only be comforting. It was like the embrace of a fireplace after being caught in the rain. Spirits, it was good. It was definitely better than anything her and Katara had managed to cook up from the wilds. Watching her new acquaintances, Y/N realised their bond was forged in something other than affection; it seemed that Li was the cook and Yu the forager. Love, it seemed, could flourish somewhere that no one would ever expect it.

“This is lovely, thank you,” Y/N said with the utmost sincerity, bowing her head lowly.

Usually, she was all about etiquette, but the flavour and the sad pit in her stomach made her desperate to wolf the meal down. So many words to describe one bowl - splendid, delicious, homely – but Y/N could find none to describe how she was feeling.

“Tomorrow,” Li cut in past Y/N’s thoughts, “Yu and I, that being my Yu, will help you get ready for the journey ahead.”

Y/N allowed a small giggle to pass her lips at Li’s bad joke. “What do you mean?”

“If you’re travelling with the Kyoshi Warriors, you have to look like one!” Yu laughed, tapping her foot against Y/N’s knee as she took a seat opposite her.

“What, with the–” YN gestured to her face, mimicking the swipe of a brush over her eyes and lips.

“Yes!” Yu said, excited, “And with you uniform as well.”

“Is that okay?”

All three of the girls looked up behind Y/N’s shoulder to see a now bare faced Suki. Her red hair was tied back haphazardly in a pony tail, wisps of hair falling either side of her face. Out of any uniform whatsoever and in some comfy looking sleep clothes, she looked more relaxed.

Suki wasn’t looking at the other girls though. Suki was looking at Y/N.

“Oh!” Y/N flushed, sheepish. “Yeah, that would be great! Thank you for allowing me to travel with you.”

“Not at all,” She brushed off, taking a seat next to her on the ground, sandwiching her between her and Li. “Soup is going down a treat, girls. I’m sure we’ll all be sleeping warm in our sleeping bags tonight.”

A sleeping bag.

Oh no.

“Where am I sleeping, Suki?” Y/N asked, placing an empty bowl down on the ground – though it was refilled pretty quickly. “I mean, I don’t have problems with staying warm usually, so it’s fine if I don’t have a sleeping bag, but– “

“Y/N,” Suki interrupted, “You can have my sleeping mat and just lie between two of us just in case the winds pick up.”

“Okay, thank you.”

Crisis averted, Y/N thought as she dug through another bowl of soup. But what kind of crisis, she had to wonder. Crisis or not, she had no trouble getting to sleep under an ocean of stars, laid between Suki and Li. She felt comfortable – content, even – which was new. Perhaps she wouldn’t have too much trouble travelling with the Kyoshi Warriors after all.

And she’d hardly thought about Sokka all evening.

(So i almost killed off the reader. I had three different ending but this one was the one I felt most people wanted. I might eventually post the alternate endings but I didn't want to upset anyone by killing off the reader so. Also really like the friendship between Zuko and the reader and wish I could have highlighted it more earlier on)

STORY:

You spent the time since you were taken away in a cell opposite to Uncle Iroh. Azula said you were a traitor and Firelord Ozai decided it was best to keep you close. Guards came to collect you once a day and interrogate you but you had seen the worst they would do when you were trained as a guard,

“What do you know about the Avatar,” or “Is there a chance the avatar survived?” or “Is there a plan to assassinate the Firelord?” Each question just earned a laugh for you. Your arms were tied above your head so that you couldn’t attack them. Sometimes they would hit you, burn you, or use knives to place shallow cuts on your body. At night you would attempt to clean your wounds. Iroh kept you company while you were in your cell.

Sokka had spent every day making plans to take down the firelord, to stop the fire nation, to get you back. He was angry that he wasn’t there to help you to save you. He was angry at Zuko and Azula for taking you. He hated to admit it but he was mad at you for leaving him again.

On the day of the black sun the guards took you one last time. Your arms were tied above your head as another interrogation began. You were in the middle of laughing in the guards’ faces when you saw Zuko walk in and knock out the two guards cutting you down. You had planned to fight against him but he spoke before you could.

“I don’t want to hurt you, I want to help the avatar take down my father,” He said, placing one of your arms over his shoulder as he helped you to your feet.

“I guess I’m in a trusting mood,” you mumbled as he helped you escape. You both ended up in a hot air balloon following Appa. I felt nice to feel the breeze again and to see the sun.

“Why did you change your mind now?” You inquired, leaning on side of the balloon, holding your bruised ribs as you took in a deep breath.

“I realized my destiny,” he stated, plainly. I forgot how cold he is, you thought, letting out a small laugh before wincing.

“Gosh, you never were a talker, Where is Iroh when you need him?” You joked trying to lighten the mood but you could see Zuko tense up at the name.

“I wish I knew.” You raised your eyebrow at him and he continued, “Before I came to help you, I went to break Uncle out but he was already gone,” he explained. The rest of the time was spent in silence; neither of you were brave enough to break.

You and Zuko landed in a wooded area where he thought of ways to approach Aang. You sat on the ground and picked at the grass. Your mind raced at the thoughts of seeing Sokka again and then your hesitation set in. Maybe I should go just yet, you thought to yourself, Maybe I should wait til i’ve healed a bit. You poked at one of the bruises on your body.

“Hello Zuko, here” you could hear him talk to a frog. You pretended to ignore it. You tried to push all the thoughts out of your head as you felt the pit in your stomach grow.

“Hey those cuts look bad.” Zuko said, after he finished talking to the frog.

“Iroh helped me clean them up, They should be fine” You said.

“I’m sorry,” He said softly. You could see the want to change in his eyes. You had spent a year and a half with him and had never seen him look anything but angry and confident.

“It’s okay you’re doing the right thing now,” you placed your hand on his shoulder.

“Yeah, Lets go talk to the avatar,” He said.

“His name is Aang,” You said, “and I think I should stay here for right now.” you said quickly adding, “I’m tired and these injuries hurt a lot. I don’t think I could make it there”

“Okay,” he huffed, turning and heading up to the air temple. The whole time he was gone you paced and walked in circles. You kept thinking about how you should have gone, smacking yourself when you think about it.

“You could have warned me you are Sokka’s soulmate,” you heard the voice call out.

“Sorry did you tell him I was here,” You asked, feeling like your stomach had jumped into your throat.

“I never got the chance,” he said, taking a seat. You let out a breath of relief

“That bad huh?” he nodded, “They will come around eventually. Aang will probably be the first to come around.” A smile spread on your face, “The worst will probably be Katara maybe Sokka, But they will come around”

“Thanks, (Y/N), I should go get some sleep,” He said.

“We’ll go back together tomorrow,” you said, “I’ll help you convince them”

You paced around while ZUko slept for a while and once you finally fell asleep, You were woken about an hour later to a scream of, “You burned by feet”

Zuko was chasing after you tried to get up but a wave of pain went through your body. Toph sent a rock that sent Zuko in the air before he screamed, “Why am I so bad at being good?” You finally managed to get up and walked over to him. As you were standing over him, “It was an accident and she will realize that, calm down” you said.

The next day you went with Zuko to the air temple when the assassin was attacking the gang. Only Zuko would hire an assassin that wouldn’t stop no matter what. You huffed and did your best to assist in protecting everyone. You and Zuko walked to the group after defeating the assassin.

“(Y/N),” Sokka breathed out. You walked up to him enveloping him in a hug, wincing as he wrapped his arms around you. Sokka apologized, letting you out of his grasp but grabbing a hold of your hand instead.

Zuko was talking about how he changed and how he wanted to help Aang restore peace.

“I think you guys should let Zuko help you,” You spoke out, “I wouldn’t be here if he hadn’t helped me.”

The group all agreed to let Zuko join them. You were glad you knew what it felt like wanting to be accepted. Sokka had barely left your side since he had seen you again.

“I’m sorry,” Sokka said looking at the bruises on your arm. You slipped your hand into his.

“I’m okay,” You said, “It’s nothing I can’t handle” you said, still holding his hand in yours.

After dinner the two of you walked around the temple, “(Y/N).” he said. You smiled looking at him. You were so glad you had him. You looked at him, his arms were bare and you could see the bright red handprint on his forearm, causing your smile to widen.

“Yes Sokka” You hummed out, looking him in his eyes.

“Please don’t leave me again” He gulped and looked down at his feet. In this moment he looked so vulnerable and it broke you. You placed your hand on his forearm, your hand still fit perfectly on the mark. You smiled before removing your hand from his forearm and placing it on his cheek.

“Never again” the promise felt sweet on your lips. You could feel Sokka’s breathing speed up. Even though you both spent quite a bit of time together, you had never been this up close and vulnerable with one another. A smile on both of your faces as Sokka leaned in and closed the space between the two of you. His lips brushed softly against yours, you breath hitched in your throat before you pressed your lips fully against his. In this moment Sokka realized how stupid he was for hating his mark and you realized what if felt to be truely loved unconditionally.

Part three of Someone better,It’s for the best

STORY:

Sokka arrived at the gang’s apartment and his head was reeling.

“Sokka,you okay bud,” Aang asked.

“They are here. (Y/N) is here” Sokka kept repeating under his breath.

“Wow really what a coincidence” Aang said, with an abnormal amount of enthusiasm.

“They said leaving me was for the best” he could feel the sobs now in his throat.

Aang looked at him confused and Katara raised her brow, “What are you even talking about?” she asked.

“Wait who is (Y/N)?” Toph said.

“They saved Sokka on a fire nation ship the first day we all met” Aang said.

“Don’t leave out the part where she was a guard on Zuko’s ship and a firebender,” Katara said, rolling her eyes.

Sokka found his hands tracing the mark on his forearm. The red looked brighter than he remembered.

“Ohh is that who you saw in town and ran away from,” Toph jokes.

Sokka let out a weak laugh, “Yeah,”

“Wait, I’m confused” Aang said.

Sokka traced his fingers over the mark again. Aang looked down and saw the bright red marks. A sudden realization hit him. They were Sokka’s soulmate.

“Oh,” was all he managed to get out. He looked at the face of the rest of the group. Both Katara and Toph looked confused. Sokka looked at Aang and saw the realization in his eyes.

“They are your…” Aang couldn’t find the right words but Sokka nodded, “They are”

“They are your what?” Toph said.

“Soulmate, (Y/N) is my soulmate,” Sokka said, rubbing the mark.

“Oh, how could i have been so stupid” Katara muttered.

“What are you on about?” Sokka said.

“I think I may know why (Y/N) left,” Katara said feeling an overwhelming amount of guilt, “that day at camp we were talking about soulmate and I may have brought up Sokka hating his”

“You did what?” Sokka said, shocked.

“We were on the topic of her soulmate being in the water tribe and I guess I just didn’t realize, I’m sorry”

“It’s okay.” Sokka huffed, “I just need to find a way to get her to realize that we should be together”

The plan they all came up with was for Sokka to spend as much time around you and wear you down. Now you spent most of the days baking and watching Sokka eat whatever he bought and getting annoyed at his attempts to flirt with you. On the fifth day of him doing this you decided to talk to him.

“Why are you here?” You asked.

“I like the pastries?” Sokka said, you rolled your eyes, “So I found out why you left,”

“Yeah I told you it was for the best,” you scoffed.

“No I meant I know what Katara told you,” He said, looking into your eyes, “I know she told you I hated my mark but I just wanted to say that I don’t anymore,” Your eyebrows raised as you wiped down a table.

“I’m glad you dont hate it,” Sokka looked so hopeful but you couldn’t, “I still think that us being apart is for the best”

“Why?” he asked.

“I…,” you stammered, “I was on the wrong side for so long. You wouldn’t believe the things they tell you in the fire nation. I’m just not good enough for you.” You inhaled a deep breath looking at him.

“You should find someone else, someone better than me, better for you” you said. You avoided eye contact with him.

“There is no one better than you” those words fell from his lips and you could feel the walls you had built start to break. Sokka had placed his hand under your chin, making you make eye contact with you, “No one”

You let your wall crumble as you wrapped your arms around his neck. He pulled you close to him, a smile spreading on his face as he felt the warmth of your body pressed against him.

You continued to work at the bakery and Sokka continued coming into see, dragging you to see Aang and the rest of the gang almost every afternoon. He helped you clean up after closing. The both of you grew to know each other more and enjoy each other’s company. You spent your day off with Katara since Sokka went to go see his dad.

“What do you say, (Y/N). A cup of tea before we get back to the earth king?” Katara said to you.

“Sure” You mumbled

“Table for two,” Katara said before you both spotted him, Prince Zuko serving tea. Your breathing sped up but you were frozen in place. Katara grabbed your hand before running in the opposite direction.

The two of you run before Katara sees someone she recognizes, “Thank goodness, you’re here Suki.” she said to three girls in makeup, “Something terrible is going on. The fire nation has infiltrated the city. I saw Prince Zuko and his uncle. We have to tell the earth king right away”

“Oh, don’t worry. I’ll be sure to let him know.” A voice you instantly recognized, Azula. You watch as Ty Lee attacks Katara and Mai attacks you before knocking you out.

You woke up next to Katara in a cave full of crystals you both started pacing around before a door opened and a person was thrown in.

“Zuko!” Katara said. You knelt down and attempted to help the prince to his feet.

“(Y/N),” he said, confused but before you could even get a word in Katara spoke. The two had quite the argument. Which was mainly just Katara yelling and making wild accusations as Zuko remained silent. You zoned out and stared at a wall while they yelled at one another or whatever.

You were grateful when Iroh and Aang showed up and you didn’t have to hear anymore of it. You, Aang, and Katara went to leave the cave when Azula attacked the three of you. You stood behind them as they used waterbending to defend themselves. Zuko showed up soon after and joined azula in the fight. You and Katara ended up fighting Zuko.

You and Katara were surrounded by the Dai li agents when you saw Aang rise up with glowing eyes and in a matter of seconds you heard as the lighting hit him and he fell to the ground as Katara went to help him.

You stayed behind to help Iroh hold back Zuko and Azula so that Katara could help Aang. The Dai li managed to encapsulate both of you in crystals as Katara and Aang escaped.

“Sorry, Sokka” you muttered under your breath and you and Iroh were arrested.

The next morning when Sokka realised you weren’t there he assumed you were off with Katara somewhere. When Katara showed up and you were nowhere to be seen, he didn’t know what he should feel.

“Hey Katara. Have you seen, (Y/N)?” He asked. Katara was confused about the concern in his voice but decided to ignore it.

“No, maybe she just wandered off?” She suggested as she shrugged her shoulders.

“Yeah” he said, nodding his head. He couldn’t ignore the pit in his stomach. It wasn’t until they had fully packed up the camp that Sokka realized you had left and you had no intentions of coming back.

“Sokka come on, we have to go,” Katara said.

“Yeah, I’m coming. Also do we have anything to eat? I’m starving” He said, trying to brighten his mood. Aang and Katara let out a laugh at his comment but the worry didn’t fade from Katara’s eyes.

A few nights later, Sokka was staring at the stars, when Katara asked if he was okay.

“Yeah, why do you think (Y/N) left?” Sokka said aloud even though he knew Katara wouldn’t know the answer.

“Maybe she thought it would be better,” Katara suggested.

“Some soulmate she is” Sokka mumbled under his breath, turning to face away from Katara.

“Hmm?” Katara said not hearing what Sokka had said.

“It’s nothing,” he grumbled before closing his eyes hoping to get some sleep. That night you filled his dreams, the way your eyes looked when you grabbed his wrist the first time stopping him from hitting you. He woke up in the morning feeling like he hadn’t slept a wink.

Sokka spent most of his time with Aang and Katara trying not to think about you. He tried everything from joking around to flirting with other girls. He thought when he met Yue, he would be able to forget you. For a while, the thought of you had been pushed into the background. You were always there just never the only thought in his head anymore. The walks during the night with Yue, helped fade the memories of you but when she left him, you flooded his thoughts once again. When Yue turned into the moon, his thoughts were once again filled with you. He didn’t understand how he knew you for less than a day and you managed to fill his thoughts every moment of everyday.

Since you had left Sokka you had been wandering in the earth kingdom. You managed to get into Ba Sing Se as a refugee since you were still on the run for betraying the fire nation. You managed to find work in a small family owned bakery and that’s where you spent most of your days. They paid you a small sum and offered you a bed in exchange you baked and cleaned and watched their youngest child when needed. You grew to love it in Ba Sing Se and you thought you could be happy here until one day you heard.

“Sokka, why is you heart racing?” A young girl yelled causing you to turn your head in the direction of the noise. Sokka, you thought. Only seeing two people running in the opposite direction hand and hand. It was weird but not the weirdest thing you’ve seen.

Sokka was shocked when he saw you and he could feel his heartbeat in his fingertip. He looked at you and he was thinking about how cute you looked in your apron, holding a small child on your hip. He was thinking about approaching you until toph screamed something and he grabbed her hand and ran the opposite direction. The next couple of days he just watched you. He was too nervous to approach you and he knew what he was doing was creepy but he couldn’t help himself.

The next couple of days you could feel eyes on you, you grew increasingly suspicious that someone was following. You wrote a note to the family you were staying with that you were going to the shop before grabbing a basket and going on your way. The whole way you could hear the same footsteps behind you following you wherever you went. You quickly turned down an alley only to hear the same footsteps behind you.

Within seconds you had the person pressed against a wall and a knife pressed to their throat.

“This is not what I expected,” the voice drifted into your ears like a melody.

“Sokka, What the hell. I could have hurt you” You said pulling the knife away from his throat. He hand reached up to his neck.

“Yeah, I could tell,” he said.

“What are you doing here and why are you following me.” you asked, taking a step back.

“I am here looking for Appa with the gang and I couldn’t believe it was you” He said, taking a step closer to you.

“Well it is me, I should be getting back,” You say, turning you back to him and starting to walk away. Before a hand grabbed your wrist.

“(Y/N), why did you leave” he said so quietly, you could hear the pain behind it.

“Let me go, Sokka,” you said through gritted teeth. You could feel tears starting to form in your eyes when he let go of your wrist.

“Before you leave me again, Could you have the decency to at least tell me why.” Sokka begged, “Please just tell me.”

“It’s for the best,” You said through tears as you heard Sokka soft sniffles behind you, “I’m sorry it just is”

You left him there standing in the alley but this time he was determined not to lose you again.

Since Sokka was young he hated the mark on his forearm, the mark of his soulmate. Small red hand print was placed on his forearm, he had tried to scratch it off, he once tried to burn it off but katara caught him before he could. He had just decided to cover them the best he could. He felt ashamed, how could he ever fall for someone from the nation responsible for his mother’s death. The nation who was trying to conquer the world. As the years went on Sokka’s hatred of the fire nation grew.

In the fire nation, you were training to be a guard since you could remember your father forced you to practice your firebending for hours on end. By the time you’re fourteen you are told you are joining the prince during his banishment to protect him, he had been banished for a year and a half and needed another guard. You accepted the position, glad to leave the fire nation and see some of the world.

Now it is another year and a half later and you stand on the deck of the ship watching the prince’s uncle train him, when there was a beam of light, which Zuko claimed to be the avatar and told the crew to go to it. You readied yourself for whatever Zuko had planned. Putting on the armour you had adjusted to show the blue handprint on your upper arm. The fire nation had a law requiring all soulmate marks be shown. You stared at the blue mark for a moment knowing that most people in the fire nation would be ashamed to hold a mark of anything other than the fire nation. You had never really cared and wondered if your soulmate cared.

You had been instructed to stay on the ship with General Iroh. You were shocked when you saw Zuko returning to the ship with a small twelve year-old boy. You were even more shocked when you heard the voice of another guard stating that the avatar had escaped. You watched the scene unfold mostly hidden as the avatar fought Zuko and as a flying bison came into view, with two blue figures. You gasped when you saw the avatar fall into the water and come out with glowing eyes. The avatar had managed to knock out all the crew that were attacking him and knock Zuko off the ship.

The two people that were on the flying bison came next to the avatar. You could barely hear their conversation.

“Hey, Katara,” the avatar said looking at the girl.

“Hey, Sokka,” he said looking at the water tribe boy, “Thanks for coming”

“Well,” Sokka said, “I couldn’t let you have all the glory.” you let out a small laugh but the three of them don’t seem to notice you.

“I dropped my staff,” the avatar said and Sokka got up to grab it. You watched as prince Zuko attempted to pull himself up with the staff. Katar helped the avatar onto the bison just as some of the crew was coming to. She tried to water bend at them but froze sokka feet to the ground instead. Within seconds, you are running toward him. As you get closer to him he swings his boomerang at you. You grab his forearm, stopping the assault before he swings the avatars staff at you. His face was filled with an expression you could only describe as shock and horror. You released your grip on his arm.

“Just let me help,” you place your hand on the ice, warming it til it melted away. In that time Katara had managed to freeze the other guards. They had all climbed on to the bison before you felt a hand on my upper arm, pull you up just as Zuko was pulling himself on the deck of the ship. Everything happened so fast you could barely keep up. Sokka had pulled you onto the bison, Appa.

Later in the night at the camp the four of you had setup, you sat by the fire you had started. Aang and Katara had already gone to sleep but you were kept awake with the thought of your family. Even though you knew that they didn’t care about you most of the time, you still wondered how they would react,

“Hey,” you heard a voice behind, turning your head slightly to see Sokka taking a seat next to you, “thanks for earlier,”

“It was nothing,” you simply responded.

“Also,” he said, taking a deep breath, “Sorry for almost hitting you. I didn’t know you were trying to help”

“I know it probably weird to ask but um what.. Uh, where is your soulmate mark?” you could feel the blush on your cheeks as you touched the blue mark on your upper arms.

“Oh,” he said fiddling with the sleeve of his shirt before pushing it up. Showing a bright red handprint where you had grabbed him earlier.

“So your my, um we are soulmates” you said. His eyebrows raised.

“When you tried to hit me, I stopped you like this,” you said grabbing his forearm like you had done earlier in the day. Your hand fit perfectly with the handprint on his arm. His face heated up as he looked down at your upper arm and placed his hand on the handprint you had on your upper arm.

“When I grabbed you to pull you onto Appa” he said.

“Yeah, Why did you? Pull me onto Appa I mean” you gulped, looking back at the fire.

“I don’t know. I wasn’t really thinking at first but i just felt like you needed to come with us,” he said, looking at the fire as well.

“I was worried that something bad was going to happen to you,” He admitted, “because you helped me.”

“I guess I didn’t want anything bad to happen to you,” he said before getting up, “we should both get some sleep”

His hand was held out in front of you offering to help you up. You place your warm hand in his cold one, “Yeah we should”

The next morning you woke up feeling warm, you helped Katara fix breakfast. She eyed your soulmate mark as you did you tried not to pay attention to it.

“So your soulmate is in the water tribe?” she asked.

“Yeah,” you said a blush on your cheeks.

“How does your family feel about that?” you knew she was just trying to make small talk but it pulled on your heart a little.

“Disappointed like I could control it,” you said looking down at your hands.

“Sokka hates his,” SHe said. Your eyebrows furrow, Hated? He hated it, you thought.

“Really?” you said trying to act like it didn’t bother you.

“Yeah, he is ashamed because the fire nation killed our mom.” she explained.

“Oh” you could feel the tears in your eyes when Sokka came up to you and placed his hand on your shoulder, “you okay?” he asked. You just nodded. You knew Sokka didn’t want you as his soulmate. He wanted someone from the water tribe probably, he would have settled with someone from the earth kingdom but you were part of the nation that had caused so much pain.

The next time you helped set up camp and while everyone was asleep you slipped away to go on your own adventure. You did take one last look at the three of them as a tear fell down you cheek

“I hope you find someone better” you looked down at the sleeping Sokka before walking into the distance.

“Hakoda, come here” Sokka chases the boy in circles, “I’m going to get you,”

Sokka grabs the boy, throwing him over his shoulder. The boy burst out in laughter as Sokka began to tickle him. Watching from the window of your home with a smile on your face. Sokka had his hair down with a light snow dusting.

No matter how much you loved his wolf’s tail, nothing was more handsome than the way his hair falls and frames his face. Sokka picked up your four-year-old son swinging him around in the air.

“Mommy, I finished with my chores, Can I go play now?” Your daughter Yuka, runs in the room. Your eight-year-old daughter standing in front of you pointing to the cut veggies. You looked and nodded.

“Yes, go on. Tell Daddy and Hakoda that dinner will be ready soon” You smiled and kissed her head as she put on a coat and headed out in the snow.

“Yes, Ma’am” she said before closing the door. The three of them started making snowballs. You watched as the kids teamed up against Sokka.

“Hey, you guys teamed up that’s no far,” Sokka fake pouted. The kids ignored him throwing more snowballs at him. Sokka threw a snowball at Yuka which was a distraction enough for him to scoop her up.

“Haha, I, the Evil King, have kidnapped the princess.” Yuka let out a scream as Sokka let out an evil laugh. Holding the girl above his head he spun around in a circle.

“I will save the princess,” Hakoda screamed and started to throw snowballs at Sokka, mainly hitting him in the shins. But soon Sokka took a snowball to the chest and fell back in the snow, Holding Yuka close to his chest making sure she didn’t get hurt during the fall. The snow puffed around the two of them and Sokka was covered in the

“Oh no Prince Hakoda, you have wounded me. You have managed to rescue the princess. Oh no” Sokka said before turning his head to the side and acting like he was dead. You watched as the kids began to collect snow in their hands before dropping the snow onto your husbands face and falling to the ground laughing. You watched him pull his head out from under the snow.

“Oh you should have thought before doing that,” Sokka grabbed both of the kids into his arms hoisting them over his shoulders. He walked toward the front of the house.

“(Y/N), I have captured the prisoners,” Sokka said, dropping the kids at the front door wiping the snow off their clothes.

“Hey careful with the snow, this house is not a playground you three.” you said, in a mock anger.

“Yes ma’am” Sokka said and sent you a wink.

“Well are you and the prisoners ready for dinner?” You asked. As Sokka kneeled down in front of Koda unbuttoning the coat the boy was wearing.

“Yes, Mommy,” Yuka and Koda respond.

“Well you two need to go wash up. While Daddy and I set the table” The two children run to go wash up. You and Sokka begin setting the table. He takes the chance to wrap his hands around your waist and place his head on your shoulder. You hear footsteps running toward the two of you and your two children appear in front of you.

“Sit down,” You instructed. The two kids sat at the table and Yuka began eating while Sokka helped Koda, since Koda had trouble getting the food on his spoon. The scene in front of you made your heart pound against your chest as you husband put spoonfuls of food into your son’s mouth, pretending they were airships and birds flying into his mouth. The giggles that erupted from your son and soon Sokka as well made you smile.

Once dinner was over Sokka and Koda did the dishes, which consisted of Koda sitting on the countertop and drying the dishes Sokka washed off. You were getting Yuka ready for bed brushing her hair as she sat in your lap.

“Mommy,” your daughter said sleepily, “Can daddy braid my hair?”

“You have to ask him,” you said pressing a kiss to the top of her head.

“Daddy, please braid my hair” Sokka nodded his head as he finished the dishes and sat on the floor patting his lap getting the girl to sit in his lap. He began braiding her hair, he was surprisingly good at it. Once he was done he picked up both of the kids and carried them to their room placing them on their beds.

“Now,” He said, “It is time for a story.” he sat on the edge of Koda’s bed and began to tell a random story he managed to come up with on the spot. You watched from your spot in the doorway, as the love of your life told your children the story. He did voices that made the children laugh but soon both of the children had closed their eyes and drifted off to sleep and Sokka stood off the bed. He took the time to tuck them both into their beds and placed a kiss on both of their heads.

He walked up to you at the doorway blowing out the candle that was placed by the door. He grabbed your hand and you both walked back to your room, quickly getting ready for bed knowing that in six short hours one of you kids would wake you up way too early.

“I love you,” you told him as you both got under the blankets.

“I love you too, “ you said placing a kiss on his lips, “I really love the way you act with the kids”

“I love that you gave me two beautiful and kind children,” He said, pulling you to rest your head on his chest. You embraced his smell, which was like the smell of a fireplace, the ocean, and mint tea. The smell engulfed you and warmed you to your core. You both closed your eyes and you were lulled to sleep with the sounds of his heartbeat and steady breathing.
