Summary: The reader is a skilled firebender despite her young age which allows her to become Zuko’s firebending teacher. When she feels an instant click between them, but Zuko keeps avoiding her until one day he gets into some trouble that threatens his life.

A/N: This was really fun to write, but it’s not as good as I’d like it to be, I still hope you like it nonetheless, as always feel free to leave feedback, I appreciate every like, comment and reblog

Your eyes widened as a ball of fire barreled towards your face. You leaned backwards watching the flames swirl above you, the heat slightly singing your eyebrows. Then the fire slammed into the wall behind you and dispersed.

You came back up and smirked at Zuko, his eyes narrowed and more flames dancing between his fingers. “Come on, you can do better than that” you taunted and he yelled before rushing at you aiming a punch, his fist ablaze. You reached up with your left hand and knocked his hand to the right of you. He used this momentum to move his torso to the side so his right leg could come up to hit you in the face.

You ducked under his leg and then came up kicking your left leg to hit him in the chest, however he reacted faster than you thought he would and he was able to grab your leg in the air. He pushed your leg backwards and you stumbled back, able to keep yourself from toppling backwards but when you fully regained your balance a wave of fire came crashing towards you. You were just able to put up a wall of fire to block the wave but the force knocked you backwards onto the ground and you slid back a couple of feet.

When the flames finally disappeared Zuko was standing above you, this time he was the one smirking, “How’s that for better?” You answered by swiping your legs into his making him fall to the ground, you then got up and assumed a defensive position over him, your fists aflame.

“Your better could do with some work, first of all, never assume that your opponent will give up when they are on the ground.” Zuko rolled his eyes and you extinguished your flames, extending a hand down to him to help him up.

Zuko just grunted in annoyance and waved away your hand before pushing himself up off the ground.

The sound of clapping came from behind you and you turned to see Iroh standing by the helm of the ship smiling and clapping.

“Wonderful performance you two” he praised and you put your fist under your open palm, bowing to the man.

“Thank you, General Iroh” you said.

Iroh just shook his head, “I am not a General anymore, please just call me, Iroh.” You nodded your head and turned back to Zuko to commemorate him but he was already at the door that led to the downstairs of the ship, slamming it closed behind him.

“Pay no mind to my nephew, he just…has a lot to learn” Iroh said, walking up to stand beside you.

You turned to face him, “I know, thank you Ge- I mean, Iroh,” you corrected yourself and Iroh smiled, “but I’m feeling a little tired and I think I’m going to retire to my room for a while."

He nodded and you made your way to your room. You passed Zuko’s room on the way and you raised your fist to knock on his door but then let your hand fall, deciding it was better to leave him to himself for a bit. You then walked into your room, shutting the door and then collapsing on the bed.

You stared up at the ceiling and began thinking back to when you first met Zuko. You had excelled in your classes as a firebender and as a soldier, and, despite your young age you were able to rise in the ranks of the fire nation army.

Although Iroh had been retired as a General by the time you met him, you still called him General Iroh out of respect, though he argued against it. He began mentoring you and helped you train to be one of the finest warriors Iroh had seen.

That’s why, when Zuko was banished and Iroh planned to leave with him, he asked you to come with him. You declined at first, wanting to stay in your home nation, but when Iroh sent a letter a couple of years later that Zuko had found the avatar and would need a firebending teacher you decided to take him up on that offer.

When you met Zuko for the first time you remembered looking into his fierce, golden eyes and it was like something inside of you clicked, like a piece of a puzzle.

"Zuko, this is y/n, she is going to be your new firebending teacher” Iroh said, introducing you to Zuko. Zuko stared at you with a puzzled look on his face but then he caught himself and his face regained a more neutral expression.

“Nice to meet you, y/n,” he said and then he turned to his uncle, “I have some avatar business to attend to.” He turned to you again, nodded and then he walked away.

“Does he not like me or something?” you asked.

“Of course not, my nephew just takes a bit to warm up to people, I’m sure in a couple of days you two will get along swimmingly."

It had been a couple of weeks since then and Zuko still hadn’t warmed up to you, in fact you rarely ever saw him unless it was when you were training him, even then he still would barely look you in the eyes. You wondered if you had done something wrong and just wished Zuko would talk to you about it.

You were brought out of your thoughts when you heard a knock on your door, you sat up in your bed, "Come in."

Iroh opened the door, "We were going to stop soon and go to the market to get some more supplies, did you want to come with us?"

"No, thank you, I think I’ll stay behind and get some more firebending practice."

Iroh raised one of his eyebrows, "Are you sure? I hear they have delicious hotcakes there."

You laughed, "I’m sure, Iroh, go, enjoy yourself.” Iroh then shrugged and left the room, closing the door behind him.

It had been a couple of hours and Zuko and Iroh still weren’t back, you were beginning to worry and you wondered if you should go out and look for them. You walked up from your room to the deck of the ship and were surprised to see two figures in the distance walking towards the ship.

You squinted and realized that it was Iroh and Zuko, but Zuko has leaning against Iroh for support and as he got closer you saw his face was drained of any color and his hand attempted to cover his stomach which was steadily oozing crimson blood.

“Shit” you muttered to yourself.

You ran down the ramp that was extended off the ship and raced towards the hobbling figures.

“What happened?!” you exclaimed.

“There was a fight, we were outmatched” Iroh explained, . You tried to loop your arm under Zuko’s other arm but he cried out in pain so you quickly let him go.

“We won’t be able to make it to the ship, lay him down here.” You put your hand under his head and laid him gently down on the ground. You took off your over-shirt and balled it together removing his hand and quickly pressing it to his wound to stop the bleeding.

From the quick glance at Zuko’s wound it did not look good and he had lost a lot of blood. Zuko groaned, his eyes fluttering open and closed as if he were fighting to stay awake.

“Come on, Zuko, you’re going to be okay, I promise” you said, trying to think of something, anything to do to help him. Zuko gave a small exhale, his breathing then stopping and his eyes stopped fluttering and completely closed.

“No, no, no, no! You can’t leave, wake up!” you cried, grabbing Zuko’s limp body and holding him close to your body in a tight hug. You rocked back and forth, tears streaming down your face.

Suddenly there was a painful burst of energy that erupted in your heart that began to spread down your arms and to your hands. A bright, yellow glow shined from your hands. You tried to pull your hands from Zuko’s back but it was like they were glued to him.

Then the glow faded and the pain stopped. Zuko inhaled sharply, coughing hoarsely and he pulled away from your embrace, a puzzled look on his face.

“Zuko, you’re okay! But..how?” you said, looking at your now normal hands and then at Iroh who gave you a look that said, I’ll explain later.

“What do you remember, Zuko?” his uncle asked. Zuko blinked, thinking for a moment before starting to answer.

“We were at the market, there was this man.. he was getting robbed, I tried to help him, but there were too many of them and I got stabbed!” he said with revelation at the end. He immediately reached down and searched his abdomen for the wound.

He looked up at you, his eyebrows furrowed, “What happened?"

"I..I think I healed you” you said.

Zuko opened his mouth to ask another question but Iroh interrupted him.

“I think that’s enough questions for now, I’ll explain later, right now I’m just glad you’re okay.” Zuko looked gratefully at his uncle and went to stand up but his knees buckled and he almost fell backwards but you caught him.

“Be careful, even though you’re wound is healed, you still lost a lot of blood and I don’t think I was able to heal you all of the way, you’ll need to take it easy.” You and Iroh helped Zuko onto the ship and you got the ship moving again, you wanted to be far away from that place.

It had been a couple of hours and you were able to clean the blood off of you and change, but you felt an immense amount of fatigue. Your curiosity of what happened earlier staved of your tiredness and you went to go find Iroh.

“Ah, y/n, how are you feeling?” Iroh remarked when he saw you walking up to him. He was sitting at a table on the deck with a cup of tea.

“I don’t know, I feel..drained. In fact that was what I was going to ask you about, what happened earlier?” You asked.

Iroh set his tea down and gestured for you to sit in the chair that was directly across from him.

“The moment I saw that glowing light I knew exactly what had happened.” He paused, pouring you a cup of tea and setting it in front of you.

“What do you know about soulmates?” he asked.

“Not much really, do you think Zuko and I are soulmates?” you asked, your face gone practically slack with the incredulity of Iroh’s theory.

He nodded at you solemnly, “Yes, I do. Soulmates are essentially two halves of a whole, they are two people that complete each other like puzzle pieces fitting together."

Suddenly that feeling that you felt when you first laid eyes on Zuko made sense and you wondered if Zuko had felt it too, which would explain why he looked at you so weird the first time he saw you.

"I had heard stories about people with a soulmate bond so strong that they are able to heal each other by giving each other some of their life force. Even I didn’t think it was true, until today. That’s why you were able to heal Zuko, that light was you transferring your life force to Zuko. That’s probably why you feel so drained"

You sat there, in complete shock, you didn’t know what to say. "Well, uh…thank you, Iroh, I think I’m going to go talk to Zuko now."

He gave a single nod and you went to go talk to Zuko. You had no idea what you were going to say, you had barely talked to Zuko and he had made sort of a habit to avoid you so you didn’t even know if he was going to listen. You sighed, finally deciding to just knock on his door. You raised your fist and knocked twice on his door.

"Come in” you heard him say.

You walked in to see him sitting on his bed, the map of where the avatar was spotted was sitting in his lap.

“Are you, um, feeling better?” you asked.

He gave a half-smile, “Uh, yeah, thank you for healing me."

You nodded, "You’re welcome."

It was silent for a moment, awkwardness practically filling the room. "So, did Iroh tell you that we’re-"

"Yeah, well, no, he didn’t tell me, but I knew from the moment I met you."

"Oh,” you said, you didn’t know what to make of that statement, he knew and he didn’t tell you? What if you never found out, was he ever going to tell you?

“Yeah, my uncle had talked about soulmates before and so I just put two and two together."

You crossed your arms and glared at Zuko, "Were you ever going to tell me?"

Zuko looked up at you sheepishly, "Well, I was eventually going to bring it up, but my number one priority is finding the avatar and I didn’t want the whole soulmate thing to get in the way."

Your look softened slightly. You could understand where Zuko was coming from, his father had banished him and his only hope at getting his life back to how it was was to capture the avatar.

"So that’s why you avoided me."

"Yeah, uh, sorry about that, I promise I won’t do it anymore."

You gave a small nose exhale and you smiled and shook your head slightly.

"What’s so funny?” he asked.

“Nothing, I just never thought that the Fire Lord’s son would be my soulmate."

He smiled slightly before retorting, "Well, I never thought my soulmate would be my firebending teacher."

You laughed and Zuko’s smile widened and his usually fierce eyes seemed to sparkle with a small hint of humor.

Warning: Assault

Summary: Reader is walking home when they are attacked by thugs, then a mysterious stranger in a blue mask saves her, leaving without a word.

A/N: This is my first Zuko fic so I hope you guys like it and don’t be afraid to show it some love, I appreciate every comment, like or reblog I get, hope you enjoy

You pulled your arms closer to your body as the wind blew stronger sending chills down your spine. It was nearing midnight and so the streets of Ba Sing Se were eerily empty, spare for the dim glow of lanterns that lined the walls.

You were walking home from the antique shop where you worked, closing up shop had taken a little longer than you anticipated. One particular customer simply needed to stay past closing time to pick the perfect antique table for their bedroom. You hoped their table was worth you walking home, in the dark, alone.

You were almost home when you heard footsteps coming from behind you. Your heartbeat began to thump in your ears, your breathing became more erratic.

You walked slightly faster, trying to assure yourself that they weren’t following you, you were making this up.

The footsteps sped up with your pace.

You glanced over your shoulder to see three guys following you, one of the guys was holding something that glinted slightly from the glow from the lanterns, it was a knife. That sent a jolt of fear rippling down your body and you quickened your pace even more, hoping that you could make it to your house before those guys made it to you.

You glanced back again and they were gaining on you, fast. Then, you ran. You only made it a few feet before one of the men grabbed your shirt and yanked you back.

You tumbled onto the hard cobblestone, your head colliding with the unforgiving ground. Your vision gathered black spots and your thoughts slowly became overtaken by a loud buzz. You could feel yourself being dragged backwards and as your vision slowly began to clear you realized you were being dragged into an alley.

Through the drone that clouded your thoughts you managed to realize that you needed to act now. You began to scream but were cut off by someone’s hand to your mouth and a knife to your throat.

“If you scream again, I will slit your throat” they hissed harshly.

You nodded and they took their hand and the knife away. They picked you up by your shirt and stood you up on the wall, the brick rubbing harshly against your exposed skin. A tear fell from your eye and one of the men wiped it away with their thumb.

“Now don’t cry, little girl” he said and the other two men laughed.

You squeezed your eyes shut, you wanted to be anywhere but here, anytime. Please, you begged to whatever higher power was listening. Your eyes flew open when you heard the sound of metal falling onto the pavement.

“Who’s there?” called one of the men, brandishing his knife. No one answered but the swirling of the wind.

“I’ll go and check, you two keep an eye on the girl.” He walked out of the alley and turned the corner. It was silent for a moment but then you heard a faint yell and what sounded like metal clanging on metal.

Then you watched as the man was thrown into the wall, screaming as he flew through the air. He crumpled onto the ground like a sack of potatoes.

One of the men gave a battle cry and began running down the alley and turned the corner sharply. All you could hear was the sound of repeated punching and the occasional grunt.

Your eyes widened as you saw a beaten and bloodied version of the man you just saw running down the alley trying to crawl away but was dragged back. There was a dull thunk that sounded like the hilt of a sword hitting  someone’s head and then the sound of a body falling to the ground.

The last man left pulled out a knife, grabbing you off the wall and pulling you in front of him. He pressed the knife firmly to your neck but you could feel that his hand was shaking.

“Come out now and I won’t hurt her” the man said, his voice shaking more than his hand. From around the corner walked a man with a blue mask that grinned almost eerily. He was holding two swords, flecked with blood.

The blue-masked man moved forward but stopped when the man pressed the knife harder into your neck. You inhaled sharply through your nose and bit your lip to keep from crying out.

“Don’t move any closer, and drop those swords.” The masked man gently laid down his swords. Before you could even register anything the masked man threw a knife, hidden in his boot, and struck the man holding you right through his temple.

He toppled backwards and the knife he was holding clattered to the ground. You looked back at his body in shock and then back at the masked man.

“I- thank you” you said. The masked man simply bowed his head at you and then he ran off into the darkness and you were alone, again. You managed to stumble all the way back to your house and laid right down on your bed.

You stared at the ceiling as the night’s events replayed in your head over and over again. You tried to think of something else but it was like it was blocked off, you were stuck. You lay awake the whole night, every time you closed your eyes you saw their faces and their laughs echoed tauntingly in your ears.

The sun drifted through your curtains, the light shining onto your bleary eyes. Groaning you pulled yourself up into a sitting position on your bed, your head was pounding and your whole body ached. All that you wanted was a good cup of tea to settle you down but when you got up to look you had none left.

You decided that you would go to the place down the street which you heard had great tea. You got dressed and tried to make yourself look as presentable as possible before you made your way to the tea shop.

Even with the sun hanging in the sky the streets still appeared ominous to you. Each basket could hold an armed man and each alley reminded you of the night before. You shook your head, squeezing your eyes shut and breathing out to calm yourself down and then breathing in while opening your eyes again.

You just have to make it to the tea shop, you assured yourself. With more self-pep talking you were able to make it to the tea shop, The Pao Family Tea House.

Just breathing in the aroma made the tenseness in your body melt away. You stepped in the shop and were greeted by a nice old man who led you to your table.

“What kind of tea would you like?” he asked cheerfully.

“Ginseng, please."

He grinned and said, "Good choice, ginseng tea is my favorite, my nephew will be back with your tea soon."

"Thank you” you said and he left to go prepare the tea. Soon after a young man came out of the kitchen with a tray of tea in his hand. He handed out the tea to all of the other tables, the last cup of tea being you.

When he came up to your table he looked slightly surprised for a moment but then caught himself and his face went back to a relaxed position.

“Here’s your tea” he said, placing the tea on the table and then he quickly turned around and began walking the other way.

“You kind of seem familiar, do I know you from somewhere?” you asked, he did remind you of someone and you just couldn’t place it and, judging from his reaction of his surprise when he saw you, he probably knew you too. He turned around again to face you.

“What? No, I’ve never met you before, what are you talking about?” he said in a nervous voice that got suspiciously higher than it was before.

“No, I’m sure I recognize you from somewhere and you looked like you recognized me when you first saw me."

The young man smiled awkwardly and said, "Sorry, you must be mistaken, enjoy your tea!” Then he quickly walked away before you could even open your mouth to respond. You then shrugged and began to enjoy your tea, which was better than any tea you had ever tasted before.

Once you had finished your tea you were feeling much better than you had last night, in fact you were beginning to think going back to bed wasn’t such a bad idea. You paid your bill and then left the tea shop feeling much more relaxed than when you came in.

You were beginning to walk home when you heard the old man and the young man from the tea shop talking from the window that led down the alley. You would have ignored it but then you heard two words that piqued your interest, blue mask. You began walking closer so you could hear their conversation better.

“I’m telling you, uncle, the girl knows, she was in the tea shop, the one I saved last night from those thugs” the young man said in a worried voice.

“I wouldn’t worry about it, you were wearing your blue mask so she can’t have possibly actually known who you are” the old man reassured him.

“Do you really think so?"

"Yes, now go get that tea that table three ordered, that woman is not going to be very happy that it’s taking this long.” The young man sighed,

“Yes, uncle."

You were left stunned in an alley, again.

That man saved you and he wanted to hide it? Why? About a million thoughts were racing through your head. I need to go back into that tea shop and thank him, you rationalized. You walked back into the tea shop and were greeted by the old man again.

"Back for some more tea?” he asked.

“Actually, I’m here to see your nephew” you said and the man’s expression changed to a more sly look.

“Oh, I see” he said, winking at you. You’re face lit with realization at what this man thought you meant and you began to explain yourself when he cut you off.

“No need to explain yourself, he’s in the back organizing some shelves.”

You opened your mouth to tell him why you were actually here but you decided against it, closing your mouth and nodding your head at him thankfully and then you made your way to the back.

Iroh sighed and shook his head as walked away, “Young love."

You walked down the hallway to where a door was open, you walked inside to see rows of shelves and the young man on a ladder putting more boxes on a shelf.

"Hello?” you asked and the young man jumped, dropping the boxes he was holding and they came tumbling to the ground.

He turned to see you and said, “What are you doing back here, this is for employees only."

"Well, your uncle said that I could find you back here."

The young man muttered under his breath some choice words about his uncle. He then climbed down the ladder and started picking up the boxes, once he had them all in his arms again he turned to you and said, "Sorry, but I’m really busy, maybe you could come back later and ask me your question then."

He started to climb the ladder again when you asked, "Even if it’s about last night when you saved me in that blue mask?"

He dropped the boxes again and whipped his head around to face you, completely in shock.

"I- I didn’t save you last night, who told you that?” he said as he desperately tried to come up with an excuse, his face turned more serious, “whoever said that was lying."

You looked up at him dubiously, "Well, you need to get your facts straight because that’s not what you told your uncle just a couple minutes ago."

His shoulders fell and he looked defeated, "You heard that?” You nodded and he climbed down the ladder again.

“Why didn’t you tell me it was you?” He looked around the shelves as if looking for an answer.

“Well.. not everyone agrees with what I do and I don’t want to ruin the life me and my uncle have built for ourselves here. I’m sorry for not telling you."

Your look softened and suddenly you felt very guilty. "No, I’m the one who should be sorry, you saved my life and here I am trying to ruin it."

He smiled halfheartedly at you and picked the boxes up again, "Well, I guess I have to get to work again."

"Oh, right, um, of course, and don’t worry I won’t tell anyone about your secret.” He nodded and began climbing the ladder again. You began leaving the room when you turned on your heel to face him.

“Sorry, one last thing” you said and he turned around again, looking slightly exasperated.

“Thank you."

He smiled and nodded his head to say you’re welcome. You then walked away, a small smile tugging on your lips and you couldn’t see it but Zuko had one as well.

You were finally able to walk back to your house and you collapsed onto your bed, falling asleep almost immediately. It was going to take a lot of time and healing but you felt you were going to be alright, and you had almost all of it owed to one Blue Spirit.

the screams & laugher of your grandchildren now filled your normally quiet home. as you fixed a plate of cookies & tea, you heard the pattering of little feet approaching.

“grandma!”

you turned your attention to the little monster below you. he was grabbing at your robes with puppy-dog eyes.

“what is it, dear?” you placed a hand on tio’s head.

“tell overlord sokka to play with me~”

you rolled your eyes, picked up the little boy, & made your way into the living room. your husband sat on the floor, entertaining your granddaughter with a handmade puppet.

“sokka,” you placed a hand on your hip; the other still holding up tio. “how many times have i told you to not make the kids call you ‘overlord’?”

“i have no idea what you’re talking about.”

“no, you did say th-“

just as your granddaughter was about to speak, sokka slapped a hand over her mouth. he gave a large apologetic smile. you could see his younger self underneath the wrinkles & freckles. his new sunburn from working in the garden gave him a slight pink glow.

the hand slapped over neena’s mouth was also speckled with sunspots. but it was just as strong as it was when you were younger. you always told him to slow down, but he never wanted to be a “fragile old man”.

sokka was still as handsome as he was when you met. & now the streak of white in his long wolftail added to that.

“mhm,” you hummed & placed tio on the floor.

“grandma! grandma!” neena pushed away from sokka & ran for you. “grandpa won’t tell us the story behind that picture!”

you followed her little finger to see which photo she was talking about. on the wall, a small portrait of aang & sokka hung. they looked to be about twenty, & as you stared, that day came back to you.

“oh, you wanna know about grandpa & avatar aang?” you smiled. before starting the story, though, you looked at your husband. you knew talking about aang hurt him, but he nodded, silently telling you to continue.

“well, i hadn’t met grandpa yet, but aang & your grandpa were friends since he was fourteen,” you said as you took a seat next to your grandkids. “& that day was aang’s birthday. the five of us — me, grandpa, aang, aunt katara, and toph — went out to celebrate. as a joke, your grandfather dressed up as an old man & handed aang his present. it was a little trinket from the southern water tribe; a reminder of how aang & katara met.”

“a little penguin,” sokka chimed in. he smiled but kept his eyes on the floor.

“so then he & aang just talked about their childhood for the rest of the night, ignoring the rest of us.” you chuckled & remembered how irritated toph had been.

“grandpa?” tio crawled across the rug to sokka & laid in his lap. “how’d you meet grandma?”

“oh, i dunno… grandma tells it better.”

“c’mon sokka, i already told a story. it’s your turn,” you teased.

“oh, fine.” he crossed his arms. “ahem. so, of course this was after we save the world.” he paused, as if he was waiting for an applause. “anyway, everything was getting back to normal. aang & katara got married & were now rubbing it in everyone’s faces. & toph — who was supposed to be my friend! — met some guy.

“so, i was wandering around in the fire nation, alone. i was trying to see zuko, but of course he was busy.” the irritation was still fresh in his voice, even though 40 years had passed. it made you smile.

“& i was just walking around the city & then your grandma runs right into me.”

“oh my goodness. i’m so sorry!” you exclaimed. “are you okay?”

“hey! watch where you’re goi-“ sokka stopped when he looked at you.

“what was i supposed to do?” your husband interrupted himself. “she was so pretty!”

“oh no… you’re sokka, from the southern water tribe. oh, i’m so so sorry! are you okay?” you held him by the shoulders & examined him.

“umm, y-yeah. i’m okay. are you okay?”

“yeah, i was just in a rush. i’m still so sorry!”

“it’s okay, really.”

“i couldn’t concentrate! i didn’t know what else to say!”

“you’re very pretty.”

“o-oh, thank you,” you smiled.

you thought for a moment before continuing.

“hey, i was about to go to a restaurant with my friends. do you wanna join me?”

“& that was that.” sokka sat up straight, proud of his storytelling skills.

“yep. the rest is history,” you smiled & got up.

you walked over to your husband & placed a kiss on his head. you two always joked about being that old couple who said things like “the rest is history” & who made their grandchildren gag.

this is exactly what you were hoping for when you asked sokka to join you for lunch all those years ago.

you had been walking through a small earth village with sokka & aang when you heard katara scream. you three were headed back to appa, with handfuls of food & supplies. katara had stayed back because she had been talking to an old woman about the horrible state of the village.

as soon as he heard the scream, aang dropped the things in his hands. a small box cracked open as it hit the dirt. you had never seen him run so fast.

sokka & you shared a look before you followed aang’s trail. as you ran you reminded yourself not to slip up.

“watch out!” sokka pulled you by the arm. while thinking, you almost ran straight into a tree stump. “you gotta be careful, y/n.”

you watched as he reached behind him, grabbing his trusty boomerang. the determination in his eyes inspired you. whenever you watched sokka fight, you felt a sense of pride. it made you want to get up & do something. that’s one thing you really appreciated about sokka, along with a million others.

“look!” sokka pointed to two firebenders who had surrounded aang & katara. katara’s attacks against the soldiers were pointless, & aang’s bursts of air only pushed them back a couple inches.

“hey!” you yelled, trying to grab their attention.

when they turned around, you realized how big they really were. they stood about a foot taller than you & sokka, & their muscles practically burst out of their armor.

the soldier on the left released a steam of fire directed at sokka’s feet. luckily, sokka noticed the man’s hand raise. he jumped just in time & proceeded to throw his boomerang. it spun past the man’s head, making him chuckle.

sokka stood taller & crossed his arms. a whipping sound grew louder & the soldier was knocked forward. his head fell low. his feet tripped over themselves & the man fell flat on his face.

“sokka never misses!” he yelled, pointing toward the fallen soldier.

you cut off sokka’s victory dance, “umm, we still have one more guy.” you pointed to the soldier on the right who had — midway through sokka’s boomerang throw — turned back to aang & katara.

“o-oh right. of course. i knew that.”

you got katara’s attention with a small whistle. you nodded to the man laying on the ground, motioning for her to switch.

katara twisted the water she currently held around the soldier, binding him from attacking. aang, however, blew him off his feet with a small gust of wind. with one subdued, you & sokka only had to take care one more.

“well, are you gonna attack or what?” sokka poked at the man, which made you shake your head. he’s way to confident in battles…

with that, the soldier lifted his hands & let a stream of fire out. you & sokka had to jump out of the way. while you two were still on the ground, the man lifted his leg, ready to kick flames toward sokka. sokka was to stunned to react, so you had to do something quick.

you can’t let it out, you told yourself. but as many times as you said that, it didn’t stick. sokka could not get hurt.

you leaped in front of sokka as the soldier pushed the fire out. you felt the heat approaching you, & your hands became sweaty. it’s been a while. instinctively, your arms lifted to shoulder-level. you extended your hands, as if you were reaching for the fire.

you heard sokka yell something, but you didn’t register it. you were focused on the ball of fire in front of you. as it neared, you adjusted your feet. your left slid a little to the right, & your right pointed forward.

a strand of hair came out of its place. you ignored it, keeping it out of your focus. you felt the flames envelop your hands. it evapored any sweat that beaded on your palms.

taking a deep breath in, you twisted your hands. you created a small sphere with you hands, controlling the fire. you spun it two times & redirected it to the ground on your right.

then, you blasted fire from your fist. because you had the element of surprise, the soldier had no time to react. you struck his helmet, pushing him backward. you watched his figure, seeing if he’d get back up. but remained in the dirt.

you smiled at your little victory. it had been a while since you last firebended, & it felt good. but this was short lived.

you turned around, hoping to celebrate this with your team. but when you saw their faces, there was only expressions of fear & surprise.

katara stepped behind aang, who furrowed his brow. sokka, who had now scrambled to his feet, looked beyond shocked. his jaw hung open.

“y-you’re a firebender…” katara’s voice was quiet behind aang’s shoulder.

“well-“

“why didn’t you tell us?” her voice got louder with each sentence.

“erm, well-“

“where you planning something?” aang spoke up. “are you really on our side?”

while katara’s voice became hostile, aang’s was full of sadness. your friends now thought you were a traitor.

“let me explain…”

katara scoffed & walked off. aang took a moment & then followed her.

“sokka… let me explain, please?”

“why did you lie to me?” he said this without looking at you. & then he slowly walked in the direction of his sister.

tears pooled in your eyes. this is what you were trying to avoid. you knew how the fire nation had treated all three of your friends, so you didn’t want to break the trust that had blossomed. they welcomed you wholeheartedly when you first met. they let you travel with them, letting you leave that awful fire nation base.

how were you going to change this?

about an hour later, you went to go find your friends. if you could even call them that now. you felt as though you should give them some time to process before chasing after them.

when you arrived where appa had landed, he was still laying there. momo was nestled on top of his head, but he rose when you approached.

this grabbed the gaang’s attention. katara & aang sat up in the saddle. they shot you a nasty glare. meanwhile, sokka leaned against appa’s side, seemingly taking a nap.

“can i please explain?” you shuffled your feet. “even if you don’t take me back… can i please explain?”

“how could you possibly expla-“

“wait, katara,” aang interrupted. “maybe we should hear her out.”

she huffed but ultimately agreed.

you began to explain your situation, of how you were thinking of them. you didn’t want to create mistrust, but you wanted them to not be afraid of you.

“how are you any better than the fire nation?” katara shot.

it hurt, but she was right. you hated how the fire nation lied, while you did the exact same thing.

“i’m so sorry, you guys. i truly am.”

“it’s okay, y/n,” aang hopped off the saddle & stood in front of you. “you had the best intentions at heart. you were trying to protect us.”

he waved katara over, encouraging her to forgive you. she walked to you & pulled you into a hug.

“you’re still my friend, no matter what.”

“thank you, katara.” you squeezed her harder.

the three of you looked over to sokka, who didn’t move.

“sokka?” you asked, walking over to him.

he popped one eye open, looking up at you.

he slowly got to his feet, still not making eye contact. you sighed. maybe the one person’s respect you wanted the most, you wouldn’t be able to get back. you had grown so attached to sokka over the past few weeks, it was hard for you to see your life without him.

suddenly, he grabbed you by the arms & pulled you into a deep hug. his arms wrapped around your neck & shoulders, your face was now pushed into his chest. startled, it took you a second to hug him back. it was so warm & comforting.

“this is our first hug,” you remarked, not knowing what to say.

“shush. i’m trying to hug you.”

“sokka… i’m sor-“

“i don’t care. just… next time you do something stupid like that, don’t wait so long to come back. i thought you had left.”

“ughhhhhhh.” the gaang let out a collective moan as appa shifted his weight to the left, causing turbulence.

“appa, what’s up buddy?” aang bent down from appa’s neck. he looks in appa’s eyes to see that tired had glazed over his pupils. “uh oh. guys!” aang turns back to you & the rest of the group. “we gotta make a pit stop. appa’s really~ tired.”

you & toph let out a sigh of relief. this had been the longest flight of this entire summer. plus, it had gotten cold that high up in the clouds.

“let’s go to a beach!” katara suggested, hoping to get some water bending practice in.

“no! we’ve gone to three beaches already in the past month! you do realize i can’t have fun when i don’t know where i am, right?” toph interjected.

sokka saw a frown on his sister’s face but chose toph’s side anyways: “toph’s right, katara. maybe we should go somewhere else.”

aang agreed & with that, appa flew down to a clearing in a secluded woods. it was still cold, but the grass & dirt below retained some heat. the grass was also soft & green as could be. the surrounding pine trees towered over, pine needles rattling in the breeze.

when appa landed, he dozed off immediately. toph & momo decided to make dirt castles, & aang & katara sat cross legged, talking about how nice the weather was.

just like it had been for the past two months, sokka followed you everywhere like a puppy. so he waited for you to do something before he did anything.

you touched your hair, wondering if it had been too long since you’d let it breath. since you didn’t have access to your regular hair accessories & treatments, you kept it up for the most part.

it was difficult to fight fire nation soldiers with your curls in your mouth.

when you took out your ponytail, your hair was slightly dented from the hair tie. you fluffed it up & shook your head from side to side.

“does it look good?” you faced sokka & motioned toward your head.

“y-y-yeah…” he was practically drooling over you. katara had always teased you about sokka & his “big fat crush on you” (as she put it). but him going crazy over you with your hair down only furthered that point.

as the day continued, things relaxed more than they already had. at one point, sokka sat in the grass & offered for you to do the same. wanting to make the boy blush, you laid down & placed your head in his lap.

like you planned, sokka blushed so hard you thought he’d explode.

as you settled into your new place, sokka started to play with your hair. at first it was just braiding & twirling, but then it was like you stepped into a spa. this man make you shiver. in fact, your goosebumps got goosebumps.

a few minutes later, you started to doze off. between sokka & the nice ambience, how could you not? it was beyond peaceful; it was just what the gaang needed.

when you woke up, sokka was looking over you, pushing curls behind your ears.

“hey there,” you said.

“man, your voice sounds tired,” sokka chuckled, swiping another curl from your face. “how’d you sleep?”

“really good.”

“good, i’m glad.”

his smile grew wider, which made your heart beat faster. maybe sokka wasn’t the only one with a crush…

as if he read your mind & knew what you wanted, sokka leaned down. his hand moved from your hair down to your cheeks. you hoped he didn’t feel how hot your they got.

when his lips met yours, it was totally different than any kiss you’d had before. he kissed you with such passion, it made you realize he was here all along. you could’ve kissed him ages ago. & you really really should have.

it’s never me, huh

sokka.

a man who tortured your entire existence just by breathing.

you two had grown up together in the southern water tribe. living only two huts down from him, you were able to maintain a close relationship.

but for you, it wasn’t close enough.

see, the thing was that you had a major crush on your best friend. like major. painstakingly so.

it started during the beginning of winter about four years ago. you both were still young & enjoying what little childhood you could have in the middle of a war.

after what had been a short summer, the ice began to thicken. & the first snow was approaching. the first was the only enjoyable for the tribe. both children & adults would go outside to witness it.

your mom had called out to you from the kitchen when the snow started to fall. when you heard the word “snow”, you rushed to grab your coat & shoved it over your dress & pants. you almost fell running out the door.

you told yourself you were running to sokka & katara, but you knew deep down you only wanted to see sokka & enjoy this with him. not to say you didn’t want to see katara, it’s just that you didn’t love her like you did her brother.

as you ran down the white speckled path, you saw your favorite person open their door.

“y/n!” called sokka. a wide smile spread across his face, making you stumble a little while running. “it’s snowing!”

“well duh,” katara pulled her jacket over her head as she walked out of the house.

when you made it to the pair, you huffed, enjoying seeing your breath puff up in a little cloud. you looked at your friends. you had noticed sokka’s hair was lit up by tiny snowflakes. the white in his hair made his eyes sparkle. this paired with his goofy smile just killedyou.

fast forward four years & nothing has changed.

sokka was still oblivious & laughing, while you merely stared after him.

you planned on telling him your feelings. you really did. but your fear got the better of you. what if this would ruin your friendship? what if he laughed at your confession? what if katara disapproved? there were too many variables.

but now you had a true reason to tell him.

you were on a sky bison, flying to the northern water tribe, with the avatar himself. you were literally on your way to fight a war! you just had to tell sokka. your lives were on the line.

the northern water tribe was just beautiful. it set the perfect scene for you. it was much more romantic than home. it’s pearly buildings towering over canals & lit pathways. & the sound of cracking glaciers was eery but comforting at the same time.

as the group walked through the city, you & sokka failed behind everyone. now was your chance!

“so sokka,” you began.

but he wasn’t listening. his eyes were on a nearby boat. you followed his gaze to a literal goddess. she was stunning. her white hair flowed through braids, her blue eyes were so bright you could see them from a mile away, & she stood with such an elegance that baffled you.

“she’s so pretty,” sokka drooled.

so maybe later, then.

but later didn’t happen, at least not in the northern water tribe. the girl on the boat, princess yue, stole your best friend’s heart. you watched as sokka sacrificed almost everything for her; he even fought her fiancé! & you just sat & watched.

it was heartbreaking when yue sacrificed herself for her tribe, but your heart shattered seeing sokka cry. you felt for him, you truly did. but your jealousy got the better of you. you practically cringed when sokka & yue shared their last kiss. you couldn’t bear to see that.

so you went on with being sokka’s best friend. nothing more.

but then an opportunity presented itself: the serpent’s pass.

the group volunteered to help a pregnant couple through the pass to bosing sei. a secluded, possibly dangerous mission with heartwarming undertones? what would be better than confessing your love then?

so you gathered your courage once more. this time it was your first evening on the trip. half of the group was asleep, while the rest watched the campfire. you & sokka sat on your sleeping bags, facing the cliffside.

“sokka…”

you turned towards him, the man who owned your heart. who you’d do anything for, even die for. the man who killed you everytime he smiled or laughed. who brought unlimitless joy to your life.

sokka turned away from the moon & sea, towards you.

instead of spewing the speech you had practiced for years, your body took over. you cupped his face, his cheek warming your cold hand. you then scooted towards him. you could feel his breath. he was here, right now, in front of you. all you wanted was in your grasp.

closing your eyes, you kissed him.

this is what you were waiting for all this time. it was like he let fireworks off inside you. you thought your heart was going to swell & explode. this overwhelming feeling caused you to smile so much it broke the kiss.

you opened your eyes, still smiling. & you were expecting a smile in return, but there wasn’t one.

sokka frowned & took your hand off his face. he huffed, looking back up at the moon. he started to stand.

“i’m sorry, y/n. i can’t do this right now.”

your heart broke. the pain resignated in your chest. your body reacted to this emotional turmoil as if it was a wound. you wanted to doubled over, start crying, yelling even. but you just shivered & silently wept. the tears only came one at a time, ever so slowly. regret & hurt circulated through you. it was unbearable.

how were you supposed to keep going after this?

will you do me the honor?

day three with no sleep.

you’d been counting the days since this new side adventure began. aang overheard a merchant spill about a once-in-a-lifetime meteor shower four days ago. the trip to the earth kingdom was long & arguous, so the everyone was excited for this distraction.

sure, sokka argued once in a while about timing, but after seeing how passionate the rest of the group was, he changed his tune. however, katara teased he only stopped badgering because you were the most excited out of all of your friends.

but seeing meteorites & talking about them are two different things. without the location or timing of the shower, this distraction soon became more stressful than the whole lord ozai ordeal.

each night, appa would land on a plateau or mountain, high above hindering clouds & tree lines. everyone kept their eyes peeled. you’d all sit in a circle, staring into different sections of the dark sky.

but nothing came.

“well, maybe it’s supposed to be tomorrow,” katara suggested each morning after a sleepless night.

so flash forward to day three. your eyes are bloodshot, & they hurt. aang & katara refuse to use their energy on bending. & poor sokka can barely walk, let alone say one understandable sentence.

on the verge of giving up, the gaang decided to rest in the lowlands of a nearby mountain range. it was mid-afternoon, so most of the group took light naps to gain some energy.

when you awoke a few hours later, the sun had already set. you panicked. what if you missed it? when was the next time you’d see a meteor shower?

you rose & tried to wake aang. he rolled over & muttered something garbled. poor baby.

you moved on to katara; you knew she wanted to see the shower badly. you shook & shook her, but it was no use. she was out of it.

then there was one: sokka.

it’s not that you didn’t want to be alone with sokka. you did. you really did. it’s just that you didn’t know how to be alone with him. it was always friendly between the two of you, but after a quickly shared kiss in the northern water tribe… your relationship seemed to be nothing but awkward.

there was so much unsaid. he still has that thing with suki… & did he even want to be with you like that? you two never made anything official.

but nevertheless, you weren’t going to deprive him of a potential good view. you turned away from his sister & sat next to him. he was curled up in his sleeping bag, snoring. & loud too.

you silently chuckled & moved a few strands of hair out of his face. he looked less crazy & energized when he was asleep. you traced the bridge of his nose with your finger, & then his jawline, & then his lips.

it wasn’t a bad kiss. not at all. it was actually kinda perfect. it happened before the gaang left the northern water tribe, when a straggling fire nation ship pulled up to the wall.

“i call dibs!” sokka yelled, as soon as he saw the red flag. when aang & katara gave him a look of concern, he replied, “cmon, i got this. don’t worry!”

he ran a little ways ahead, but then suddenly slowed his pace. he stopped, turned around, & made a beeline for you. because he was running, he basically crashed into you.

and before you could register what had happened, he grabbed your face & kissed you. it was soft & passionate & long overdue.

“i’ll be right back,” he said pulling away.

you had hoped he’d ask you out after dealing with the ship, but he never did. those feelings just merely lingered in confusion.

& so now you sat, outlining sokka’s face.

after realizing how weird this was, you decided just to wake him up. you were forced to do this multiple times before, so you were an expert.

you shook his shoulders, which caused him to stir. then you tickled him, making a loud laugh erupt. he immediately sat upright & begged you to stop.

you sat back admiring your triumph.

“not funny,” he said. he unzipped his sleeping bad & crawled out. “why’d you have to wake me up? it’s not even light out!” he gestured to the sky.

“well, i was going to give up on the whole meteor shower thing, but i have a good feeling about tonight.” you stood & offered your hand, which s sokka took hesitantly. “i couldnt wake the others, so it’s just us.”

you led sokka aways to a small opening in the wooded lowland. it was a perfect little circle. a few lightning bugs made way for you two. looking up, you noticed the tree line parted, allowing a good of the sky. you laid down on the grass, & sokka mimicked you.

it was silent for a couple of minutes. neither one of you knew what to say. you focused on a few constellations you recognized.

finally sokka spoke up.

“i wanna build a house.”

you laughed. “sokka, i think you need more sleep. you’re talking nonsense again.”

“no, i’m serious. i wanna build a house, maybe somewhere secluded. a little ways from town.” he didn’t look at you while he spoke, he kept his eyes on the sky above.

“okay?”

you followed a lone lightning bug across your line of view.

“&… & i want you to be there.”

what? what were you supposed to say? is he being serious?

when you didn’t respond, sokka kept going. “i wanna live with you in the house i’m gonna build. i- i want you there. a-and maybe after a while, there will be three or four mini-me’s & mini-you’s running around.”

“sokka…” you turned onto your side to face him. but he still refused to look at you. “you mean all that?”

it sounded perfect. more than perfect. a little life with sokka was all you wanted.

but what if this was a prank? was aang & katara hiding in the trees, waiting to jump out & say “ha! you thought!”?

or what if he was settling? suki wasn’t here, but you were. did he just miss her?

no, he’s not like that. is he?

the avoidance of eye contact made this worse. you couldn’t read his face. & you started to panic.

all you wanted was laying right in front of you. he was right there. it was all right there. in your grasp…

but you had your hand extended out fully. it was up to sokka to close this gap. would he quit talking & leave it to how it was? was this your fate with sokka? just meaningless conversations with underlying tension?

“of course i mean it!” he threw his whole body forward. he sat up & threw his arms up at the stars. and finally… finally he faced you. he stared right into you. and it almost seemed as if he was keeping himself from jumping to you.

“i’ve always meant it! i just didn’t know how to tell you.”

adjusting to your new life was… exciting & strange.

learning about aang’s life was fun & you liked knowing someone from a different era. you were able to ask questions you normally wouldn’t get an answer to.

katara & you became close fast. at first, she only thought of you as a book, someone to spew knowledge of the fire nation. but in the course of a few days, you bonded over everything & anything.

& appa was a kind, new friend, but riding on him was a different story… every single time you stepped into that saddle, you got nauseous.

it was four days after you joined the gaang when you had a perticularly awful flight sickness. since everyone was tired & needed some down time, you guys were going to fly to a lake in the middle of one of the nearby forests to relax.

so as sokka & aang packed the saddle, you readied yourself to fly. you looked back to the tiny village & the sweet, sweet ground, & said your goodbyes.

you grabbed tufts of appa’s soft fur & hoisted yourself into the saddle. sweat developed on your hands, but you ignored it & swiped it on your pants.

the rest of your new family hopped on & readied to lift off. as soon as you heard aang’s “yip yip!”, your stomach dropped. a lump in throat developed, making you instinctively cover your mouth with your hand. embarrassed because you thought someone saw, you quickly shoved your hand away. you didn’t want the gaang to think you were weak or useless. what would they say if you couldn’t even fly!?

you sunk into the back of the leather saddle, next to sokka. you focused on katara’s back. she leaned over appa’s neck to talk to aang. you wondered if they’d get together eventually.

appa leaned left & your stomach leaped up your throat. your body couldn’t help but react.

“hey, you okay?” sokka leaned over. him being this close seemed to make you even more nervous. this had been a common thing. whenever sokka neared you, you wanted to run & hide.

you nodded in response & force a smile.

instead of backing away like you thought he’d do, sokka scooted closer. he took one of your clammy hands in his.

“it’s okay. it took me a week to get used to it,” he chuckled. “it gets easier, promise.”

you smiled & your nerves seemed to relax. it always did seem like sokka could read your mind…

the little lake you & the gaang stumbled upon was perfect. it was surrounded by steep snow-topped mountains & green, shady trees. the water was clear & blue with lilypads scattered about.

after landing, appa found a nice shady spot on the sandy beach. while unpacking tents & supplies, you could hear him snoring.

right away, aang stripped to his shorts & jumped in the lake. he beckoned for the rest of you to join in. katara of course ran to the water. she started to throw snowball-like spheres of water at the airbender.

sokka instead reached for his sword, which he had stole from the previous town.

“this will come in handy!” he explained.

he stood next to appa & started to practice swings & stabs.

“hey, would you mind teaching me some?” you came up behind him. “i feel like i should be able to defend myself.”

that wasn’t a lie, but you also wanted to have some alone time with him. it seemed perfect. the relaxed setting, beautiful place…

“yeah but i’m not going to go easy on you just because you’re a newbie,” he laughed & swung his sword over your head. “here, hold this for a second.”

he handed you his sword, & he wandered a little into the woods. the weapon felt heavy in your hands. you admired its simple design. then sokka came back carrying a large stick on his shoulders.

“i have returned!” he bellowed, a large beaming smile on his face. “here, switch me.”

the stick definitely felt lighter, but you preferred the sword.

“okay first, we’ll start with stance.”

he demonstrated a starting stance. feet apart, hands together in front of you, knees slightly bent.

“wait, hold on.” he stabbed the sand with his sword, letting it stand as he walked behind you.

he came up behind you & wrapped his arms around you to guide yours. you tried to focus on the fake sword in your hands, but all you could think of was how you could feel sokka’s breath on your neck. he nudged your right foot with his, knocking it a few centimeters to the right.

he stared at you a moment longer, then suddenly moved away. he scratched the back of his neck.

“umm so anyways, let’s move on,” he chuckled, obviously nervous.

about an hour later, you already knew a few moves. you needed to keep practicing, of course, but now you could keep up in a fight.

you both agreed on one more round, & then it was swimming time.

you readied yourself, correcting your stance & grip. your back was to the woods, while you faced sokka & the lake. sokka lunged first, making you back away. he kept moving forward, forcing you to block & step away. only a few times did you manage to push sokka back.

this continued for a few moments until you were continually pushed back into the woods. you noticed that you had begun to enter the tree line, but you couldn’t push back.

sokka then swung from the right, making you defend with your left arm. this was your weak spot; your left side not fully worked out & developed. this caused your hand to bend backward, releasing the stick. as it clattered to the ground, sokka pushed his sword against your neck, backing you against a tree.

you held your hands up to your cheeks, smiling in defeat.

“okay, okay, you got me,” you nodded to the sword. “you can let me go now, sokka.”

he smiled, but didn’t lower his sword. in fact, he stepped closer.

“little did you know, this was a to-the-death battle!” he teased.

by know, your noses almost touched. he glanced down at your lips but didn’t dare make a move. you debated ducking under the blade, walking away, & just laughing the whole thing off.

what to do… what to do…

you panicked. sokka’s closeness clouded your mind. did he even like me? or was i just imagining things?

but you mustered up all of your bravery & leaned in. your lips touched, & sokka was taken aback. it took him a moment before leaning in & returning the kiss. he hesitated before dropping his sword & wrapping his arms around you. you responded by looping your arms around his neck. but this moment of heaven was cut short.

to your disappointment, he pulled away first.

“ha, i beat you. & i’ll beat you next time, too,” he teased & winked. he took a few steps back.

“where are you going?” you laughed & threw up your arms.

“catch me if you can!” sokka yelled as he ran toward the lake, taking off his boots & shirt on his way.

you rolled your eyes & chased after him.

that nerd.

“let’s stop here.” katara pointed past appa’s dangling feet. “we need some more food.”

“you sure?” sokka opened his eyes, coming out a light nap. he peeked over the saddle, glancing at the earth kingdom town below. “it looks like there’s a lot of fire nation.”

towards the walls of the small town, sat red carts led by ostrich-horses. blobs of maroon could be seen moving through the streets periodically.

but this was no surprise. the gaang realized that most of the western earth kingdom cities would be inhabited by fire nation. whether it be small or large, military rushed into villages, taking & destroying what they wanted.

so many times, sokka & katara had to pull aang away from these places. he wanted so badly to help those in need: protect children, give food, & release taken servants.

“i think we’ll be okay. katara’s right about the food anyways,” aang chipped in, ever the optimist. he pulled on appa’s reigns, heading down to the ground.

after walking through the town, the gaang had a sack full of food & of course sokka bought a small totem of the town. as they made their way to the town gate, someone cried out behind them.

“hey!” you yelled as you crashed down on the dirt road.

you looked up at the man who had just thrown you out. he glanced up & down the street, waiting for fire nation guards to collect you.

“you’re not going anywhere, scum.” he crossed his arms, happy with his triumph. “i cant wait until the guards get you. i’ve been waiting for this day since my wife brought you here. i should have never allowed this.”

you got up & brushed off the dust on your clothing. you noticed that the guards had not arrived, so it was now or never. you darted for the gate, not paying attention to the civilians nearby. as you drew closer, you felt freer & freer with each step. but you suddenly hit something rock-hard.

“so you’re the fire nation traitor, huh?” you looked up at what you ran into. it was a man who stood tall, & who had a ugly look on his face. you could tell he was the chief of the guard pack behind him from his uniform.

you took some steps back. as you did, the group of soldiers in front of you drew their weapons. some had spears, while others had swords. outnumbered, you accepted your fate; however, you weren’t going to go without a fight.

your thoughts of what prison life would be life were cut short by a loud “hey! over here!”.

on your right, a group of teenagers stood. they looked ready for battle. the youngest looking, a small bald boy, yelled again. they all motioned for you to run over.

a smile bloomed on your face & you made a beeline for the group. but as you started, the chief behind you grabbed your hair.

“ouch!” you fell back with your scalp stinging. you pushed at his hand, but it was no use. he started to pull you away, not caring about tears welling in your eyes.

“watch out!” the girl of the group ran toward you with her hands extended. “sokka! grab her! make it back to appa!” the water trough on the house next to you started to rattle. all of the liquid rose out & wrapped around the girl’s hands.

a water bender? what is a water bender doing here? and who or what was appa?

with a whip of the water, the chief let go of you & spun around. before scrambling to your feet, you glanced at your savior. she had long dark hair, blue eyes, & a water tribe necklace.

the boy who had been standing next to the young kid now was helping you to your feet. nothing he was saying was registering to you. he looked like the girl, & you supposed they were related.

rolling his eyes, he grabbed your hand & started running. you looked at the guards flashing past you, who were preoccupied with the water bender & now the boy. you couldn’t tell what he was doing, but you could hear loud gushes of wind.

after a few minutes of running, the walls disappeared & trees grew taller. the boy suddenly stopped & looked around. you noticed he still had a hold of your hand. maybe it was because the air was warm or because you had just been running but you could feel your face heat up.

“appa!” he shouted. the trees to the left shook & got out of the way as a large beast came of out of the woods.

you gasped. “is that a sky-bison? i thought they were extinct.”

“yep. this is appa. don’t worry, he’s way nicer than he looks.”

he led you over to the giant fluff-ball. you held out your free hand, letting appa sniff you. after aquianting yourselves, the bison let you pet him.

“you okay?” the boy asked, averting your attention from appa.

“yeah i think so,” you smiled. “thank you for helping me.”

“of course. that’s what we do,” he smirked. “save people.”

you quirked your eyebrow, waiting for him to explain.

“oh i’m sokka by the way.” he went to extend his hand but realized it was in yours. you both let go, embarrassed.

“i’m y/n.” you didn’t look up from the ground. & you waited for your blush to subside before continuing the conversation. “what’d you mean by ‘that’s what we do’? & who’s ‘we’?”

“o-oh. well that boy back there, he’s aang. he’s actually the avatar. believe it or not.” sokka scratched the back of his head. you couldn’t tell if he was embarrassed still or uncomfortable. “me & my sister are helping him learn the elements.”

“oh wow. but you guys are so young. & you’re doing this by yourselves? that’s impressive.” sokka seemed to beam at your words. “it must be nice though, to travel everywhere.”

“yeah it’s really cool. you meet so many interesting people & see cool things. hey, uh, if you don’t mind me asking… what’s up with that mean mustache guy back there?” he pointed back towards the village with his thumb.

“oh, him? he was the guy i worked for, him & his wife. i originally lived with my family in the fire nation, but as they colonized the earth kingdom, they took people to help ‘keep earth kingdom civilians in line’.” you made air-quotes with your fingers, saying what the military had said months before. “i was brought over to live in a village, but now i’m a servant to these stupid fire nation couples.”

“so you were taken from your family?” sokka asked. his voice had gotten softer.

“yeah. in a way.” you shrugged, not wanting to dwell on it.

you now noticed how handsome sokka was. his eyes were as blue as his sister’s; some hairs had been pulled out of his wolf-tail & were now framing his face. you felt your face heat up again & pretended you were interested at the rocks near your feet.

“how about you?” you asked kicking a pebble away. “what about your family?”

“uh, well my dad is fighting in the war. & my mom… she, uh, she’s gone.”

“oh, i’m so sorry.” you put your hand on his arm & offered a sympathetic smile.

just as he was about to say something, footsteps approached you two.

“hey guys!” aang waved as he walked with sokka’s sister.

“how are you? are you okay?” the girl came up to you.

you nodded & looked to aang, wondering what was coming next. were you just going to go to the next village? go back home?

“hey, umm,” aang started. “you wanna join us? i’m sure we could use some fire nation information.” he had the biggest smile you’d ever seen.

“r-really?” your eyes widened. they wanted you to come along? “are you sure?”

“of course!” he replied. the siblings looked happy & offering also, almost as if they were waiting for someone to join.

“yeah, of course i’ll join you!” you said, maybe a little too loud.
