You love Star Wars? Our Space Princess Carrie Fisher? Have you ever wanted a SAY in what Star Wars shirts get made? Here’s YOUR CHANCE! Vote for my Princess Leia REBEL ROYALTY T-Shirt Design for @HotTopic
Recently, I was contacted by some lovely people working on a press anthology on Carrie Fisher which focuses on her role as Princess Leia as well as her writing, her mental health advocacy, and the role of her Leia image in current feminist politics.
They commissioned this lovely piece, inspired by my original portrait Blessed Rebel Queen, to be the cover art for the upcoming anthology Our Blessed Rebel Queen: Carrie Fisher and Princess Leia (Wayne State University Press). Coming out in October 2021.
It was truly an honour to do this piece, to return to the origins of Blessed Rebel Queen and be reminded why I created that piece in the first place. And today, being Carrie’s birthday, seems the right time to share this piece with all of you

“I heard someone say once that many of us only seem able to find heaven by backing away from hell. And while the place that I’ve arrived at in my life may not precisely be everyone’s idea of heavenly, I could swear sometimes—I hear angels sing.”
I am very excited to share with you that you can now purchase the book “Our Blessed Rebel Queen: Essays on Carrie Fisher and Princess Leia” which I did the cover artwork for, as well as a short essay on my original painting of Blessed Rebel Queen.
This book is the first full-length exploration of Carrie Fisher’s career as actress, writer, and advocate. Fisher’s entangled relationship with the iconic Princess Leia is a focal point of this volume. The contributors offer insights into Fisher as science-fiction idol, author, feminist inspiration, and Lucasfilm commodity.
This piece remains my favourite personal commission I have ever done, commissioned by Heather Ross, the woman Carrie protected in this story. When she commissioned this piece, she wrote the statement below for everyone to know:
“Looking back through the hundreds of e-mails between Carrie and myself, I can’t help but think of the moments when we talked of nothing specific but laughed until we couldn’t breathe. There were a few moments when the topic was specific. Very specific actually. It was an embarrassing, scary and I didn’t know what to do about it kind of specific. When I needed someone to just hear me, there she was. Listening patiently at the other end of the call. I explained how this film producer picked me up for a meeting, and after getting in the car he sexually assaulted me. Me! The fat girl from Tucson, who felt repulsive enough that this sorta thing could never happen to. She was kind, soft spoken and was exactly what I needed.
A few weeks later Carrie sent me a message online that said, “I just saw *blank* at Sony studios. I knew he would probably be there, so I went to his office and personally delivered a Tiffany box wrapped with a white bow.” Naturally I asked her what was inside and she said, “It was a cow tongue from Jerry’s Famous Deli in Westwood, with a note that read, “If you ever touch my darling Heather or any other woman again, the next delivery will be something of yours in a much smaller box!”
A simple gesture confirmed what we all know, this woman was indeed a badass.
There are a few hidden messages in this beautiful piece. I had the heart necklace blessed by His Holiness the Dalai Lama when I met him in San Francisco. My mom and I then gave it to Carrie at her 50th birthday party. As for the other things, I will keep those to myself. For me Carrie was that one person besides my Grandma who I could go to when I felt broken. She could magically put my pieces together and guard me from the world.”
