1860s female archery outfit with pocket diary hanging from the belt

(source)

I remember seeing the tweet a few days ago, but it didn’t actually source their info, and I’m leery about random accounts claiming certain things. Anyway, seeing this again, I decided to try to track down a real source (since the link here is to the tweet) and got led to this instagram post from 2017: https://www.instagram.com/p/BcDcTXHFHtl/ talking about donating to help conserve pieces with the Museum of London as part of their Redressing Pleasure campaign, which was indeed a source info I needed. Searching THAT led me to this page: https://www.museumoflondon.org.uk/discover/redressing-pleasure-inside-costume-store where they talk about various pieces that are included in the campaign. Notably, here’s some more information about this particular piece:

A Victorian Archeress! It doesn’t get much better than this. This stunning ensemble was donated to the Museum of London in 1954. It was worn by Mrs Fanny Giveen (1833-63). If you know anything about her, please do get in touch. This ensemble will be our ‘performer’ in the 19th side of the gallery. Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens had ‘archery fetes’ in the 19th century, represented by this costume. We are so pleased to have an excuse to exhibit this incredible ensemble. However, we must reproduce her skirt and undersleeves and I hope to buy an original 1850s women’s archery bow, to complete the ensemble.

The article also includes several video tweets from curator Timothy Long highlighting each piece discussed. The tweet (and video) for this particular piece showing off more of the outfit and details is here:

A Victorian Archeress We need your support to complete this ensemble. We must make a skirt & undersleeves & we hope to buy an 1850s archery bow! Will you help us? https://t.co/zJQL6Vmnoapic.twitter.com/3xxKscFZsc

Thank you so much for taking the time to find the original source

Murasaki Shikibu was a writer during the Heian era of Japan, born in 973. She is most famous for writing the epic classic Tale of Genji, which is considered to be the first novel ever written. Murasaki was from an aristocratic family. She disliked men and mostly kept to herself, spending much of her time at Imperial court writing new chapters for the Tale of Genji. She passed them on to friends, who in turn copied them out and passed them on to their friends to read and copy, and it quickly became popular. Women were thought to be too stupid to learn the traditional written Chinese kanji characters and were taught phonetic kana instead. But Murasaki learned Kanji easily and taught it to the princess Shoshi in secret, causing outrage when she became empress and used it publicly. Murasaki is largely credited for developing Japanese into a written language. She earned herself the nickname “Our Lady of the Chronicles”.

I just watched a documentary about a 13-year old girl named Aishol-pan, who became the first female in 12 generations of her Kazakh family to become an eagle hunter. She was so badass and fearless that I felt inspired to draw her.

As a teen I hated Ventress. Now, I adore her. She’s so underrated and shows such fantastic character growth. I love her transition from misguided apprentice of Dooku into her own woman. Her road is uneven and jumbled, but in the end, she does the right thing.

We stan Asajj Ventress in this house.

Going on week 3 of our Fan Art Fridays! I decided to draw my favourite princess from Marco Polo to celebrate debut of season 2! This is the first time I’ve done something that’s more on the concept art side of things and it was a great learning experience. This is also the first piece I’ve done on my new cintiq! All in all it was fun to do. Looking forward to next week!

If Khutulun is unrecognizable in this piece, that’s because I took some liberties with her appearance. As much as I love Claudia Kim’s portrayal in the show, her aesthetic and costume  (while very pleasing to the audience) is not at all accurate.

Over the past 25 years, Las Patronas has fed tens of thousands of Central American migrants. Every day volunteers prepare and distribute about 300 food parcels for migrants travelling on freight trains known as La Bestia (The Beast). For many fleeing violence and poverty at home, it’s a life-saving act of kindness. (x)

Marissa Alexander released from jail, now on house arrest
January 28, 2015

Marissa Alexander, the Florida mother whose case became a rallying cry for anti-racism activists and survivors of domestic violence, was released today after three years of incarceration.

Alexander had faced up to 60 years behind bars for firing a single shot near her abusive husband, unable to convince a jury she had feared for her life. A hearing Tuesday confirmed the terms: Having pleaded guilty to assault in exchange for credit for time served, she will be subject to two years of electronic monitoring and house arrest, except for approved appointments and employment.

Circuit Court Judge James Daniel acknowledged that the case had drawn national attention but claimed his decision was “not based on any public opinion of any larger issue of public interest or social concern, but on the specific facts of the case.”

Alexander’s case has long sparked outrage about the unequal application of the law for both black Americans and women. Alexander was prosecuted by Angela Corey, who was also the prosecutor in the trial of George Zimmerman, who was acquitted in the February 2012 killing of Trayvon Martin. Corey did not appear at Tuesday’s hearing.

“We are thrilled that Marissa will finally be reunited with her children, her family, and her community,” said Sumayya Coleman, co-lead of the Free Marissa Now Mobilization Campaign. “Today’s hearing revealed that Alexander intends to attend school to become a paralegal and she is a wonderful mother to her children who urgently need her. Amazingly, the State continued their campaign of punishment by trying to add two more years of probation.” But the state didn’t get its way.

In November, Alexander pleaded guilty to three counts of aggravated assault with a weapon in exchange for credit for time served. A second trial had been planned for December, when Corey had planned to seek a 60-year sentence, triple the 20-year sentence Alexander got in her first trial.

The Free Marissa Now Mobilization Campaign and The Monument Quilt wrote on Facebook that “350 quilt squares containing stories from survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault will blanket the Duval County Courthouse lawn to let Jacksonville and the world know Marissa is NOT ALONE.” A fundraiser on Alexander’s behalf exceeded its goals, raising $58,297 from 1,122 backers on the site GoGetFunding.

“We have always believed that forcing Marissa to serve even one day in prison represents a profound and systemic attack on black women’s right to exist and all women’s right to self-defense,” the Free Marissa Now Mobilization Campaign said in a statement after Alexander’s plea deal.

The incident in question took place in 2010, nine days after Alexander, now 34, gave birth to a daughter. Alexander testified that her estranged husband, Rico Gray, had physically abused her several times and that on that day, he threatened to kill her. No one was injured, but a jury convicted her in about 12 minutes.

“young adult dystopian novels are so unrealistic lmao like they always have some random teenage girl rising up to inspire the world to make change.”

a hero emerges

And just like in the novels, grown men and women are going out of their way to destroy her. Support our hero.

And it’s not even like it doesn’t happen regularly.

Teenage girls are amazing.

Sometimes they’re not even teenagers

This isn’t a coincidence. Revolutions almost always happen when the population of a country is at its youngest and that’s a lot more true nowadays with social media.
