The Funeral and Burial of Lord Horatio Nelson

9 January 1806

The state funeral of Lord Horatio Nelson took place on this day in history, 9 January 1806. Nelson had gained a huge measure of fame in Britain by leading the navy to victory over the Franco-Spanish navy at Trafalgar. Nelson, however, was killed by a sniper’s bullet at the moment of victory. His body was transported back to England where his coffin was fashioned from the mast of ‘L’Orient,’ the French flagship at Nelson’s victory in the Battle of the Nile.

His body lay in state in the Painted Hall at Greenwich before it was eventually carried to St. Paul’s Cathedral at the head of an enormous procession. Stands were constructed inside St. Paul’s to accomodate the seating of thousands, and the dome was hung with the flags from captured French and Spanish vessels. After a four-hour service he was interred within a sarcophagus originally carved for Cardinal Wolsey. The sailors charged with folding the flag draping Nelson’s coffin and placing it in the grave instead tore it into fragments, with each taking a piece as a memento of their much beloved leader.

the christmas cupcake i just ate was slightly disappointing though, too much icing and not enough cupcake.

in other news its raining again today, but i walked around in it a lot. for class this morning we went to the somerset house gallery which was interesting, the photography exhibit we went to was really cool. and there was another exhibit of work by a fashion photographer tim walker which was just amazing. the work was so beautiful and weird at the same time.

then after class i walked down to st. pauls and ate lunch on the steps, and then went to the 12:30 eucharist service. the inside of st. pauls is so gorgeous, and it was nice to just sit and hear communion be said and receive it. there wasn’t any singing though because it was just a eucharist service which was too bad.

and then i headed over to the tate modern across millennium bridge and wandered for a little bit, then walked along the southbank and back to westminster to get the tube back to baker street having absolutely no motivation to walk all the way back to school in the rain. my umbrella that i got in venice for 2 euro finally gave up its life today, the legs just snapped, but it was cheap, and i have another. the city is looking very christmas-y and winter-y, maybe it’ll snow soon!
