Between 1985 and 2000, 1094 people in the UK were killed by terrorism.
Between 2000 and 2015, 90 were.
Since 2015 32 have, which suggests it might have gone us since 2015, but it’s still nowhere near as high as it was in the 80s and 90s”

When a country experiences many tragedies in a short space of time, it’s easy to forget that we as a generation have grown up in one of the most peaceful periods in the UK’s history.

This month, be it Manchester, Westminster, London Bridge or Finsbury Park - these events will not define the UK.

The actions of people define the UK. The communities we build - crossing race and religion and age and class - will define the UK. The UK is people and graft and belonging.

There is hope where there is kindness.

And there can be so much kindness in this country if we were to give it half a chance.

“The sun never sets on the British Empire” - John Wilson as Christopher North in Noctes Ambrosianae.
Whatever one might thing about this quote, the fact remains that not must in Britain but also all over the world, pragmatic patriotism is losing out to fantasy nationalism.

Mrs Arthur Kenworthy (ca. 1899), by J.W. Waterhouse

Waterhouse was not famous because of his portraits, but towards the end of his life he painted more and more of them.  It is a first sign of the general public losing interest in his works.  His later paintings were sold at lower prices, so Waterhouse relied on commissions for extra income.  The appointed portraits however needed to resemble the sitter, whereas Waterhouse preferred to show his ideals of female beauty on the canvas.

This is the portrait of his wife’s sister in law: Louise. She was married to Arthur Kenworthy. Whether it was painted as a gift or for a commission is not known.

In 1900, Esther and John William Waterhouse moved from the studio on Primrose Hill to 10, Hall Road in St. John’s Wood in the City of Westminster.  It was the former home of the sculptor and co-member of the Art Workers Guild: Harry Bates, who had died in 1899.
