When you haven’t read/seen/heard your artist friends’ works, but you see the latest Disney ASAP because it’s Disney,

a) ouch

b) you’re fueling the huge inequality wherein corporations make mega money and indie artists make little.

Please give word of mouth to those who actually need it!

Stuck at home because of Secret Reasons today, so I’m hauling a bunch of random finished things out from behind the couch to post pictures. Everything is for sale in the usual Make Me An Offer kind of way - as much as possible I’ll try so rough out how much time was probably spent making each thing and what it would cost if I was asking full price…but I’m not asking full price. As always, partial payments and trades of neato keen things are also totally valid for consideration.

First! A blue and white market bag/beach m/tote bag. I made this early in the pandemic when stores were not offering regular paper/plastic bags any more. It’s a two handle design for security and weight distribution. The net/mesh pattern makes it very stretchy.

The bottom is…I honestly don’t recall where I got it. I think it’s the center part of a video rage doily pattern, upsized. I like how it looks like hearts

It’s acrylic yarn for the sake of being totally washable.

I have no clue how much time I spent on this. Upward of five hours, probably, but five is a good math number so let’s use that to estimate time costs at various price points!

Federal minimum wage is $7.25/hr

7.25 x 5 = $36.25

Massachusetts minimum wage is $14.25

$14.25 x 5 = $71.25

And for the capper, an “expert wage” - I’ve been doing crochet for 36 years, so let’s just say a buck per year (don’t come at me, I know this is actually still a very low hourly expectation for a real expert, but we’re just mathing here)

$36.00 x 5 = $180.00

Do I want someone to pay me $180 for this bag? Fuck no! (I mean if you want to, feel free, but I’m only doing that part of the math to continue showing the various values of handmade fiber arts versus the price is mass manufactured fast fashion)

What I DO want is for this bag to go get used in the world and stop lurking behind my couch. Want it? Make me an offer!

A Dragonfly Scarf!

It is dragonfly both in design and in colorway - the yarn is a Red Heart Unforgettable in the dragonfly colorway. 100% acrylic, excellently soft for wearing against the neck (I can NOT with scratchy yarns, so this yarn was a great find).

The pattern is based off someone else’s design for…I think it was for a blanket, and it had the dragonfly motifs evenly spaced. I staggered them to somewhat mimic how dragonflies zigzag in their flight, added an eyelet edge to keep the whole scarf from rolling/help it lay flat.

It is not a long scarf, but it is long enough to bring the middle around and tuck the ends through or to wind all the way around once and tuck the ends inside the neckline of your jacket/sweater/hoodie to foil drafts.

How long did this take to make? Fuck if I know! Possibly five hours, maybe as many as seven, so mathing it out like above would be:

FedMin $36.25/$50.75

MAMin $71.25/$99.75

ExpWage $180/$252

Totally wild. Make me an offer that suits you instead, you deserve nice things and I need to vacuum behind my couch.

A Lost Souls market bag!

If you’ve been around me for any length of time you know what a dork I am for Maryetta Roy’s Lost Souls skull shawl pattern, so I made a bag using its motif.

It’s a single strap bag but the strap is thick for support. (I hate when bag straps dig in) it is an acrylic yarn, because washable is crucial when white fibers and foodstuffs are in close quarters.

The bag is smaller but, like the first one, has a mesh/net pattern to give maximal stretch.

The bottom of the bag is where our little skull friend is hiding!

This bag probably took in the 3-5 hour range, so

FM $21.75-$36.25

MM $42.75-$71.25

EW $108-$180

Damn, that’s a hell of a span. Anyway, want a cool mesh bag with a skull motif on it? Make me an offer!

A blue wrap!

I thiiiiink this was a pattern I made up, but I can’t be sure. If anyone recognizes it LMK. For me, it’s sort of a repeating pattern of offset leaves.

I feel like even the closeups do not do justice in conveying the softness.

It is a long boi, this wrap! For reference, your stylish Fiber Wizard Slash De Facto Model is 5’2”, and as seen seen below this DOES drape past the knee on both sides.

Strongly recommended for wrapping entirely around at least once, possibly while burrowing into the corner of the couch with a book and a cup of hot tea for Maximum Coze.

What fiber is it? Fuck if I know! It was yarn I got in a box from a friend when she destashed her dead mom’s house. Pretty sure it’s some flavor of acrylic though.

How many hours did it take? Your guess is almost as good as mine! Given the size I’m guessing it was comparable to the time I dump into a large Lost Souls shawl, so easily in the 15-20 hour range. With that for our math, we get

FM $108.75-$144.00

MM $213.75-$285

EW $540-$720

Looking at these time/money comparisons really does throw couture/OOAK high fashion piece pricing into a new light for me, damn.

Anyway, if you want to get a champagne item and you’re working with a beet nudge, that’s cool because my couch does not need a wrap against its back to be more cozy. Make me an offer!

Next verse, same as the first!

Same yarn anyway, and a variant on the design I did for that first market bag. Two handles, dark blue and white acrylic yarn. Net/mesh structure for good stretch, etc etc

Did a little scalloped edging around the opening of this one which is, frankly, kind of adorable.

Goddamn the bottom on this one is so pretty! Definitely adapted this one from some vintage doily pattern, and it is stunning. I should…not distract myself with project ideas in the middle of the post.

Star sack! Probably comparable to the first bag upthread in terms of time, so I’m not going to re-math it - y’all know how to scroll.

Want a star sack? Make me an offer!

Holy crap I was in Bag Mode two years ago…

…and holy crap this bag is huge

That is an entire 20” square couch pillow in there and it could easily stretch to accommodate more. *delicate koff*

I think that when I made this one I was trying to think about what various stuff I get from the store, and wanted one to better handle rigid items *ahem* like cereal boxes and whatnot. Therefore this bag is more of a rectangle/box structure on the bottom rather than round.

And now you must check out my the bottom.

It’s a really pretty bottom! With give to handle different shapes and sizes, but firm enough that it will stand up to mistreatment. And structure with a closed pattern so stuff doesn’t fall out.

If you need an accommodating sack with a nice bottom in your life, make me an offer!

Hey guess what? MORE BAGS!

I think these are the last two and they’re both funky so I’m doubling up.

The first one my brain has decided is the Watermelon Sack. Are watermelons purple inside? No they are not! Does my electric meat care about that? You know is doesn’t! Double handled stretchy goodness blah blah blah

My my but I do really find that scalloped edge charming. And even moreso with the color work of the two greens.

I think the bottom of this one was a vintage doily again, I don’t think I made it up.

I do remember these yarns, at least! Mostly. I’m pretty certain that both greens and the pink are all cotton yarns, albeit from different brands.

AHA! I knew this had to be in there somewhere! The pattern is Sakura Market Bag from K.A.M.E. Crochet if you’d rather just make it yourself.

I made this one first of all the market bags, and just with the yarn that was within reach, which was 80/20 alpaca silk from Valley Yarns. Is a sof’.

On the bottom of the bag you can see the design element that gave the bag its name - a Sakura, or cherry blossom shape.

I probably spent somewhere between 3-5 hours on each of these bags.

Do you like one? Make me an offer! Get them out of my house and make use of them in the world!

Eyyyyy a blue asymmetrical triangle shawl!

The light is not optimal on my living room right now *shakes fist at clouds* but it’s a sort of steel blue with a nice sheen. Probably acrylic; this was another inherited yarn.

I took all three of the next pictures with the point centered like so…

…so you can see what I’m talking about when I say this shaw is asymmetrical! (Pardon the blur; my many skills do not include graceful handling of the timer function on my phone camera)

No change was made to where the shawl lays on my back - but you can see one arm of it comes just to my hip, while the other hangs all the way to my shins!

This allows for some really fun shenanigans when you go to wrap or pin it!

I’d estimate this was probably 12-15 hours of work; the pattern isn’t complex, but the garment is sizeable. Do you like it? You should get it! Make me an offer! Don’t forget that the pricing upthread is merely a mathing exercise for appreciation of the time that goes into handmade items and is not at all meant to suggest actual price points!

This was meant to be yet another bag of Screamy Bois

But honestly? I think it actually will live it’s best life as a hanging planter!

Probably two hours of work, max.

A purple grey white gradient shawl! Asymmetrical with some really excellent texture, this is definitely dragon wing shawl but there are a lot of variants of pretty much the same pattern on Rav so I’m not sure who to credit for it

Fiber content: a soft and squishy mystery!

Time spent: 10-12 hours maybe?

We haven’t done math for a few posts, let’s do math:

FM: 72.50-87

MM: 142.5-171

EW: 360-432

Now you do the math: how much do you wanna pay for it so you can have a nice warm handmade neck hug?

Is it really a Blisstopian Thingmakery Destashing Extravaganza if there isn’t at leas one Lost Souls skulls shawl?

You’re in luck, today there are two. First,

This one is mostly a natural/bone white, with an added edging of charcoal grey

The entirety of the yarn is 80/20 alpaca silk weaving yarn (yes weaving yarn because no I am not always into using things for their specific intended purpose if it suits me to change it) from Valley Yarns. It is a laceweight yarn, and the resulting garment with this yarn thickness and fiber content is at once both light and airy but also very warm. I frequently will wear shawl made of this yarn rumpled around my neck like a scarf.

This was a 15-hour shawl, which maths out to

$112.50/$213.75/$540

But I don’t expect that. I expect, rather, that someone will totally love this and make me an offer I can’t refuse
