My Lit Final is Making My Own Comic Book
My literature class is called “The Graphic Novel” and the final has two options: 12-page term paper or a 5-page comic book that you create. I opted for the comic book, and the five-pages in a minimum (thank heavens).
I’ve been told stick figures are not acceptable, which rules out my entire repertoire of cartooning. My way around this is to make a comic book that features no people. I’m pursuing graphic medicine with my final project and writing/drawing my own synesthesias and aphantasia.
I had been stuck on the outlining phase and script writing and today abandoned all of that and just began drafting layouts. Remediation is exactly as hard as I thought it would be but it’s still going well.
Some things I have randomly decided to do with my comic book:
- Keep most panel backgrounds as pitch black to represent my aphantasia
- On pages where the panels are white, the gutters will be pitch black
- Panels will vary in size and shape, so they aren’t all boxes or rectangles
- Most drawings will be abstract
- Calligraphy is key since I have to represent graphemes and a lot of words
- Some pages will have no clear panelization or gutters
- It will be mixed media: Staedtler fineliners, colored pencils, markers, gel pens, sharpies, paint, graphite, pens, and highlighters will all be used
- I’ve decided to publish this if able and make a series out of it, next in the series will be my learning disabilities—because I think visually representing them makes them easier to grasp than verbally trying to explain them
That’s where I’m at right now. I’m still drafting the layout of page 1/5 but I’m feeling very confident.
Synesthesia something something, but Izzy Hands is dark gray, Ed is slate blue, Stede is peachy pink, Jim is oxblood, Oluwande is aqua, the Swede is lemon yellow, Buttons is taupe, Lucius is blood orange*, Black Pete is algae green, Frenchie is mallard green, Roach is wine purple, Wee John is yellow ochre
