Taj Mahal, Agra, India
Taj Mahal 1977
Inside the Taj Mahal, Shah Jahan had a throne commissioned for him. This throne, referred to as the Peacock throne, was made of gold, silver, diamonds, rubies, and other precious stones. The peacock throne was stolen by the Iranian conqueror Nader Shah in 1739, who then proceeded to lose the throne to the Kurds. The Kurds are said to have dismantled the throne and distributed the precious stones. To this day, only replicas of the Peacock throne remain in existence. (2)
Happy 80th birthday, Taj Mahal!
