She applied and was accepted to a graduate program at California State University. But the US government didn’t grant her a visa.

For Negin’s best friend — Shaghayegh Jahanbani — this was great news.

Shaghayegh never wanted to leave Iran, and she didn’t want Negin to leave either.

“Never,” Shaghayegh says laughing. “It was so hard for me when Negin was accepted at the university. I was so depressed. But I’m glad she didn’t get the visa.”

So, they started a custom furniture shop called Studio On together. It’s something that probably never would’ve happened if Negin’s visa had been accepted.

In a lot of ways, getting rejected was a blessing in disguise.

Life at Studio On was rough in the beginning, but business is so good lately that they recently had to stop taking orders just to keep up.

And now, Negin has a very different view of Iran.

“Before I start this work, I hate my city. The traffic, the pollution, everything was bad. But now, everything is good. It’s my city and I love it.”
