Solar System Quilt byEllen Harding Baker (1847-1886, USA), 1876, wool, silk & cotton; applique, braid, filling and embroidery, 225 x 269 cm, Smithsonian Institution, National Museum of American History.



Ellen Harding Baker was an astronomer and a teacher from Iowa. She made the quilt to assist her as a visual aid during her astronomy lectures, and it resembles astronomy illustration of the period. According to newspapers of the time it took her seven years to complete the quilt. 
Ellen had seven children before her death at the age of 38.
