Here’s the first installment in a new series I’m doing about getting to know the Americans with Disabilities Act! The first step in fighting for our rights is knowing them, so here’s to arming ourselves with knowledge!

Image description: The first is a pink image that says, “Getting to know the Americans with Disabilities Act (Ada) A simplified guide by PotsieSpoons” The second is a blue image that says “The ADA was passed in 1990 and amended in 2008. It was created to give those with disabilities legal recourse against discrimination. Before the ADA, disabled individuals had NO legal foothold to fight discrimination. Its purpose was to create clear, consistent, strong, and enforceable standards to prevent discrimination.” The third is a yellow image that says, “Fun fact! Two different Supreme Court cases muddled the intent of the ADA and caused lower courts (states) to RESTRICT protections that the ADA has originally put in place. In particular, the standards to qualify as a disabled person were made too high and difficult to reach.” Below this is a measuring stick with a hand pointing to the top and the words, “You must be this tall to be disabled!” An angry Potsie stands next to it, saying, “Seriously?!” The final is a purple image that says, “The ADA was meant to be BROAD to protect as many people as possible, so the amended act removed those strict definitions and high standards.” Below this is Potsie with the measuring stick—a hand is flicking it away while Potsie sticks her tongue out at it.
