#the starless sea
There are some books that make me ache for a place I can never go, or a person I can never be. This happened often when I was a child. I once longed to be a witch and study in the Ravenclaw tower. I still want to be a demigod, to fight alongside my Demeter siblings. As I have grown older, fewer books called to me in the same way. When I dropped out of college and was unsure about my career path, I dreamed about being a paper magician, to study only origami and hoe to bring it to life. Now there is nothing I desire so completely as to live in a harbor and sail the starless sea. I wish to live in a world where my neighbors love stories as much as me. I want to surround myself with books and cats and underground mysteries. I would walk through that door and never return.
The Starless Sea is a love letter to stories of all kind. Books, movies, and games are equally revered and enjoyed. Dorian and Zachary are the kind of couple I am most fond of; it is a story of longing thoughts and too much distance. Kat is an extroverted version of myself, or perhaps the sister I wish I had. The Starless Sea is beautiful in my favorite poetic way, and I wish I had a door. I would not live in a harbor, but I would always come back.
“Unreliable library lightbulb” is the most wonderful phrase.
My Top 12 Books Of 2020!! I think my favorites of the year are The Starless Sea and Devolution!
Remember when Bailey’s sister told him to grow up and he replied with
“That is precisely what I’m doing,” Bailey says. “I don’t care if you don’t understand that. Staying here won’t make me happy. It will make you happy because you are insipid and boring, and an insipid, boring life is enough for you. It’s not enough for me. It will never be enough for me. So I’m leaving.”
Hey gurl you dropped something MY JAW
But the world is strange and endings are not truly endings no matter how the stars might wish it so.

Everyone wants the stars. Everyone wishes to grasp that which exists out of reach. To hold the extraordinary in their hands and keep the remarkable in their pockets.
