Middle-earth March - Day 16

“Let this be the hour when we draw swords together. Fell deeds, awake. Now for wrath, now for ruin, and a red dawn. Forth Eorlingas!” Such an epic and strong scene at the Battle of Helm’s Deep! Looking at King Théoden as an old and battered man, weak and weary, the only strength coming form Saruman’s voice through him, you might never think that he would become the leader he was in the Hornburg uttering that memorable quote! Tolkien really knew how to surprise his readers! Today’s topic for Middle-earth March suggested by @tolkientribe is “Edoras, Horse Lords”.

wait, i just realised that aragorn was in minas tirith during ecthelion’s last ruling years (and was kind of vip, tbh). and you know who was there too, during that time?

frickin’ baby boromir.

so it seems obvious to me, that aragorn held little boromir in his arms at least once(and probably saw it when nannies changed his diapers).

Aragorn:it can’t be him. he is a baby

It’s quite possible that Aragorn held Boromir at both his infancy and his death.

This is fine!

Guys. Guys. Aragorn probably also met Theoden as a child, too. So… just fucking imagine that shit. Eowyn even says Aragorn went off to war with her grandfather…

I think Theoden would have been an adult when Aragorn was in Rohan as Thorongil.  I think he’s about the same age as Denethor and Denethor was also an adult during that time.

He’s a bit younger than both of them, so he’d have met Aragorn in his teens ! We know that Aragorn started traveling the earth as Thorongil around 2957 TA. Now that’s just suppositions on my part but I guess he did not go straight away to Rohan. If he arrived there in, say, 2960, Théoden (born in 2948) would have been 12. So Thorongil might very well have taught him some sword techniques (if Théoden was in Rohan at the time because he grew up in Gondor, in part).

Thanks for this addition!  I didn’t have the exact dates and was too lazy to look them up, haha.  Though I don’t think Aragorn had many interactions with Theoden even in the books - Theoden mainly interacted with Gandalf and Merry, from among the original Fellowship.  I don’t think he recognized Aragorn when he was healed by Gandalf, either, and neither did the guards who were very reluctant to let Gandalf, Aragorn, and Gimli in to see the king.  If they had met when Theoden was 12, Tolkien did a bad job of showing that.  And it’s not like Aragorn’s sojourn as Thorongil is unmentioned in the main story, he mentions to Eomer that he rode with the Riders of Rohan before Eomer was born.

I agree with you, based on their interactions it all seems unlikely (although it might explain why Aragorn is so reluctant to comply without question to orders in Meduseld – “I taught this boy how to hold his sword and now I am supposed to leave mine at his door ? I don’t think so” haha)
I do think Théoden might have spent a significant amount of time in Gondor still, and maybe not much, young as he was, fighting alongside the captains. We don’t know Aragorn’s exact rank either, maybe he was just a simple soldier.

Although there is the possibility that Théoden doesn’t reckognize Aragorn because how much he’s changed. He arrives in Rohan a dashing young captain in his late twenties, and returns as a seasoned ranger, with grey streaks of hair and a stern face. But I do think it unlikely that they would have spent much time together.

(However, Théoden might also be Like That. We don’t see him mourning his own son, after all)

(as for the guards I think they are simply too young ? Aragorn was there fifty to sixty years ago ! They would have been at best infants or toddlers, for the eldest of them)

Theoden does mourn his son in the movie, but I can’t remember if takes the time to do that in the book, or if he just immediately goes off to the Fords of Isen.  It’s true that he might have seen it at that point as being in the middle of an emergency, and not having time to do things like have funerals and catch up with old friends.  (Also, if I’m remembering right, I think in the movie Theodred was retrieved from the battlefield and died at Meduseld, which would make him easier to mourn, whereas I believe in the book he died in the battle and his body wasn’t retrieved, or at least not until later, I think all the dead Rohirrim from that battle were eventually buried at Helm’s Deep, weren’t they?)  He spends a lot of time talking to Merry later on, but that’s after Helm’s Deep and Aragorn parted ways with him only a little after Helm’s Deep and wasn’t around at that point.

You’re right that the guards would be too young.

Aragorn does give a very specific reason for not wanting to leave his sword, though, because it is Anduril and therefore probably the most important sword in Middle-Earth.  In fact, IIRC, he told the guards that he would happily leave his sword outside when visiting a simple peasant, if that was his request, let alone a king, except just not this particular sword.  Of course, if you go by movie canon, he doesn’t actually have Anduril at this point.
