three romanian authors to read with ur dracula daily
dracula is an orientalist text conceived at the height of british empire, grounded in distortions of a region that stoker never visited. sadly (and unsurprisingly) i found very few romanian authors who have been translated into english online, so here’s a meagre list of recs:
1. luminița cioabă
romanian roma author, famous in romania as the daughter of bulibasha (the king of the roma nation), she forged her own path as a writer of short stories in the oral roma tradition which portray in vivid detail the history of the roma people of romania
from humble rural romanian roots, he wrote under the oppressive ceausescu government. in a national ironic tradition he very famously said: "Just as I can’t give up smoking because I don’t smoke, I can’t give up writing because I have no talent.“ some of my favorite poems:
jewish romanian poet from bucovina. i recommend this beautiful essay by ilya kaminsky, who like celan was forced to flee eastern europe due to antisemitism, deconstructing various translators’ attempts to adapt celan’s texts and experience of the holocaust. these are all poems from a 1971 poetry collection
More wips of the illustrated Les Mis book I’m working on ;_; I plan for it to intertwine Valjean and Cosette’s backstories, ending with the two of them escaping the Thenardiers together <3
GREEN EGGS AND HAM Season 2 is out on Netflix! I’m PUMPED that everyone can finally see what we created… and I finally get to share some art! I was on this project for 2 years, starting with visual development and ending with background designs and layouts. It is a surreal experience seeing the final product, and seeing my fingerprints in the sets… I am immensely proud to have been a part of this show, and grateful to have learned from great talents @billperkinsart, Piero Piluso, @miles.thompson, Brad Raymond, Tyler Gentry, and Cody Cameron. I’ve a ton of custom brushes I make for myself (machinery, steampunk accents, art deco inspired magic sigils, bones and body horror, animal accents, scales, tails, feathers, bone textures, strange flora, horror, thorns and vines as well as stuff very very specific to the comic, like clothing trim, crests, uniform patches, etc. etc.)… all the way to more “normal” stuff like inkers, textured brushes, paints, flatters, etc.
since it’s so hard to find brushes for some things that aren’t just stamps, a lot of the brushes I make are continuous flow brushes as well as stamp versions.
They’re all made from custom art, not from photos or from stock. I wanted them to match my art style, so II made all of the brushes you see me use from absolute scratch. I may make some toonier variants and line art variants too, like the one dorsal view of the spine I made as a line art brush. I needed it for some decorative border work, so it got made… may as well make others like it, yea?
anywho! The point is, I’ll be putting these up in staggered packs on the patreon. I’ll start with a bone brush pack since that’s the one everyone’s most interested in. I’ll make a post about it when it goes up.
