And now, back again after 18 years, the new adventures of Galaxy Quest!

There’s a documentary on Amazon Prime I’ve yet to watch about how this movie helped revitalize the SciFi genre or something, and I can totally agree with that. It’s more slept on than Megamind or Clue or even Logan Lucky.

I think this sums up what it did pretty well

I had originally not wanted to see [Galaxy Quest] because I heard that it was making fun of Star Trek and then Jonathan Frakes rang me up and said “You must not miss this movie! See it on a Saturday night in a full theatre.” And I did and of course I found it was brilliant. Brilliant. No one laughed louder or longer in the cinema than I did, but the idea that the ship was saved and all of our heroes in that movie were saved simply by the fact that there were fans who did understand the scientific principles on which the ship worked was absolutely wonderful. And it was both funny and also touching in that it paid tribute to the dedication of these fans.
— Patrick Stewart

Reminded some of the people making the movies and shows who they were doing it for.

all right. so. this is a Harry Potter AU, in rambly and abbreviated form.

  • this is a version of events where, on the morning of November 1st, 1981, the police are called to a house in Surrey.
  • when they arrive, a large man with a red face and a moustache is waiting for them, brandishing a baby.
  • to be more accurate: he is brandishing a basket. the basket contains a baby.
  • he tells the police that his wife found the basket on their doorstep that morning. “Gave her the shock of her life,” he says, with a chuckle that does not seem the least bit sincere.
  • the police officers have a lot of questions about this, but the man does not have any useful answers. his wife, he tells them, is not in any shape to be interviewed. “she’s been poorly,” he says, “and we’ve got a baby of our own to worry about, keeping us up at all hours.”
  • the baby in the basket seems to be about a year old. he is cheerful, seems healthy aside from a cut on his forehead, with a crooked sticking plaster on it. he has startlingly green eyes.
  • there is no identifying information in the basket, except for a torn scrap of paper with ‘his name is Harry’ on it in a delicate hand.
  • there it nothing else to be done, it seems. the officers take baby Harry, and leave.
  • one of them comes back a few days later for a follow-up interview with the woman who found the baby. she seems a little fragile, and her own baby, in the next room, keeps up a constant shrieking tantrum the whole time the officer is there. “I’m sorry,” the woman says, with a brittle smile. “this has all been a bit much. I recently lost my sister, you see.”

So my grandmother and I went into town today to hit up the Walmart for corn meal. She warned me that a lot of brands mix a little wheat flour in, so we’d have to check the ingredients. Since Deacon doesn’t have any experience with corn meal, I figured I’d give him a little test and have him check the bags before we looked at the ingredients. He alerted to every bag on the shelf.

My grandmother thought this was the Best. Thing. Ever. She was so delighted to have him alert and then she’d look at the bag and say “yes! he’s right! check the next one!” (video is him checking the second to last one on the shelf). Because of this we gathered quite a crowd of spectators, one of which was a store employee, who ran a few aisles over and brought back a bag of gluten-free cornbread muffin mix for him to check. He said it was safe, at which point everyone watching collectively lost their shit. You would have thought we’d just won the Stanley cup. Strangers were hugging. It was unreal.

So afterward I held an impromptu Q&A session since none of them had ever seen a service dog before, and then a police officer who was watching told me all about the Malinois their force had, and even got choked up talking about the dog’s passing last year.

Since getting home, my grandmother has proudly told this story to every single person that called the house this afternoon (she’s a very popular lady), whether it be family members, quilting friends, or the preacher, one of which responded, delighted, that her daughter had already heard the story from her husband who was doing the grocery shopping that morning.

Small town life, ya’ll.

I would like a wheat and wheat-by-product service dog, plzthx. I would name him City Council.

games that i think would be great, but no one will ever make:

lord of the ring ‘farming’ sims

like, the ring has been destroyed, peace has been achieved

sadly, the whole war has left ithilien, the shire, moria, minas morgul, the mirkwood, osgiliath, and tons of other places all across middle earth a dreadful mess

which is the perfect setting for having a random unimportant character go ‘fuck it, now that all the big warriors and heroes have done their job, i’m gonna do mine and plant some fucking flowers here’

and like. rebuild all of the things, and repair stuff, and plant flowers, and just. make all those places the story shows only in ruins be proper, real communities again

like: the player character’s parent is this great amazing warrior, and you just… never got into that, and now the whole war is over, and everyone is all ‘let’s celebrate our heroes’, and gets very… the whole thing fantasy does these days, where war against evil is the main focus, instead of actually living good lives?

and it’s like that scene in the beginning of a lot of farming sims, where the player character is sitting in an office and despairing, but instead it’s some sort of feast where everyone is bragging about how many orcs they killed or something, and also trying to recruit for the army, and it’s really terrible

and the player character just goes ‘nope, i do not want anything to do with this, i’m leaving, this was not what we fought for’

and gets, like, a shovel and a spade and a broom and maybe a pickaxe, and goes to find the nearest ruins left by the war, and starts tidying up

i understand that a lot of the tone of the books stems from some sort of magic is leaving, and the world is moving onwards, and that is just fate, because it’s now the age of the humans, and you know what?

fuck this. that just sounds ridiculous and some weird missing the good old days bullshit. of course it’ll never be the same, but that doesn’t mean it’ll never be good again, if we’re all working towards it together

You are a hobbit. Your name is Junior. it’s the anniversary of your dad’s return from the big hike he went on, the time when all the Big Folk come out to have a party, when your Uncle Frodo’s face looks even more like glass than usual. Sometimes he’s cheered up when the littles ask him for stories, and he tells them of places he’s seen, ruins and vast empty plains where only, occasionally, kingsfoil grows.

“Well why’s that then?” you ask.

“I beg your pardon?” says Uncle Frodo.

“Why hasn’t anyone gone to perk it up a bit?” you say. You’ve been learning a bit from Dad, who can make anythinggrow. “Why didn’t Dad, when you were passing through?”

“We were on a bit of a schedule,” says Uncle Frodo, and you’re not quite sure what the expression on his face is, but at least it’s there.

“All right, then why didn’t you stop when you were coming back?” you demand. “You had plenty of time then. You didn’t knowwhat was going on in the Shire, and you could have at least - at least -” Your mind is too full of all the things it takes to get a good garden growing. “I thought you said Uncle Merry and Uncle Pippin wanted to help Fangorn find his treewife, I thought they said they were going to do something.”

“You know,” says Uncle Frodo, and now there is definitely a bit of a smile in the corner of his mouth, “You make a good point. Someone really ought to go and follow through on those promises.”

The next morning, there’s a pony and cart waiting for you in front of Bag End. You think that’s a little excessive, until you see the cart is half full of tools and half full of seeds, and you know none of that was Uncle Frodo’s gift.

“Be careful out there,” says Dad, giving you a hug. “Your uncle left you his old sword under the driver’s seat, but…”

“A good whack with a shovel will do for most things,” you finish. “I know, Dad.”

And you pick up the reins and drive east.

I would play the HELL out of a LOTR based game in which you are (player name) Gamgee, setting out to replant the world one flower or fruit tree at a time.

I’m a goldsmith and hand engraver and got told we have a client who wants a particular themed signet ring with a bonkers high budget and that I should come up with some designs for it. In describing what he said he wanted the manager said ‘he said it was his special interest’ and immediately I was like ‘I need to meet him. I can research and design this for months and months or I can listen to him for 30 minutes and take notes, which do you want?’

that is also the custom of naming a drawing. “The darkness is pain and hatred, but the flowers show beauty and peace and love. Each has a feeling and a feeling that resides within you.”

“the galaxy is full of wonders and mysteries, it is full of a planet that has life, who has little knowledge, it doesn’t know anything about the galaxy. darkness is everywhere, but the light will never go away, the light of hope will always be by your side.”

In the manga, Rei is often shown wearing a necklace. In fact, during the earlier arcs, she’s never seen without it.

image

image

image
image

The Materials Collection even makes special mention of it.

image

It also mentions that, after transforming into Sailor Mars, the pendant moves to her waist and becomes a tool that helps her generate fire.

image
image
image

To me, this seems to imply that Rei’s pendant has a special significance to her. So I did a little digging through the manga, and lo and behold:

image

That’s right; Rei’s deceased mother, Risa (name revealed through PGSM, btw), owned the exact same necklace! See?

image

So my idea is that, before she died, Risa passed her necklace onto Rei and Rei’s treasured it ever since. She treasures it so much that it actually becomes a part of her fuku and helps her with her powers; in a way, it’s almost like Risa herself is supporting and helping her daughter even though she died years ago.
