Welcome to our first 2018 editorial cartoon!

Anyone else catch the Golden Globes this last weekend? There’s lot to be said about #timesup and all of the actresses who attended the awards show wearing black, but undoubtedly, Oprah’s acceptance speech (after receiving the Golden Globe Cecile B. DeMille Award) is the highlight that everyone is talking about.

Opinions about Oprah’s speech immediately cropped up throughout the Internet. While there was widespread appreciation and support, there was also plenty of know-nothings complaining about Oprah getting political during an awards show, and leftists questioning whether Oprah was the right person to deliver such a potent, important, and timely message.

Maybe the presentation was not entirely perfect in messaging and inclusive of all the issues that are important in the social justice realm. But it is a wildly successful moment of cultural intervention. Oprah’s reach is unfathomable for many of us. She has influence that many on the left wish we had. She is a cultural icon of our time, and to have her use her platform to further the message of the #metoo and #TimesUp movement is incredibly important.

It must have also been a gargantuan undertaking for the activists who organized all the celebrities (including Oprah) to be on message and to make a statement in a high profile awards show. It made the message more culturally visible, and while many may feel like the moment could be co-opted by celebrities who aren’t close to the grassroots efforts, the fact that the conversation has now proceeded to be amplified by the likes of Oprah is a big opportunity.

Whether you agree or disagree that Oprah was the correct messenger, one thing is for sure: the platform for the conversation around equity for women in our society has just gotten larger, more prominent, and louder. And we think that this is a good thing in the grand scheme of our goals as cultural workers.

Kudos and congratulations to the amazing and unmatched Oprah!

Guess what shithole country we live in? That’s right the good okd U.S. of A.

L’Daijohnique Lee was charged with at leadt one felony after Dallas police filed criminal mischief charges for allegedly damaging her attacker’s pickup truck AFTER she was beaten up on.

Dallas PD have lost their minds. This woman could have ended up in the morgue the way she was attacked but this is what you turn around and do? Because you were FORCED TO UPGRADE your charges on her attacker? I want to see if this woman gets the same energy out if these hashtag movements like they got for everyone else especially black men.

The tag #FightTogetherWithShiori has since become synonymous with #MeToo and #TimesUp on Japanese Twitter.

#FightTogetherWithShiori

This is the first woman in Japan to speak out in a high profile sexual assault case against a very famous journalist who has written books about Prime Minister Abe. The first of the #MeToo movement surfacing in japan was based on this case that came out May 2017 as the first brave voice to speak up.

The #MeToo movement in America has greatly helped give women the courage globally to speak up against sexual assault and violence

Now, #standtogetherwithshiori has become the Japanese #metoo and #timesup synonymous rally cry.

Friends of Japan and global women’s rights, I implore you to add #FightTogetherWithShiori to your tweet about women’s rights so you can show your support for Japanese women’s liberation
