A few months ago, I was asked by Hazel Hayes to contribute some graphics for her upcoming zombie short film. She pitched the idea of a dual brand. One for the “fake” film set which the movie takes place, and one for the film’s branding.
The first poster was made to be a pretty vulgar poster. Which was all about having it look as macho as possible. Tom had to have the muscliest arms on show, and Emma was to be wearing some horrendously skimpy clothing. I referenced the comic art of Scott Pilgrim for the look, and made it as bright as possible. It was made to be a poster which felt very out of place being a poster for a zombie film, which would add to the feeling that the fictional film shoot was falling apart at the seams.
The branding for the film was designed to have all the tropes of horror movie posters. The floating heads, the texture, the colour pallet, everything. I think the seriousness of the poster mixed with the slightly daft title works nicely. This would work in direct contrast to the bright garish poster used in the film. This branding would be used in the opening, the end credits (screenshots coming in a later blog post), and all the merchandise.
From acrobatic meet and greet poses, to sumo wrestling suits and spotting our favourite YouTubers- we’ve only just recovered from the best Summer in The City ever! Bursting at the seams with over 10,000 of us from the online community meeting IRL, grab a cup of tea and some biscuits as we celebrate some of our favourite#SitC2016moments!
Kicking off with Creator & Industry Day, creative sparks were flying as up and coming vloggers met with industry experts to inspire the future of online careers. Who knows which next big thing will be attending 2017 as a special guest…
Breaking out the streamers for the event’s 8th birthday, more than 150 YouTubers got the party started, including Jenna Marbles, Ricky Dillon, PJ Liguori, TomSka, Jack & Dean, SacconeJolys, Ben Phillips, Dodie Clark and Jon Cozart. Fortunately, we refrained from cake before taking on the funfair challenge.
Aside from the buzz of ballot results, a lot of creators were caught out in the wild! From Noodlerella handing out hugs at her own stand, to Jedward’s never ending selfie line, it’s awesome to hear about all of your adventures!
Maybe you were down the front with us for some amazing (Dodie Clark), rocking (Emma Blackery), and erm… unexpected live performances (Philip Green covering Meghan Trainor in Lip Sync Karaoke anyone?). Or did you check out some of our shiny new panels? It was great to hear some behind the scenes insights on everything from Body Positivity, Travel, Ethnicity & Diversity, to the Pokémon YouTubers Panel.
You guys have excellent taste and crowned Nathan Zed Vlogger of the Year at the first ever Summer in The City Awards! It was such a highlight to see your picks take to the stage and feel the love. The legendary TomSka scooped the Community Spirit Award, Jack & Dean took Series of the Year, and Book of the Year winners Dan & Phil even zoomed a message over all the way from Australia.
