“I had to make a choice about the music that I wanted to compose, not knowing anyone would embrace it, but just to stay alive and wake up in the morning and respect myself, even if I had to play piano bar for the rest of my life. The great lesson of Y Kant Tori Read was that I began to see what the music industry was made up of, for the first time, clearly. You only find that out once you’ve been kind of accepted into it and then had a bomb. You don’t know what it’s about unless you’ve had a bomb. Trust me. And you begin to see who’s there and who’s not and one person was there, two people maybe. Very few people were there afterwards, and so that kind of gave me the courage to make the choice, ‘Would I rather have these false relationships in my life, or have real relationships and respect what I do?’ even if that means that I don’t have success, commercially, but I have success as a musician because I respect what I do and once I made that choice, my life changed.”
