This “no more music posts” stuff is nonsense. Tumblr has always been a clusterfuck, but it’s gotten exponentially worse since Yahoo took over. If they decide to delete my tumblr account, I’m just going back to Ye Olde Livejournal. That was fucking garbage, too, but at least I didn’t feel like I was being censored to fucking death.

As the staff post about ad-free tumblr continues to get thousands of notes telling staff to fuck off in the tags, I wanna remind you that this website’s days are numbered. Tumblr is still unprofitable and by some modern-day miracle none of its acquiring companies pulled the plug on this money pit. But it will happen if it continues its trajectory.
Whether you like it or not, Tumblr needs to make money off you somehow in order to stay up. It either serves ads or asks for money to use it. This has been a paradigm on the web longer than many of you have been alive. It’s Tumblr’s job to make money right now because it’s well past its grace period of being a black hole for cash. This has actually always been Tumblr’s job, since it is a corporation, but that’s capitalism for ya.
If you want Tumblr to be here for free and you want to continue to use it, you do yourself a disservice by opposing any changes Tumblr makes in order to pay for its costs. When this site finally goes belly-up then you’re gonna be Tumblr-less until whatever startup takes its place and the cycle repeats itself.
If you think it should just ask for donations Wikipedia-style, remember that if and when that happens, there will be users repeating the same tired bullshit about giving Tumblr any money.
Tumblr being notoriously hostile to monetization is only cool and funny when it’s about attempts to sell this freakazoid userbase’s attention to third parties. If the way they finally keep the site afloat turns out to be the freakazoid userbase itself exchanging goods ($) for services (Tunglr Dot Hell), honestly we will have WON the monetization fight.
I’ve seen a couple people asking why other social media doesn’t require this. If you look into what data the apps collect for various social media, tumblr has some of the lowest and least personal data collection. Other social media sites run off of selling the data that they collect and serving targeted ads. Tumblr… well, we all know what the ads are like.
If we want to keep a place that doesn’t literally tail us all over the ‘net, like Facebook and anything owned by Google, then we do at some point need to make sure that that place stays alive.

Block does seem to temporarily deter them, though.
Blocking anons blocks further anonymous asks from that IP address. In other words, whoever’s harassing you is changing their own IP address to do it whenever you block them. Which is, honestly, just plain pathetic.
i think it is very depressing that like every aesthetic people try to emulate are of people doing things but they themselves are incapable of being somebody that does things… the mall goth 2005 aesthetic revived in 2022 but nobody goes to the mall to be annoying and weird and nobody lets themselves be cringe… the cottagecore aesthetic but nobody knows how to raise gardens or live self sufficiently … the dark academia aesthetic but nobody actually reads books…. In light of the recent PostPlus nonsense tumblr is trying to pull, here’s a reminder that monetization of fanfiction can lead you to legal trouble. On Ao3 it’s against the TOS to even mention any money-sending site at all because of the conditonal protection they offer.
Putting your entire fanfiction blog behind a paywall is like pointing a neon sign saying “please sue me”. I bring this up specifically because tumblr mentioned fanfiction in the post that they made and that is going to leave a lot of people misinformed.
Remember: Do NOT paywall your fanworks.
And rest assured, my blog will never be pay-to-read, even if this weren’t a fanfiction blog. I think the whole thing is ridiculous.
How do we form a Blogging Site Of Our Own? Or maybe a Forum Of Our Own?
Oh god, I want that. Like, the best things on the internet, or the parts of it I use personally, are Ao3 and Wikipedia. They don’t steal my private data, they don’t harass their users, no, moreso, they’re for their users. For us. They survive on donations, and I’m very happy to donate to them whenever I can afford to, because they’re a service and they are so much better than the for profit alternatives. It’s crowd funding, isn’t it? We’re crowdfunding a community library and encyclopedia already. I’d be happy to donate to a Blogging Site of Our Own as well. Heck, I’d donate to Tumblr if that meant everyone can have fun here and we could get them to cut out some of their nonsense and focus on the good and fun things for the community using it.
Quick, I need a couple billions to buy Tumblr and gift it to the hellsite population. Where do I get a couple billions. Alternatively, we’ll need a couple million people with a handful of change each…
