tumblr is a website that wasn’t designed to produce any specific kind of content, and in the end it mostly boils down to shitposts that mean absolutely nothing, and american political discorse where all sorts of liberals and communists duke out about which way is the best to oppose the political right
Its funny how so many people left tumblr because of the porn ban and how it was censorship or whatever and now 3 years later its like literally the only social media you can say the word “kill” on without fear of getting permanently banned
yeah but like, the ban still displaced a lot of sexworkers and nsfw artists. like dont get me wrong a lot of us with sfw blogs are still here, but the ban did absolutely hurt sexworkers and heralded a falling domino effect against sex work on the internet in general. you can laugh about the perceived ineffectiveness of the tumblr horny ban now, but every week me and countless other people who do pornography have to wait with baited breath if the freshly introduced puritanical bill of the week is going to make twitter shit its pants and do a sitewide ban of all suggestive content
god THANK YOU everyime i see a post thats some variation of “haha Porn Ban? more like This Site Is Still Fine right guys?” i wanna throw a fit. it kicked off a ton of people who used this site to good effect to sell nsfw stuff regardless of its nature, never mind the drove of people that got chased off due to the misfiring algorithm. like not evej just porn but i see so much LESS art on my timeline cause so many people just bailed because it was no longer safe to post stuff here, yeah the funny men and shit posters stayed but at the cost of making this site all the more hostile to sexworkers which includes artists. on top of that this was still THE BEST mainstream social site for artists, and Tumblr tanked that to look good for investors and banks. Twitter, Instagram, TicTok ect all suck ASS for artists for various reasons not to mention that they all aside from Twitter (god willing) just as hostile to NSFW stuff. this place can sill be fun, but it used to be great, and i seeing people flag wave for censorship because they can still see a funny shitpost now and then
Tumblr is your post apocalyptic Mad Max desert while Twitter, Facebook and Instagram are your enclosed dome cities where your brain is constantly being scanned for thought crimes.
Both are dystopia nightmares but you have different flavours.

I lost a lot of mutuals I had considered genuine friends. It reminded me of LiveJournal Strikethrough, of the purging of Fanfiction Net. All the ways the cult of fandom purity and antishipper culture represents white supremacy and eugenics at its core, attacking sex work and art as if that would solve something.
Dipping into the Sherlock Holmes fandom on Tumblr as someone who didn’t particularly get into BBC Sherlock (I think I saw the first couple of series when they aired) is so funny because occasionally I’ll stumble into BBC Sherlock content, and I often have absolutely no idea what is canon and what is fanon. +

I know that all of these are easily googleable but I’m enjoying my ignorance and I want to make some guesses.
I am very sure that Sherlock and John do not actually end up co-parenting a child called Rosie, but I see the name used SO MUCH that I feel like it must have some basis. Perhaps she’s John’s daughter with Mary, and only appears as a baby? Or she could be transplanted from the RDJ movies? If ‘Rosie’ doesn’t appear at all in the show then I’m in awe (and a bit scared) of the Sherlock fan hive-mind for collectively agreeing on her existence.
I think Gladstone must be from the Robert Downey/Jude Law movies. I’m a bit sad about that because I was entirely prepared to believe that Dorothy L Sayers invented him in the 1930s or something. It’s such a good name for Watson’s mentioned-once-and-forgotten-about bull pup.
Moriarty and Moran are definitely not canonically lovers, but I think perhaps queer-coded Moriarty is flirty with Moran in the two sentences they exchange and everyone lost their minds over it in 2011.
I think Mummy is talked about but never seen. In fact she’s probably dead? Perhaps there is a huge tragic backstory surrounding her.
The story of the Sherlock version of Moran is actually kind of interesting, speaking of the Sherlock fan hive-mind collectively agreeing on someone’s existence. It began with Moriarty being introduced in the final episode of a season, which meant that the fandom had a lot of free time before the next episode to speculate about what the show’s version of Moran would be like when he showed up. By the time the next season started airing, fandom had collectively agreed on a set of parameters and hundreds if not thousands of words of fic had been written about him. And, fandom being fandom, a lot of it was shipping the criminal mastermind with his loyal lieutenant.
All of this before there’d been a single second of Moran in the actual series.
In fact, what makes it really interesting is that in the end, Moran never showed up in the series at all.

Somehow it feels like tumblr is accidentally the perfect social media site, because none of the things that I love about it make sense as features the way we use them. Tags are for organization, but we also use them to have our little thoughts in without raising them to the status of main text. The queue makes sense for keeping a steady stream of Content going if you’re trying to Build a Social Media Presence, but really we use it just to bank posts we want to reblog without flooding everyone else’s dash. You can’t see how many followers anyone else has, which I just have to assume was an oversight because it flies in the face of everything about social media, and it’s great because you can never quantify anyone’s Influence so everyone’s essentially on the same level. There’s no way they planned for giffing to become such a Thing, because before tumblr, gifs were practically relics of the early internet days, a novelty, usually kind of tacky, and now they’ve become a sort of folk art form. You can reblog an entire conversation, not just a single post, so there’s a whole genre of humor that exists here that can’t really propagate like that on any other social platform. Honestly this website is just a little freak of nature that cannot possibly have been intended, and that’s why no media company has been able to figure out what to do with it, because it makes no sense within the larger social media ecosystem. I love it.
if you’re a new tumblr user from tiktok or IG or something and only like posts and dont reblog them yeah people will think you’re a bot and block you but you will also make this website actively worse. they want “algorithmic” users like you, served recommended posts through likes, not people who just follow each other and respond to the direct chronological feed. there is a reason this website is still better than the rest, even with all its problems, do not ruin this
ok i need to make this clearer: if you do not reblog posts and only like them you are contributing to this site actively getting worse and becoming like all the apps you hate. keep likes to things you just wanna keep off your blog. reblog everything else. ESPECIALLY fanart, which always needs a reblog.
